Blas Grade: 5th Subject: Math Length: 4 Days A Analyze Learners - General characteristics • 15 students • Ages: 10yrs-11yrs • 9 females/6 males • 2 ESL students • Ethnicities: Chamorros, Philipinos, Chuukese, Korean, Chinese • Religions: Catholics, Mormans, and Christians - Specific entry competencies • Students have had prior lessons on money, how much the different coins are worth, and how much it would take to make 1 dollar. • They are knowledgeable in adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing and are just beginning to learn about adding/subtracting/multiplying numbers with decimals. • They understand the basics of a computer, including the mouse, keyboard, monitor, and printer. They have used Microsoft Word to type out stories they have written. - Learning styles • Audio/ Visual • Kinesthetic S State Objectives - Students will count money and document the data. - Students will create a spreadsheet using Microsoft excel to calculate the budget they have to spend at a “pretend school supply shop”. - Students, as a group, will prioritize which items will be purchased when given a shopping list which exceeds their budget. - Students will determine which items they will purchase. - Students will input the new data, the items with the prices, into the digital spreadsheet. - Students will determine how much money they have left over after purchasing the items. - Students will compile all handouts, print-out, and notes. - Students will compile a project folder to be turned in at the end of the lesson. S Select instructional methods, media, and materials - Method • Individual learning • Group learning

-

Media • Computer, Microsoft excel Materials • Coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters), paper, pen/pencil, school items with tagged prices e.g. pencil for 25 cents.

U Utilize media and materials - Preview materials • Check computers to ensure that they are all working and have Microsoft excel. • Count coins that are going to be used for data collection and ensure that there is enough for the entire class. -

-

-

Prepare materials • Ensure that handouts are ready for the first day of the activity (handout attached) Prepare environment • Ensure the room is clear of any unnecessary materials or distractions. • Reserve the computer lab for days the students will be working on their spreadsheets. Prepare learners • Explain to the students what they will be doing and what is expected of them. • Explain the rules of the computer lab. Provide the learning experience •

R Require learner participation - Practice • Review adding, subtracting, and multiplying numbers with decimals. • Review money and the different values of coins. - Do • Pass out handouts for data collection. • Have each student collect a handful of assorted coins. • Each student will separate coins on their desks e.g. all the pennies together, nickels together, and so on. • They will count the quantity of each group of coins and complete the handout given using multiplication and addition. E.g. multiply 5 and .25 to get the total dollar amount of the quarters. Add the dollar amounts of the different coins to get the total $ amount of all the coins combined. Below is an example of a completed chart on the handout.

Coin $ Value Quant ity Total $ Amou nt Penny $0.01 3 $0.03 Nickel $0.05 4 $0.20 Dimes $0.10 7 $0.70 Quarte rs $0.25 5 $1.25 Total $ Amou nt of all Coins $2.18

After completing the individual assignment, students will be assigned to groups of three; each group will have at least one boy and the two ESL students will be placed with excelling students. Using the computers, the students will then create a spreadsheet to

determine how much money the whole group has together by using the auto sum tool in an excel spreadsheet. • The spreadsheet should include group members names, their individual data which will includes the total $ amount of each coin group, the names of the coins, and total amount of money the group has combined. They will be using the auto sum button to get the total amount of all their coins. • Students will then save and print their spreadsheet. • They will be given a list of items they would need to buy at the “pretend” supply shop. The list will exceed their budget. • They will prioritize and decide, as a group, which items they need and could afford. • They will calculate how much money they have left over after purchasing the items by inputting the new data, the items purchased and the prices, into their saved digital spreadsheet. • They need to design their spreadsheet to look professional and understandable. • Students will save and print their final spreadsheet. • Students will compile all their work, including notes, print-outs, and handouts, and put it into a project folder which is to be submitted to the teacher at the end of the lesson. - feedback: tests, quizzes, demonstrations, presentations • Students will report their finding to the class. They will discuss the following:  How much money their group had.  Which items they needed to buy on their list and the total amount.  Which items they bought and why.  How much money they had left over.
