ANIMALS OF THE RAINFOREST The Giant Panda

Habitat of the Panda We can find this animal on the mountains of the provinces of Sichun, Gansu and Shanxi, Southwest China and Bamboo forests of the mountainous region of China, at elevations from 1500 to 3000 meters.

What does it eat? It feeds exclusively on leaves and tender shoots of bamboo.

Habits Pandas are usually solitary animals. They are more active at dawn. They spend most of their time sleeping in bamboo forests. Their territory is marked with a combination of odors from the anal gland, urine and and its claws. Pandas avoid conflicts by not using shared areas of the territory during the same period. As a tropical animal, pandas do not hibernate.

Enemy A natural enemy of the giant panda is Man and the red dog, a wild dog. A traditional legend says the giant panda covers the eyes with his feet when he is being hunted. He is like a ball, rolling on the slopes.

Number one panda’s enemy.

Is it an endangered animal? The giant panda is an endangered animal, because people are destroying its habitats.

Does the giant panda need the rain forest to live? The giant panda needs the rain forest, because it is there he finds his food and habitat.
