wellbeing in austria.
Alpine Spas Simply by arriving in the glorious Austrian Alps you are already getting healthier. he altitude and fresh clean air instantly revive spirits and staying in an Alpine spa, where the accent is on relaxation and restoration, is an ideal way to give your body and mind a treat. Therapies at Alpine spas often incorporate products made from local ingredients – herbs and plants from mountain pastures – making the treatments unique and unusual.
T
Nature dominates, whether you are surrounded by mountains or gently rolling landscapes, from the pure untreated drinking water from lakes, mountain springs or your hotel room, to the uplifting landscapes and the silence, often broken only by birdsong. Hotels tend to be built to a traditional design, using plenty of local Austrian pine, which has been found to lift moods and increase sociability. A medical study, the Austrian Moderate Altitude Study 2000, discovered that after an activity-based three-week stay in the mountains, participants had lower blood pressure, had lost weight and had increased oxygen levels in their blood. Being surrounded by such natural beauty cannot fail to lift the spirits, and the chance to be pampered in one of the state-of-the-art spas only adds to the sense of wellbeing. Well-trained therapists and clinicians can tailor specific treatments to individual needs, mixing a soothing massage with a traditional Austrian treatment. Therapies such as the renowned hay bath, which soothes away aches and pains, or a Tyrolean stone oil treatment, which stimulates blood flow, are unique experiences. New product ranges, produced exclusively in the Alps, add to the natural feel. Alpienne is a brand that has taken traditional Austrian remedies and ingredients and created a 21st century range of creams and oils. Chamomile and arnica, calendula and hypericum are all natural ingredients, which have excellent skincare properties.
www.austria.info/spa
To get the best from an Alpine spa, you need to combine the outside with the inside. Beyond the hotel walls lie myriad ways to complement spa treatments: a hike along marked trails, a cycle ride across pastures and through villages, cantering across meadows on horseback. Taking exercise at altitude brings added health benefits and there are few sights more spiritually uplifting than lush green slopes against clear sapphire skies. Food is an integral part of an Alpine spa break, much of it locally sourced, and some produced by the hotels themselves, from home-grown herbs and vegetables, to home-baked cakes, breads and pastries. And that’s what makes a visit to an Austrian spa so unique; there is no need to spend days hiking in the hills and mountains or undergoing strenuous exercise. Simply spending a few days at one of these luxurious hotels will do you the world of good.
Soaring peaks, lush pastures, clear blue skies – Austria’s natural beauty is a tonic in itself. Combine that with a luxurious bedroom, a restaurant serving the freshest local produce, comfortable lounges to relax in and a spa offering a wide range of natural, organic treatments, and you have the recipe for an indulgently relaxing spa break.

wellbeing in austria.
Thermal Spas It almost sounds too good to be true. o simply lay back in warm fragrant water, close your eyes and drift off – knowing that every moment in the water is benefiting both your mind and body. But this is what Austria’s unique thermal spas offer – the chance to truly relax and let mineral-rich waters gently soothe away the stresses and strains of 21st century life.
T
Thermal spas date back to Roman times, when soldiers marching across Europe discovered that bathing in thermal waters soothed aching limbs and could even cure wounds. Over the following centuries, thermal springs were discovered throughout south-eastern Austria, and by the early 19th century they had become world famous. Ruling families from throughout Europe visited the thermal spas, from the Habsburgs of Austria to our own Edward VII. The rich salt and mineral content of these waters is thought to help with aching joints, back and skin problems and even more serious conditions, such as rheumatism and arthritis. Many of the Austrian thermal spas have several different pools, some with jets and fountains to target specific areas of the body. Saunas, at different temperatures and with different fragrances, are also an essential part of the Thermal Spa experience. A stay in a thermal spa is as much about restoring the mind as the body. Soaking in warm water under a sparkling blue sky, surrounding by rolling hills or dramatic peaks, is a fantastic way to de-stress the mind and help clear away the strains of everyday life. Most famous of Austria’s thermal spas is the Rogner Bad Blumau, where ground-breaking architecture in primary colours and dream-like shapes forms a stunning backdrop to a linked network of pools. A similarly stunning outlook

is to be found at the Quellenhotel & Spa, where a natural lake has been shaped to incorporate a thermal infinity pool with wonderful views. The thermal springs at the Thermal Spa Resort Ronacher (p. 28-29) were first discovered in 1033 AD, and the oldest part of the hotel dates back to the fourteenth century, when a church was built over the thermal spring, with wooden baths installed to take advantage of the waters. And at Reiter’s Supreme Hotel, the newly opened Yin Yang spa has its own thermal spring that bubbles up from almost 900 metres below; hot, soothing waters that are thought to increase the defence mechanisms of the human body. When bad is good... remember, when you’re in Austria, all villages with the name ‘Bad’ are in fact the perfect places to relax, as they all have sources of thermal water.
Why go to a thermal spa ? Because there is no better feeling in the world than gently slipping into warm, fragranced waters, beneath a clear blue sky, and feeling the rich mineral content slowly work to restore mental and physical well-being. Austria’s thermal spas are some of the best in the world, with stunning architecture, award-winning restaurants and highly qualified practitioners combining to create unforgettable resorts.

wellbeing in austria.
Medical Spas The beautiful mountain scenery and clean, crisp air have created a rich spa heritage in Austria. ong before the current vogue for facials and pampering massages, spa resorts existed to offer remedies and therapies for a wide range of medical ailments – and that tradition continues today. From the beginning of the 20th century, spas have been part of Austria’s medical culture; comfortable rather than clinical, where doctors, consultants, and physiotherapists prepare a programme of treatments that can aid recovery or simply improve well-being.
L
All medical spas will have doctors and clinicians residing in-house, and will tailor each programme to an individual’s needs. Although treatment packages can be booked in advance, a doctor will always see you at the beginning of your stay, mid-way through for a check-up and again at the end. The accent is always on personal care, to ensure that the treatments are achieving their goals. Austria’s medical spas offer a rich variety of treatments and therapies. Some offer the latest, high-tech cosmetic surgery, others offer detox programmes or preventative therapies. All, however, have one thing in common: the traditionally warm Austrian welcome, with an accent on hospitality and comfort to ensure that your stay is spiritually – as well as physically – beneficial. Some medical spas are renowned for truly unique treatments. At the AlpenMedHotel Lamm, there is the Cryotherapy treatment, which consists of three chambers that are kept at different temperatures. One is -10 ˚C, the second -60 ˚C and the third -110 ˚C. Patients can use the chambers for up to three minutes twice a day, to help with skin disorders, arthritis and even stress reduction. You can be secure in the knowledge that all clinicians overseeing these types of treatments will have qualified as a medical doctor before training in alternative methods.

At the Alpenresort Schwarz (p. 8-9), there is a range of packages and treatments for weight loss and detoxing. These include coaching with a personal trainer, individual yoga and Qi-Gong sessions and a complete health check with the on-site doctor. In addition, the spa also offers aesthetic plastic surgery, with detailed consultations with experienced professionals. Many of Austria’s Finest Spa Hotels & Resorts have on-site doctors, allowing you to combine medical treatments with pampering therapies. The Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol (p. 22-23), Thermal Spa Resort Ronacher (p. 28-29), Quellenhotel & Spa (p. 32-33), Reiter’s Supreme Hotel (p. 34-35) and Rogner Bad Blumau (p. 36-37) all offer fitness and health checks, and personal consultations. All staff combine the highest level of professionalism with a warm, friendly style, to help you feel better, faster.
The mountains have always been a place of rejuvenation and recovery, and Austria’s medical spas are continuing that tradition in the 21st century. Combining the warm welcome and impeccable Austrian service with experienced medical professionals means the chance to recuperate, regenerate or simply relax in the most beautiful surroundings imaginable.
