TERM 3 23rd September 2009
Nelson Central School We e k l y N e w s l e t t e r
Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa te whanau whanui o te Kura Tuatahi o Whakatu – Greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School. Congratulations to Kezia (Rm 2) and William (Rm 2) for representing our school so well at the inaugural Nelson City Cluster Schools Inter-school Speech Competitions last Thursday evening. The competition was certainly tough but we can be proud of Kezia and William for their topics were derived from the work they have been doing in class concerning Human Rights. It was clear they had done their ‘homework’ in terms of research – well done to both of you.
Making Good Choices Being a good role model to others. I say, “Be quiet” on the mat when we’re supposed to be listening to the teacher. Sitting at my desk quietly and get on with my work. (Maya)
Draft Board of Trustees Policy on Child Absenteeism
Doing Our Best Doing our best sounds like: Hard working children. • Pencils scraping against paper. • Tiny whispers, not too loud Doing our best looks like… • Serious children thinking hard … no talking, just writing quietly.
Background The Board of Trustees wants to develop a policy that assists in the determination of whether a child’s absence from school is justified. Justifiable absences are 1. Sickness 2. Attendance at a significant whanau event. 3. A whanau holiday, that has an educational component that cannot take place during school holidays. Parent /caregiver responsibilities The school needs to be informed of the reason for all absences. Except for sickness, all other absences need to be discussed with the individual child’s teacher. All absence must be reported to the school as soon as practicable. An unjustified absence falls outside these 3 specific indications, or if no notification was given to the school or the teacher. If an unjustified absence occurs a record of this will be made. If and when there are any concerns that this may interfere with a child’s learning then relevant steps will be taken to ensure the child’s educational needs are being meet. The board is interested in receiving comment on the draft policy – your views can be left at the front office or emailed to Andy Malcolm :

At Nelson Central School I always try to follow the school rules properly. I think before I act and I act sensibly. These actions help me to always make good choices. (Joe) Getting Along With Others This means making friends, including people being friendly to others. At school I try to include others and be kind. I find this easy because I like getting along with others. (Hattie)
Looking after our world My ideas are to pick up rubbish, don’t pollute our school and reduce your paper. Put your scraps in the compost bin and to plant more trees at school. I would like people to do this because it’s good for the planet. (Hazel) Looking after our world means to me that at school I am responsible for the environment. I pick up rubbish. I plant new trees and I reduce, reuse, recycle. (Zoe) At Nelson Central School we have rubbish bins instead of throwing rubbish on the ground. We have paper recycling at Nelson Central School. We have looked at reducing rubbish in our lunch boxes. I think this is important because if we don’t look after the world it would be polluted too much. (Callum) If you e-mailed us … … between 15 and 17 September please be aware that we had a connection problem and may not have received your message. If you are concerned, please re-send your message.
Scooters Please ensure your child does not leave their scooter in the bike cage overnight. The cage is locked during school hours Values Teachers have been reinforcing with children some values and after that it is the responsibility of the owner to take we hold to be important. These are expressed in our school care of their scooter. charter and discussed with children so they might Lost/left items understand what they mean at a practical level. Children If you have lost or misplaced valuables such as watches, have expressed the school values in their language: please see Judy at the front office – it may have been handed in to her.
