Crown Heights Anti-Gun Violence Program Outreach Worker Supervisor Job Description

The Crown Heights Community Mediation Center, a project of the Center for Court Innovation, is seeking Outreach Worker Supervisor for a new anti-gun violence program. The Center for Court Innovation, founded as a public/private partnership with the Fund for the City of New York, is a nonprofit think tank that helps aid victims, reduce crime and improve public confidence Operating out of a storefront since the summer of 1998, the Mediation Center provides training, youth programs and resource links to community residents. Its mission is to strengthen the community and prevent future conflicts by enhancing access to justice, promoting public safety, and encouraging communication and understanding. The soon to be named program will be a replication of the Chicago Project for Violence Prevention’s evidence-based CeaseFire: The Campaign to Stop the Shooting program, a cutting edge gun violence prevention model that aims to reduce and prevent shootings through the use of public health strategies. The Crown Heights Anti-Gun Violence program is a coordinated strategy to address local shootings. A skilled Outreach Supervisor is key to the success of this initiative. The Outreach Worker Supervisor will work individually and as a team to prevent neighborhood shootings and killings.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: • Plan the day-to-day and week-to-week activities with and for the outreach staff. • Plan and hold daily meetings to review current shootings and assess what additional interventions are needed. • Connect with additional resources from neighboring communities (e.g., gang mediation assistance) to get needed support, when necessary. • Supervise staff of outreach workers, including daily communication with each worker • Conduct outreach to the community to build strong relationships with youth, residents, businesses, and community groups. • Coordinate interview panels to hire outreach staff. • Attend weekly supervision meetings • Increase staff visibility when shootings/killings take place (e.g., developing networks with other outreach program workers to coordinate an inclusive and immediate strategic response). • Research causes of shootings/killings to assist in mediating situations and preventing retaliation between individuals and groups (e.g., working with the community, outreach programs and local law enforcement to gain information that may be helpful in preventing additional killings). • Identify and diffuse “hot spots” for shootings and violence (e.g., conducting eyeball surveys with residents and community based organizations to identify areas frequented by potential offenders). • Attend and participate in meetings with law enforcement, community outreach workers, prosecution, probation, and agencies providing opportunities, to discuss recent situations and coordinate efforts collectively to stop the killing. • Facilitate violence prevention and life skills workshops in local schools, parks, and community based organizations.



Document detailed client case notes and overall coordination of all staff reports.

Qualifications • • • • •

BS in a human services field or equivalent experience. Extensive experience working with at-risk youth and gang members. No pending criminal cases or prior convictions for sexual assault, child abuse or domestic violence. Excellent communication skills. Experience and/or training in crisis intervention and staff supervision.
