Varian Model 500 Column Valve Module
The Varian Model 500 Column Valve Module (CVM) offers great flexibility in the organization and control of HPLC valves for automated column and solvent selection. The CVM offers extensive flexibility for mounting and control of analytical and preparatory-scale columns, column heaters, manual injectors, switching valves, and electrically-actuated valves. The CVM’s unsurpassed automations enable program ability for unattended method changes, significantly increasing productivity. This unit can be used in conjunction with Varian’s LC and LC/MS product line of pumps, detectors, and autosamplers.

The Column Valve Module contains its own intelligent control system that is accessible both from a front panel keyboard and display or controlled remotely from Varian’s MS Workstation software and Galaxie CDS system. Sophisticated automation can be programmed for the unattended analysis of different sample types that require column, solvent, temperature and other method changes. The CVM keypad and LCD display allow local user control at the laboratory bench.

potentially dangerous valve moves as methods are being built or valves are being moved real-time. Built-in intelligence will automatically convert the system from reverse phase to normal phase operation to maintain column integrity. CVM Hardware: Organization and Features The Varian Model 500 Column Valve Module (CVM) can accommodate many configurations of injectors, columns, valves, and column heaters. The CVM is configured at the factory as an electrical system capable of automated routines and communication with other LC modules, as well as a computer controller.
The column-selection valve allows selection among six positions such as five columns and a bypass line. Up to two independently controlled, full-length column heater blocks holding a total of four columns (5 to 30 cm in length and up to 10 mm ID), a prime/purge valve, and one or more injector valves can be installed.
The main physical features of the CVM are the: front panel, consisting of the manual valves, and the keypad and display. column compartment, which accommodates analytical and preparatory columns, up to two block heaters for columns, and up to two electrically actuated valves, electrical compartment that houses the main circuit board and power supply.
Solvent Switching Capabilities
Each solvent selection valve allows the user to program up to six different solvents to be used by the LC pump. CVM Column Switching Control software provides a solvent compatibility checking feature, which will warn of
