755th Railway Operating Battalion ARL EDWARD LANDMESSER ARL EDWARD LANDMESSER, 73 of Macedonia, RR 2, Towanda went home to be with the Lord Wednesday morning March 26, 1997 at the Sayre House, Sayre, Pa. Born Jan. 28, 1924 in Powell, Pa. he was a son of the late Clarence Lewis and Ella Mae Northup Landmesser. He attended the Powell School for eight years and was a graduate of Towanda High School class of 1941. He then attended NYA School in Monroeton and was a locomotive mechanic apprentice for the Lehigh Valley Railroad in Sayre. He entered the U.S. Army on March 8, 1943 and was honorably discharged from Co. A, 755th Railway Operating Battalion on Dec. 13, 1945. He received a good conduct medal, European-African, Middle-Eastern Campaign Medal with four bronze stars and the WWII Victory Medal. Carl attained the rank of technician 5th grade and served in combat in Northern France, the Rhine and Central Europe and Ardennes. Carl entered the employ of Sylvania Electric Products in Towanda in May 1946 and worked as a supervisor and later as senior technician in the T.V. Phosphors Dept. until his retirement in Jan. 1986. He was a member of the French Asylum United Methodist Church for 47 years and very active in church affairs. Carl was an excellent and competent carpenter and made many improvements in their home in Macedonia where they resided for 47 years. He loved his family, home, the outdoors, camping, hiking, gardening and traveling. On Oct. 10, 1948 he married the former Helen Benjamin at the French Asylum Methodist Church. Carl was a former member of the American Chemical Society, Asylum Grange and the National Campers and Hikers Assoc. Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Helen Landmesser at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Cheryl R. Landmesser of North Rome, Lynne and Carol Landmesser of Rome; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Gregory Friedman of Sayre; four grandchildren, Jared Lynne Landmesser, Kristin Nicole Landmesser, Cortney Mrie Landmesser, Jennie Friedman, step-grandchildren, Heidi and Mike Wooster, Nicole Priedman; two brothers and sistersin-law, Robert and Jean Landmesser of Powell, John Eldon and Bernice Landmesser of Monroeton RR 1; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence L. Landmesser on Sept. 20, 1955, his mother, Ella Mae Landmesser on Feb. 23, 1995 and a brother, Clarence L. “Buddy” Landmesser in April of 1926. The funeral service will be held Saturday, March 29, 1997 at 2 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, Pa. with Pastor Michele Sommerville of the French Asylum United Methodist Church officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in the French Asylum Cemetery, French Asylum, Pa. with Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 according full military honors. The family suggests that memorials may be directed to the Wysox Volunteer Fire Co., Box 2, Wysox, Pa. or to the French Asylum Methodist Church in care of Jack Kilmer, RR 4, Box 202, Towanda, Pa. or to the charity or organization of one’s own choice in Mr. Landmesser’s memory. –Towanda Daily Review
