Respectable comrades – students, monks, people of Burma, friends of Burma, friends those who are in solidarity with oppressed people in Burma and those who are fighting for the freedom and democracy in Burma: With miseries and agonies continue unabated and with leaders of democracy movement constantly threatened, Burma seriously needs collective and coordinated action from international community. Dire situation calls for dire action. The action must come from the UN Security Council. To urge the UN Security Council to take urgent, concrete and concerted action for the freedom of Burma and immediate release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, we will stage Long March and Hunger Strike campaign that will start on May 27, 2009. We would like to announce that our longmarch and hunger strike movement will start on May 27, 2009 to urge the UN Security Council to take a concrete action for the freedom of Burma and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Our campaign entails three parts and details are as follow: Part I: Long March The march of 900-mile journey from Golden Peace-Land Pagoda, Fort Wayne, Indiana to the United Nations head quarter, New York City, New York, starting on May 27 at 9:09 a.m. (anniversary of 1990 election in which the NLD won by landslide, 82% of the votes.) We will send open letter to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Mon on the day our long march begins. While marching, we will make the truth about Burma known to the public by distributing newsletters and pamphlets and collect signatures.
We will send the second open letter to UN general secretary Ban Ki Mon on our opening day of hunger strike. We will send the open letters to the five permanent member countries of the UN Security Council.
Part II: Demonstration From September 8 to 17 during the UN General Assembly, we will sit in front of the UN, distributing pamphlets, displaying posters and portraying life in Burma in the form of drama.
Part III: Hunger Strike On September 18, 2009, 22nd anniversary of blood-shed coup that gave rise to the current military regime, we will launch our 9-day hunger strike that will conclude on September 27. To seamlessly accomplish our campaign, three working committees – Finance, News and Media, and Organizing – have been formed. Their respective members are as follow: Finance Committee 1.
