2nd Grade Newsletter

Dear Parents, The second grade is doing beautifully. The children have all adjusted to school and are hard at work. The theme for this year is Going Green. Throughout the year we will be discussing ways in which we can help protect our environment. The next two months promise to be exciting as our country elects a new President. Our classes will participate in a mock election and learn about the electoral process. We remind you to read every night with your child as they benefit greatly from this. The Second Grade Teachers

Reader’s Workshop

This year the second grade has begun using a new Reading Program called Open Court/Imagine It! The program is comprised of phonics, vocabulary and wonderful literature. The children receive daily practice in phonics which includes blending sounds together to form words and as well as dictation exercises. In addition, they are learning many new vocabulary words while continuing to strengthen basic reading skills. This not only helps them in becoming more fluent readers, it aids in their comprehension skills as well. The program is broken up into different units with particular themes. Our first theme is kindness.

Writer’s Workshop We are currently working on our first piece of writing which is a Narrative Account. Each child is writing and developing a story about an important moment in their lives. They are learning how to write an interesting lead sentence as well as a beginning, middle, and end to their story.
