2nd Grade Newsletter
Dear Parents, This year our school’s focus has been on setting goals for our students. It has been proven that students learn more efficiently when they know the goals or objectives of a lesson. Each child has been asked to set a learning goal for his or herself in Reading, Writing, and Math. Your child will be responsible to monitor the attainment of each goal. We know all children will succeed at whatever they attempt. We wish everyone a wonderful Spring break and remind you to read every night with your child. The Second Grade Teachers
Reader’s Workshop
We are in the middle of Unit 4 of Imagine It titled Look Again. The unit contains stories of various genres; however, all the stories teach the children about different ways that animals camouflage. The strategies the children will be focusing on will be making connections, making predictions, and rereading the story to make connections. The children are enjoying reading about animals or creatures on land and in the sea.
Writer’s Workshop
April is always a wonderful month for writing. The children are continuing their daily quick writes. Our class goals include writing paragraphs that contain 5-8 “juicy” words. In addition, it is National Poetry Month, which gives us a wonderful opportunity to not only read poetry from various poets, but to write our own poetry. We will be writing Name Poems, Adjective Poems, Number Poems, Rhyming Poems, as well as Cinquain poems.
Everyday Mathematics The second graders are becoming “Money Smart Kids”. We are beginning a supplemental math program named Money & Me. It is designed to provide students with a foundation for understanding money, resources, needs, and wants. You have received a Parent Guide with athome activities to reinforce classroom activities. Unit 9 in Everyday Mathematics focuses on measurements of many kinds including yards, meters, units of weight, and concepts of perimeter and area.
