July 11 & 12, 2009

Church Recreation Night This Sunday, July 12 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Family Life Center & Fellowship Recreation Building Join your church family for a fun night of recreation. We will be grilling hot dogs and hamburgers, both gyms will be open for basketball and volleyball, and we will be playing frisbee golf, horseshoes, and much more. Please plan on joining us even if it is raining... it won’t dampen our fun!

God’s Man at the Academy Few Christians are aware of how many strong believers are embedded in strategic military positions. Some of our most difficult assignments are carried out by those who love the Lord Jesus just as we do. When Janet and I were on vacation in Colorado, we decided to attend Sunday worship at the nearby Air Force Academy. The beautiful Chapel is one of the most striking architectural designs in America. We expected to be thrilled at the mixed sound of pipe organ and cadets singing praise. However, when we arrived we discovered that the contemporary protestant worship service had been cancelled for the summer. Even the incredibly competent military complex can fail to update their answering machine! Of course, we were disappointed. A young man met us and explained the situation. We discovered that he was the new protestant chaplain. It was his first time to be at a worship service at the Academy – the Catholic mass which had just ended. With shaved head and terrific physique, he looked more like a member of Special Ops than a chaplain. We joyfully discovered that Captain Steve Barfield, his wife, and four daughters had recently been assigned to the Academy. A graduate of the seminary where Janet and I received our degrees and a Southern Baptist, he had been a youth pastor in some of our churches and is from Florida. Wow! We instantly connected. I learned that he had a special calling to leave the comfort, conveniences, and larger salary of a local church to pursue what he felt was a call to evangelism and discipleship in the military. Steve had to go through rigorous training and a combat assignment with Special Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan before he could come to beautiful Colorado. He told me privately, “I feel that God wants me to pour my life into these students in disciple-making.” I responded, “Yes, these men and women will all be leaders some day and have a huge impact on many.” We had our own worship service with prayer, commissioning Capt. Barfield to his new ministry, just as the Lord “Set apart Paul and Barnabas to the work for which He had called them” (Acts 13:2). The friends with us then gave him a love offering for lunch and dinner. I was also able to connect him with an old friend in Colorado Springs who could assist their family in the new location. I am thrilled to be in a Baptist Convention which supports 3,000 chaplains in the military through the North American Mission Board. Pray for Steve and particularly the others who are in combat. I am grateful that we have the Good News of eternal life regardless of physical death. As we prepare for the Great Commission Connection, we are grateful to support the Barfields and others like them.

Guest Reception

There is a guest reception in the Commons immediately following the Saturday night and Sunday morning worship services. Come and meet Dr. Wicker.

Janet’s Summer Reading Club

Ladies, once again this year, join us for a precious time of book discussion with our Senior Pastor’s wife, Janet Wicker. This year promises to be even more exciting and rewarding than last year. All books are available in our bookstore. Light refreshments will be served at all meetings.

July 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Commons “A Voice in the Wind” by Francine Rivers

This novel is set in the first-century, during the great trials and persecutions of the early church. The heroine is a young slave girl named Hadassah who is torn by her love for a Roman aristocrat, but clings to her faith in the living God for deliverance from the forces of a decadent Rome. The lessons learned are as applicable today as they were then!

August 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Commons “Five Conversations You Must Have With Your Daughter” by Vicki Courtney

This brand-new book has been selected to help moms who are desperately trying to talk with their daughters about sensitive issues in a godly way. It will cause you to focus on helping your daughters understand that they are more than what people see on the outside and they do not need to grow up so fast. You will learn how to dare your daughter to be virtuous. Janet is happy to announce that Karen Head will be joining her for the last session of our Reading Club on August 25. We have added the book “Your Boy: Raising a Godly Son in an Ungodly World” also by Vicki Courtney. This book will do for moms of boys what the other book “Five Conversations You Must Have With Your Daughter” will accomplish for moms of girls. Because both their needs are unique, we will discuss these books in separate groups that night. As you parent and guide a young boy to become a young godly man, this additional book will encourage you, challenge you, and help your son avoid the pitfalls of cultural pressures. See the Lighthouse Bookstore to purchase this book, and add it to your summer reading schedule.

Beach Baptism Next Sunday, July 19 If you would like to be baptized in the beautiful Gulf of Mexico, please contact Linda at 596-8600 x280 for your reservation. Plan to meet us in the Fellowship Hallway next Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

A Bookstore Farewell Dear Church Family and Bookstore Friends, It is with mixed emotions of joy and sadness that I write this note. After much prayer, planning, and discussion with my precious husband, Ray, I have decided to retire from First Baptist Church and the Lighthouse Bookstore. The last seven years have been an exciting adventure serving the Lord, the church body, and my Pastor in two very different ministries. First, the Volunteer Ministry where I had the privilege of meeting so many of you, and then the challenge and pleasure of seeing the Bookstore & Cafe go from architect plans to the amazing ministries they are today! I have been so very blessed to see how God’s hand is in the smallest details of the things He has ordained. I will be eternally grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of it. The future is wide open! Ray and I are excited to see what adventures God will lead us on next. May His will be done! We will take a few weeks off so that I don’t come into the Bookstore and start ringing things up, but then you will see us in worship on Sunday mornings. Thank you for all your love and support over the years. May God bless each of you and continue to bless the ministry of First Baptist Church Naples. In His Service, Cathy Dove

Important Announcements Worshipful Atmosphere

It is our desire that Jesus be the focus in our worship services. Therefore, in consideration of others desiring to worship with limited distraction, we ask each person to do the following: - Please turn your cell phone off or set to vibrate. - Please remain in the worship center (except in the case of emergency) once you have entered to worship. - Should your child become unsettled or noisy during the worship service, please take your little one to the Fellowship Hallway or preschool ministry area in the Education Building where you can comfortably watch the service on a television monitor. Thank you for helping us maintain a worshipful atmosphere for everyone!

Homebound Ministry

We are thankful to the Lord for those who visit and minister to our homebound people, week by week, month by month. We refer to our members as “C.I.A.” (Christians in Action). This is a vital ministry. One day, we may be in that same situation and it means so much to those who are visited that FBCN lovingly cares for them. Should you have an interest in this ministry, please contact Pastor Roy Fisher at 596-8600 x265 for more information.
