3rd Grade Newsletter

March is already upon us, and we still have so much to accomplish. The state math test will be given on March 4 and March 5. The children are thoroughly prepared for this important exam. Please continue to practice number facts, particularly multiplication facts, with your child. Report cards will be handed out on March 19, 2009. We look forward to seeing you to discuss your child’s progress.

Social Studies/ Science In Social Studies, we are working on map skills. We are also continuing our journey through the country of China. This year’s science project is due March 11, 2009. Science projects can be difficult, especially for the younger children. Your help and guidance may be needed for your child to successfully complete their project. Please be sure that the projects are in by the date they are due.

Reader’s Workshop

In the Reader’s Workshop, we continue to work on developing and improving the reading strategies and skills of all the children. We will be focusing, in particular, on the skills of inference (an especially difficult skill) and identifying problems and their solutions within a story.

Writer’s Workshop During the month of February we completed work on a narrative procedure. We will be working on a response to literature. The children will be writing a letter to one of the characters in a story that we will be reading. As always, the children will be responsible for revising and editing their own work.

Everyday Mathematics We will shortly begin work on Unit 6 of our Every Day Math Program. This unit focuses on the study of geometry. The children will be learning about the various aspects of geometry. We ask that you continue to study number facts with your child.
