1-Defination of Microbiology: The word Microbiology consist of three words Micro, means very small anything so small that it must be viewed with Microscope, bio means living things and logy means study. Therefore, Microbiology is the study of very small living organisms called Microorganisms or Microscopes. Microorganisms are said to be ubiquitous, meaning they are virtually everywhere. The various categories of Microorganisms include Viruses, bacteria, Archaeans, certain Algae, protozoa, and certain fungai. 2-why do you think this course is important in biotechnology? We already knew that Biotechnology is defined as “any technique that uses living Organisms (or parts of microorganisms) to make or modify, to improve plants or animals, or to develop Microorganisms for specific uses”. Microbes are used in a variety of industries, including the production of certain Foods and Beverages, Food additives, Amino Acid s, Enzymes, Chemicals, Vitamins (such as Vitamin B12 and C) , vaccines, and Antibiotics as well as in the mining of ores such as Copper and uranium. Therefore biotechnology depends on Microorganisms in the production of Foods such as Acidophilus Milk, Bread, Butter, Cocoa, Coffee, and Cottage Cheese, cultured Buttermilk, Fish sauces, green Olives, Kimchi (from cabbage) and Meat products (e-g country- cured hams, sausage and salami). Microbial enzymes used biotechnology industries include amylase, cellulose, collagenase, lactase, lipase, pectinase, and proteases. Finally Microorganisms live on us and in us; they are necessary in many biotechnology industries; they provide most f the oxygen in our provide; they are used in to clean up toxic wastes s; they are used in genetic engineering and gene therapy; and many of them cause disease.
