First Word First Baptist Church Naples July 4 & 5, 2009

A Firm Reliance on Divine Providence We welcome Dr. Richard Land to our pulpit this weekend. One of our nation’s most insightful and influential Christian leaders, he will challenge us to spiritual revival and moral and political renewal. There is no better time for us to be challenged and informed than the weekend when we remember our beginnings as a nation. “Independence Day” is more than just a movie about victory over an alien invasion, but a declaration of our dependence on God and a reminder that our fragile freedoms must not only be remembered but protected and reaffirmed. When the Second Continental Congress met in 1775, the representatives were a deliberative body and was the chief organ of government for a new union of states and made the traumatic decision to declare independence from England and its king. They did not have the power to tax, a policy which crippled the development of an army during the following year. With little more than firm faith in God and a commitment to be a “free people,” they declared war and signed “the Charter of our nation.” We must be reminded that our new nation was based soundly on not only “the laws of nature” but also “nature’s God.” Our forefathers were saying by implication that we owed obedience to this law and God. They were “appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world” for aid in being “free and independent states.” They did so in “this declaration with a firm reliance on the protection of divine providence.” The Constitution indicates how we run our country, but the Declaration established the foundation. Though the Constitution doesn’t specifically mention God, it does not have to because the Declaration is the first and highest document, indicating that we are a nation under God’s laws. As we watch Iranians protest in the streets and cry out for more representation and freedom, we must pray for them and trust the Sovereign Lord who works in all places and all times. We pray that they will not know Allah or “an unknown god” (Acts 17:23) but realize that freedom is the passion in every heart. God has “made from one man every nation of mankind” and “determined their appointed times and their boundaries…that they would seek God” and “repent,” turning to Jesus who was “raised from the dead” (Acts 17:26-31). The true “Supreme Leader is not Ayatollah Ali Khamenei but the Lord Jesus Christ. If we are not careful and prayerful, Americans will trade in our Republic and freedoms to follow cultic figures and an Iranian style of government which is “voter’s limited, carefully vetted choices” (NewsWeek, June 29, 2009), which is not freedom but restrictions. May we pray George Washington’s prayer from a farewell letter on June 8, 1783: “Almighty God, we make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy protection… and most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy…we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”

Janet’s Summer Reading Club

Ladies, once again this year, join us for a precious time of book discussion with our Senior Pastor’s wife, Janet Wicker. This year promises to be even more exciting and rewarding than last year. All books are available in our bookstore. Light refreshments will be served at all meetings.

July 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Commons “A Voice in the Wind” by Francine Rivers

This novel is set in the first-century, during the great trials and persecutions of the early church. The heroine is a young slave girl named Hadassah who is torn by her love for a Roman aristocrat, but clings to her faith in the living God for deliverance from the forces of a decadent Rome. The lessons learned are as applicable today as they were then!

August 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Commons “Five Conversations You Must Have With Your Daughter” by Vicki Courtney

This brand-new book has been selected to help Moms who are desperately trying to talk with their daughters about sensitive issues in a Godly way. It will cause you to focus on helping your daughters understand that they are more than what people see on the outside and they do not need to grow up so fast. You will learn how to dare your daughter to be virtuous. Janet is happy to announce that Karen Head will be joining her for the last session of our Reading Club on August 25. We have added the book “Your Boy: Raising a Godly Son in an Ungodly World” also by Vicki Courtney. This book will do for moms of boys what the other book “Five Conversations You Must Have With Your Daughter” will accomplish for moms of girls. Because both their needs are unique, we will discuss these books in separate groups that night. As you parent and guide a young boy to become a young godly man, this additional book will encourage you, challenge you, and help your son avoid the pitfalls of cultural pressures. See the Lighthouse Bookstore to purchase this book, and add it to your summer reading schedule.

Important Announcements Worshipful Atmosphere

It is our desire that Jesus be the focus in our worship services. Therefore, in consideration of others desiring to worship with limited distraction, we ask each person to do the following: - Please turn your cell phone off or set to vibrate. - Please remain in the worship center (except in the case of emergency) once you have entered to worship. - Should your child become unsettled or noisy during the worship service, please take your little one to the Fellowship Hallway or preschool ministry area in the Education Building where you can comfortably watch the service on a television monitor. Thank you for helping us maintain a worshipful atmosphere for everyone!

New Members/New Believers Class

Our New Members/New Believers Class will begin on July 12 and will meet on Sundays at 11:00 a.m. in Room DC113. Hey boys and girls! Get ready for another exciting worship service at KidzTown Worship. This week, we will be continuing our exciting series, “Super Sports Spectacular,” where we learn how to be part of God’s team. In today’s service, we will see the dangers of being prideful, and we will also hear from one of our soldiers fresh from Iraq, as he tells how he saw God working in the midst of war. KidzTown is open to all children in 1st through 5th grades and is located in DC120 every Saturday at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
