Understanding Emotional Intelligence Using Ancient and Modern Philosophies Abstract We as humans are emotional beings. We get carried away by emotions many a times. The problem here is that when we are unable to control our emotions in a particular academic or professional environment, it can prove to be detrimental. This is when we feel the need for Emotional Intelligence. It refers to being constantly aware of our emotions and not letting the circumstances take the better of us. This paper will try to delve into the various explanations of Emotional Intelligence and will shed light on its various aspects. Since human emotions are very subjective, the author will try his best to stay away from any generalisation. The paper would take help from the Indian value systems, ancient stories, legends and philosophies to show their connection to modern philosophies of management dealing with the subject matter. Using such comparison, the different definitions and components of Emotional Intelligence will be explained. Also, the paper will deal with the question whether Emotional Intelligence is an inborn quality or an acquired skill. Further, the importance of it will be explained in professional and academic environments to put one’s best front forward. This will be achieved with the help of examples and illustrations as needed.
