5th Grade Newsletter Classes 5-319 & 5-321 November Events at P.S. 238 This month, P.S. 238 will be having a Scholastic Book Fair where students will be able to purchase their favorite books. 5-319 is scheduled to attend on Thursday, November 6 Period 3 and 5-321 is scheduled to attend on Friday, November 7, Period 3. School will be closed on Tuesday, November 4th in observance of Election Day, and Monday, November 11th in observance of Veteran’s Day.

Writer’s Workshop
In November, the fifth grade will continue to write a realistic fiction story using the Writing Process that engages the reader; establishes a situation, plot, point of view, setting and conflict; makes use of appropriate writing strategies, such as dialogue, tension, or suspense; includes sensory details and concrete language to develop plot and character; and provides a sense of closure to the writing.
Mathematics ovember, the fifth grade will focus
We will cover Unit 4 of Everyday Math which focuses on division. Reader’s Workshop
Our emphasis for November is on reading realistic fiction chapter books and social studies informational books. Encourage your child to read at least two realistic fiction books as possible that are on his/her “Just Right” reading level in celebration of Pizza Hut’s Book It program. Ensure that your child reads for a minimum of 30 minutes and completes their Reading Log entry every night. Please make sure that your child is responding to what they are reading by using the 50 Sentence Leads for Reading Responses. Your signature is required on the Reading Log. Encourage your child’s comprehension by asking him/her to restate, summarize, and make connections to what he/she has read.
Social Studies and Science
The fifth grade will continue to prepare for the Social Studies State Exam which will be held on November 11-12. Day 1 consists of 35 multiple choice questions and several short answer questions. Day 2 consists of several documents based questions that the students must read and answer. The students will be given a question they must answer in a well thought out essay using these documents. This month in Science, the fifth grade will continue to learn about Earth Science with an emphasis on the three types of rocks, the rock cycle, and how rocks and soil form.
