Ghardaïa Ghardaïa is actually a cluster of five towns in the river valley of the Oued M'Zab - Ghardaïa, Melika, Beni Isguen, Bou Noura and El-Ateuf. It is home to a conservative Muslim sect called the Mozabites, which broke from mainstream Islam some 900 years ago. The area is famous for its carpets and the daily souq in the old town. It's worth visiting Beni Isguen, the religious fulcrum of the valley, 3km (1.9mi) from central Ghardaïa. Foreigners are not allowed to enter without a guide, and not at all on Fridays; it's also forbidden to wear shorts, take photos or smoke.

El-Oued Domed City

Tagged the 'Town of a Thousand Domes', ElOued is the major town of the Souf region in the Grand Erg Oriental. Most of the buildings have domes, built to alleviate the summer heat. Martyrs' Monument

This concrete memorial to the struggle for Algerian independence, isn't really very attractive when you look at it. But it is very striking - you can’t miss its imposing bulk from wherever you are in Algiers. The monument was opened in 1982, on the 20th anniversary of independence, and it looks over an area containing the best views out over the city.

Arts & Crafts Traditional crafts include knotted and woven carpets made from wool or goat hair; basket-weaving; pottery, silver jewellery; intricate embroidery; and brassware.

Carpetmaking. Wool is obtained from local sheep, goats to make the carpets for which the Maghreb has become famous. The brightlycoloured town carpets from Kairouan, Rabat and Setif are similar to those found in Anatolia. They come in different sizes, prayer mats, bath carpets, saddle rugs, footrugs. Each region has its own costume and weaving styles. Sheet copperwork is another specialty and was passed down from the Ottomans. Attractive decorative lamps with multicolor glasses can be found all over the country. Traditional Berber silverwork is extremely popular and some pieces are made with semi-precious stones and coral. Craftsmen make brooches and pendants and do enameling. Many tourists like to buy items made of coral from the reefs of the country's coasts . Among the favorite objects are touareg swords, long and ornately decorated, in leather, copper and often animal horn.
