OBJECTIVES:• •

Optimization of alkali To print given cotton fabrics with the help of Reactive paste having different alkali concentration and then testing to observe from which best results are observed.

APPARATUS: Beaker, stirrer CHEMICALS REQUIRED FOR STOCK PASTE: Sodium alginate [3-12 %] Urea Ludigol Water

30-120g/l 100-200g/l 10g/l 1000 ml

PROCEDURE: • • • • • •

First of all, about 1liter of water was taken in a beaker, followed by the addition of sodium alginate 3% of the weight of paste to be prepared. This mixture was then stirred vigorously using a high speed stirrer. The viscosity of paste was then measured with the help of viscometer. The amount of Sodium alginate was optimized to obtain a viscosity level of 13000 centipoises. Urea was added and again viscosity was measured. The increase or decrease in viscosity was noted.

OBSERVATIONS: Viscosity of paste before addition of urea = 13500 centipoise Viscosity of paste after addition of urea = 12500 centipoise

PREPARATION OF PRINT PASTE

APPARATUS: Beaker, stirrer CHEMICALS REQUIRED FOR PRINT PASTE: Stock paste (made as above) Alkali [3-4.5%] Reactive dye [4%]

30-45 g/l 40 g/l

PROCEDURE: • • •

The prepared stock paste was divided into 4 equal parts i.e. 250ml each. Ludigol (mild oxidizing agent) was then added. Each paste was identified as: 1. 2. 3. 4.

contains alkali 3% contains alkali 3.5% contains alkali 4% contains alkali 4.5%

Printing procedure was same and done one by one by each paste

PRINTING OF COTTON FABRIC MACHINE USED: • •

Flat bed printing machine Stenter

PROCEDURE: • • • • • •

The fabric sample was printed using the flat bed machine. The fabric was then dried at 110oC for 1 min through stenter. It was then cured at 170oC for 2 min. The fabric sample was then washed. The procedure was repeated for each paste one by one from 1 to 4. Testing was carried out on the fabrics and results were compared to find out, which concentration of alkali gave the best results.
