Stadhuis Almere C.G. Dam
Almere Stad
“Its street layout, a grid of rectangular plots, served as a springboard for the design of the town hall: two five storeywings at right angles and one diagonal wing. The front and rear facades are contrasting. Those facing the town have a distinghuised character deriving from the classical tripartition of basement, marble-clad middle section, and cornice with round indentations. The rear facade is less flat, and displays a great degree of openness.” - Dam & Partners

Polygoon Primary School Herman Hertzberger Hollywoodlaan 109
“16 classrooms are not grouped around a central hall, but situated alongside the long shaped, street like space, overcovered by the arch shaped roof. Additional educational spaces are combined as a strip in the middle of this ‘street’. This zone of smaller, more or less enclosed rooms is interrupted by place like open spaces that connect the two corridors. On top of this central zone there is a long balcony, open for different use.” - Herman Hertzberger
Health Center A.E. & H. van Eyck
Greta Garboplantsoen 1
“Aldo van Eyck was commissioned to design a health center for the Filmwijk neighbourhood as part of the BOUW RAI II. From outside the building looks hermetic, a fortress even, judging by the phalanx of ‘periscopes’ poking up like battlements along the North facade. Internally the design proves to be another illustration of Van Eyck’s ‘house as a small city’ theme. The entrances are located at places where the outer walls sweep inward.” - Guide to Contemporary Architecture in the Netherlands

De Bombardon Primary School
Herman Hertzberger Simon van Collemstraat
“Besides 14 formal classrooms, this school for children with learning and educational problems has a relatively large number of additional spaces, including around 6 rooms for remedial teaching, spaces for expressive movement and one for cookery lessons and a gym. The main theme was the absence of corridors, with all rooms opening on to an uninterrupted hallway stretching like an interior main street over the entire length of the building.” - Herman Hertzberger

“De Fantasie is a collection of splendid houses on the southwest shore of the Weerwater. De Fantasie has developed into a beautiful and tranquil neighborhood. Because of the involvement of the people in this area it has the feel of a holiday resort. The intention was to build homes which were to be demolished after five years. However, due to the project’s success, the houses are still standing.” - Holland.com
De Realiteit Teun Koolhaas Noorderplassen
“De Realiteit lies in a fairly remote area, which has resulted in a surprising ambience. The seventeen houses differ in the materials used and the construction, but mainly in shape. ‘A bird is flying underneath our house’ is suspended five meters above the ground in a steel frame. The house itself is a small, two-storied wooden cube. The surface area of the house is small in proportion to the steel frame.” - Holland.com

“Muziekwijk is the first quarter in Almere which has been fully developed by the city itself. Muziekwijk is known for the houses in the former exhibition area of the BOUW RAI in 1998. As there were no existing buildings, there were virtually no conditions the new designs had to comply with. The various architects, including Herman Hertzberger, Teun Koolhaas, Peter Loerakker and Mecanoo, created a wide range of houses. A recent edition is De Muzen. Atelier Pro designed this 360-meter-long building.” - Holland.com

“Appropriately enough, this is the home to one of the company’s twelve research and technology groups around the world. Essentially, these people work on new and better ways of making energy and coming up with new things to do with it. The building is on the north side of the IJ river, commonly referred to as the “other” side by locals. From its position on the edge of Amsterdam’s harbor it has a commanding view of the city. Its most striking feature is on the roof -- a concrete mass of geometric squares and circles turned at a 45-degree angle to the rest of the building.” - Wayne Lorentz

“The brief required an explicit visual relationship with the IJ-river and with the historic center of Amsterdam on the opposite riverbank. The urbanistic plan proposes an open plan of parallel slabs of different height and form, and a triangular lawn. The western part is of three rows of urban villas (towers with four dwellings on each level) and two slabs, with dwellings accessible by a street in the air or central stairs. The eastern part is dominated by parallel slabs of different hight” - Office for Metropolitan Architecture

Conceived of as public space and using the existing height difference along the station square of 1,25 meters a system of slopes has been created on which the bicycles can be stored. Beursplein, damrak 267 AMSTERDAM
“The Beurs van Berlage is a building on the Damrak, in the center of Amsterdam. It was designed as a commodity exchange by architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage and constructed between 1896 and 1903. It influenced many modernist architects, in particular functionalists and the Amsterdam School. It is now used as a conference venue. The building is constructed of red brick, with an iron and glass roof and stone piers, lintels and corbels. Its entrance is under a large clock tower, while inside lie three large multistory halls formerly used as trading floors, with offices and communal facilities grouped around them.” - Flickr.com

“The Scheepvaarthuis was built as a joint office for six Amsterdam shipping companies. It was to be a modern and functional office building. The structure is a piece de resistance of the Amsterdam School and one of the main examples of this architectural style. Characteristics of the Amsterdam School are the profuse masonry along the chimneys, ridge beams and frames and the design of the corners.” - Holland.com

Mother’s House A. van Eyck
“Hubertus House, nicknamed the ‘Mother House’, was established in the 19th century to support ‘fallen women’. From the 1970s the house has offered shelter and protection to single parents and children. The staircase is a central feature of Hubertus House and clearly visible from the street. The supporting construction is a concrete construction of columns and floors. The non-retaining interior walls are made of glass. The staircases, terraces and passages make this a fascinating and intimate building. Intimacy is important in this house because of the circumstances of its occupants.” - Essential Architecture.com

“During a period of forty years an empty socle stood on this beautiful spot. With my project I refer to what there was before: a classical building that served as a café just as the Zuiderterras now. ‘The Zuiderterras’ name is derived from the promenade with the same name along the ‘Schelde’ river quays. Transparency of the building was the starting point. This expresses itself in the choice of the materials: metal combined with a lot of glass. The interior was further completed with warm wood and transparent linen curtains. The alternation of mirrors and large windows creates an atmosphere of infinite space and connection with the river.” - Mi Modern Architecture

While most other architects flirted with the new style, Horta found it gave the best expression to his ideas. The interiors become of great importance as centres of light, which permeates through the filigree domes and skylights—usually in the centre of the building.” - Great Buildings Online

In these houses, often only a few metres wide, the emphasis was on the decorative façades.” - Belgium Comic Strip

“Although this gigantic edifice does not really belong to the Sablon, it nevertheless dominates the area. It was built between 1860 and 1880 by Joseph Poulaert in eclectic style. It is believed to be the biggest building constructed in the 19th century in the world. The palace of justice is situated on top of a hill, which was called “gallows hill” in the Middle Ages. The dimensions of the palace are awesome: it is 105 m high and covers a total surface of 24.000 square meters. It still functions as the supreme court of law for Belgium.” - Travel Info

BRUSSELS
“It was constructed on Brussel’s Avenue de Tervueren by the Wiener Werkstätte or Viennese Workshop. Although the marble clad facade is radically simplified and looks forward to Modernism, it contains commissioned works by Gustav Klimt in the dining room, four copper figures at the top by sculptor Franz Metzner, and other craftwork inside and outside the building. This integration of architects, artists, and artisans makes it an example of Gesamtkunstwerk, one of the defining characteristics of Jugendstil.” - wikipedia
CECA House
W. van der Meeren
“Initiated by the ECSC (European Coal and Steel Community), this experimental house is typical of post-War research into very economical housing and reflects the ECSC’s high involvement in this issue. Component standardisation, prefabrication and rationalisation of plans based on Le Corbusier’s Modulor combined to significantly cut labour costs, notably on site. The structure is based on 4 steel frames infilled with brick, weighing 4 tonnes in all. The light façades are also in metal, with frames in folded sheet metal for all glazed sections and opaque metal plate panels with incorporated insulation.” - steelconstruct.com

“One of the original ideas for Expo ‘58 was to build an upside-down version of the Eiffel tower; however, Waterkeyn felt that an atomic structure would be more symbolic of the era. The monument was originally planned to remain standing only six months. However, it soon became a symbol not only of the World’s Fair, but of modern architecture and Brussels. The monument stayed the same for almost 50 years.” - wikipedia

“De Resident stitches the low-rise of the old town center to the high rises of the new business district centered on The Hague Central Station. A new tram route from the station to the city hall compensates for the built over tracks. Once the area had gained a new diagonal axis and horseshoe-shaped central public space, a team of name architects from home and abroad directed by Krier and Sjoerd Soeters was enlisted to design the panoply of high profile buildings.” - Guide to Contemporary Architecture in the Netherlands
City Hall and Library Richard Meier Spuiplein
“The City Hall and Central Library is easily spotted due to its enormous size and unmistakable Richard Meier palette - white, and only white. Another distinguishable trait of the building is the large open atrium space. The building complex houses the council chamber, marriage hall, public library, municipal offices, leased offices, and some shops on the street level. The atrium space has a glass roof that was carefully designed to allow sunlight in but at the same time to control the temperature of the space.” - galinsky.com

“Leuven is a university town located 30km to the east of Brussels. The first references to the town may go back to the 9th century, but it was not until the 12th century that Leuven started to flourish as an important trading center for cloth. In 1425 the University of Leuven was founded. Leuven has a rich heritage and various historical buildings from different centuries can be admired. Its finely sculpted Town Hall and Saint Peter’s church with the famous ‘Last Supper’ by Thierry Bouts, are fine examples of flamboyant Gothic architecture at its best. The Baroque style can be found in St Michael’s church, in the interior of the St John the Baptist’s church, and in the unrivalled stucco of the Park Abbey. “ - Econ

“The small pavilion-like laboratory building for the NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) Facility is located on the Uithof Campus of Utrecht University. The twofloor column free laboratory houses eight spectrometers (high-frequency magnets). This influenced decisively the spatial layout of the building, because the radiate force fields these magnets produce may not be disturbed. The building consists of a single concrete surface, which continues from floor plane into the wall and ceiling. The flipping-over surfaces are constructive and are thus not traversed by a secondary support structure of columns.” - UNStudio
