First Baptist Church Naples

June 27 & 28, 2009

Our Special Guest Next Weekend, July 4 & 5, is

Dr. Richard Land

President of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission Our worship choir and orchestra will be providing special patriotic music in the Sunday, July 5th service.

Join us as we welcome the

United States Air Force Marching Band

Friday, July 3 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the Worship Center This will be a very special concert including a flag folding ceremony where the 13 folds of the flag are explained. You won’t want to miss that! Plus, the flag that they are bringing has flown over the United States Capital Building.

Next Weekend, We Welcome a High-Impact Leader

Next weekend as we remember our nation’s independence, it is my great joy to welcome Dr. Richard Land to our pulpit. Since 1988, he has served as President of our Southern Baptist Convention Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. With an undergraduate degree from Princeton and a doctorate from Oxford, he is one of the most brilliant thinkers on the American scene and a powerful spokesman for our conservative and biblical values. He has represented us in the halls of Congress, before U.S. Presidents, and in the media on various talk shows and in numerous articles. He was featured in Time magazine as one of the “twenty-five most influential evangelicals in America.” He hosts three nationally syndicated radio programs, speaking clearly and powerfully to the social, ethical, and public policy issues of our nation. Richard’s latest book is The Divided States of America? What Liberals and Conservatives are Missing in the God-and-Country Shouting Match! He takes to task both from the right and the left those who would misunderstand the issue of “separation of church and state.” Dr. Land will speak in all of our services from biblical themes and then will do a freeflowing question and answer time following the services during what would normally be the Bible & Life Group hour. This is a rare opportunity for us to dialogue with a highimpact leader who understands the “ins and outs” of our current political situation and ethical challenges. When the founders of our nation made “a statement of independence” in the final section of the Declaration of Independence, they affirmed “self-evident truths” and our “Creator” God. They were “appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world.” They closed with “a firm reliance on the protection of divine providence.” Our nation began with these godly professions by many men who were themselves godly. Certainly our Pledge of Allegiance is not unconstitutional with its wording, “under God.” As Dr. Land wrote in an article: “One nation under God is not forcing every American to admit the existence of deity or to worship a Supreme Being. It is to acknowledge…that our Republic is not supreme, despite our allegiance to it, but there is One who is.” May we declare our independence this weekend from fear and secular thinking, not “wringing our hands” but “lifting up holy hands” in prayer for our nation and leaders “in faith and truth” (1 Timothy 2:1-8).

Guest Reception

There is a guest reception in the Commons immediately following the Saturday night and Sunday morning worship services. Come and meet Dr. Wicker.

Help Us Protect Parental Rights

The Parental Rights Amendment: SECTION 1: The liberty of parents to direct the upbringing and education of their children is a fundamental right. SECTION 2: Neither the United States nor any State shall infringe upon this right without demonstrating that its government interest as applied to the person is of the highest order and not otherwise served. SECTION 3: No treaty may be adopted nor shall any source of international law be employed to supersede, modify, interpret, or apply to the rights guaranteed by this article. You can sign this petition at ParentalRights.org. Protect the children by empowering the parents!

Janet’s Summer Reading Club

Ladies, once again this year, join us for a precious time of book discussion with our Senior Pastor’s wife, Janet Wicker. This year promises to be even more exciting and rewarding than last year. All books are available in our bookstore. Light refreshments will be served at all meetings.

Our First Night is this Tuesday, June 30 at 7:00 p.m. in the Commons “Shadow of the Almighty” by Elisabeth Elliot

This book tells the gripping story of the life and testament of Jim Elliot. This very personal account by the woman who would become his wife reveals a missionary story that is truly a heroic spiritual pilgrimage. Original writings from Jim Elliot himself are included and give insight into the heart of a man who could pray, “Give me not a long life, but a full one, like you, Lord Jesus.” It is considered a modern Christian classic. Janet is happy to announce that Karen Head will be joining her for the last session of our Reading Club on August 25. We have added the book “Your Boy: Raising a Godly Son in an Ungodly World” also by Vicki Courtney. This book will do for moms of boys what the other book “Five Conversations You Must Have With Your Daughter” will accomplish for moms of girls. Because both their needs are unique, we will discuss these books in separate groups that night. As you parent and guide a young boy to become a young godly man, this additional book will encourage you, challenge you, and help your son avoid the pitfalls of cultural pressures. See the Lighthouse Bookstore to purchase this book, and add it to your summer reading schedule.

Experiencing

GOD

Every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Worship Center, Men’s Ministry and Women’s Ministry meet together around tables organized by Bible and Life Group. Workbooks are on sale in the Lighthouse Bookstore.

Athletic Field Update

The athletic field is well on its way to the completion date of August 1st. This new field will be used for field and track meets, soccer events, and football. All of this was made possible by an anonymous, generous designated gift by one of our members. More photographs and updates will be provided in First Word in the weeks to come so you can take note of the progress.

Preschool Ministry Spotlight Little Known Facts You Need to Know about 2009 Tuesday RefresHer and EnricHer

Did you know that while you have attended RefresHer/Enricher on Tuesday mornings, 50 young children have been learning how God made the World?

Wednesday Night RefresHer and Men’s Ministries

Did you know that while you have attended Wednesday night Bible study, 441 children (birth through fifth grade) have been learning to hide God’s Word in their hearts?

MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers)

Did you know that while young moms have attended MOPS, 66 young children have been learning that Jesus loves them?

Island Kidz Worship

Did you know that while you have attended adult worship, 141 kindergartners have been learning how to worship, give an offering, learn the books of the Bible, pray, and serve?

KidzTown Worship

Did you know that while you attended adult worship, a weekly average of 204 grade-schoolers have been worshipping the Lord kid-style.

Bible and Life Groups

Did you know that while you attended your Bible & Life Group, 1,322 individual children (birth through fifth grade) have been learning biblical doctrines about God, Jesus, the Bible, church, others, and God’s World?

What Does This Mean?

Children can’t teach themselves! Many of us remember the many adults, other than our parents, who invested their time to tell us about Jesus! More than 275 volunteers are needed each week to teach children at our church. Would you prayerfully consider investing your life in the church of the next generation? Through the summer, some classes have no teachers at all! Come and observe, and see what you can do to change the world for Jesus one child at a time. Please call Beverly Day at 596-8600 x351 or email her at [email protected]. These precise numbers represent individual children who have been impacted at First Baptist Church Naples. The numbers are understated, because they do not include the hundreds of children who have visited our church in 2009.

Missions Spotlight

Awestruck Ministries Awestruck Ministries is committed to reaching people the world over with the gospel and expanding the Kingdom using empowered indigenous church planters and pastors. Awestruck has worked in North Africa, the Caribbean basin, and is currently working in Baja California, Mexico. We are pleased to report good things from our May 9-17, 2009, trip to the Foundation For His Ministry (FFHM) Orphanage in Vicente Guerrero, Baja California, Norte, Mexico. Our team comprised of Theresa Vander Kooi, Shirley Smith, and Darlene Nicholas was faithful to the call despite reports of violence in Tijuana and Swine Flu. We are grateful to our LORD for His protection and provision. The team made a huge difference in the operation of the orphanage since every other volunteer team cancelled their trip. We praise these faithful women for going and ministering to 16 disabled children, those with mental disabilities, the unwanted, cast off children in this community, and the 90 orphans that call FFHM home. As they were ministering in the community providing much needed milk and peanut butter (protein), God worked a miracle. There was not enough milk or peanut butter for the number of children in need. So Shirley started praying “Five loaves and two fish”. When Theresa made a comment that they were going to run out of milk and peanut butter, Shirley said, “I know. I’ve been praying ‘five loaves and two fish’. Pray with me.” They both prayed “Five loaves and two fish, LORD,” and He answered. Not only did they have enough milk and peanut butter for all the children, but there was some left over. Our God is still the God of miracles! Byron Cobb and Charles Keen journeyed farther south to meet with our man of peace and further developed that relationship. We look forward to what God will do in southern Baja as we faithfully work to develop relationships and inroads to enable the penetration of His gospel to the remote mountain people, los Californios. For these and other areas, please join us with your prayer support and other considerations as we go and tell that Jesus Christ is LORD. For information on how you can participate, to learn about upcoming trips, or hear more about what God is doing through Awestruck Ministries, email Michael Barnes at [email protected] or give him a call at 239.253.7943. What an awesome week! 176 fifth and sixth grade students “hit the road” with us as we learned how to choose the narrow road, make a U-turn, yield our lives to Christ, and use God’s Word as our GPS. Of those 176 students, 37 were new to our church and 29 prayed to receive Christ as their Lord and Savior! And, they brought in $458.47 to help send students to camp! Wow!! Thank you to the Act One students and to the 39 adult and student leaders who worked tirelessly all week to make our Roadtrip an amazing one!!
