Nelson Central School We e k l y N e w s l e t t e r

Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa te whanau whanui o te Kura Tuatahi o Whakatu – Greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School. Powhiri The students will welcome members of the Education Review Office to our school with a Powhiri on Monday 21 September at 10 am (assuming flights are on time). Parents are most welcome to attend but please be in the quad area by 9:50 am. If you arrive after that time members of the Student Council will direct you to an entrance off Willow Walk so that you do not ‘get in the way!’ We will be using this as a learning opportunity for children. Women wanting to observe protocol should wear a dark skirt. Morning tea will follow the Powhiri. Teacher Only Day School will be closed on Tuesday 27 October to allow teachers to take part in professional development to introduce the New Zealand Curriculum to the school. Parents/caregivers will need to make arrangements for their children on that day. Iron Brion Through the medium of our 'Iron Brion' Barbecue Roadshow, the New Zealand Beef and Lamb Marketing Bureau is encouraging children to think about a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet. Teachers use the road show as part of their teaching materials. If you object to your child taking part in the programme please advise your teacher. After school procedure If you are picking up your child after school or if some-one else is doing that, can you please ensure they are here on time. Children get anxious if the people picking them up are not here to meet them. We ask children to wait near the front office steps if they perceive that their ride is late. While there may be staff around at the time they are not on duty and may not be in a position to help or comfort your child. Human Rights Children are busy learning about human rights this year and I have listed some of the thoughts they have come up with on this topic … Human Rights are … • A right to decent shelter • A right to nourishing food • A right to freedom • A right to education Our weekly newsletter is kindly sponsored by –

Rohan Here is one fight all children have the right to a quality education but a lot of children don’t so please help we can make this become a reality by teaching the children to plant food and learn how to build houses. Elizabeth We can make human rights a reality by teaching teachers to teach everyone how to live better way of living. One right is people have a right to a healthy shelter. Tennis - Sport for a Lifetime

Got these at home? We need your help! Nelson Central, in our commitment to "The Future Starts Now", "It's our world and we are responsible for it" and "Citizenship is Everyone's Business" (past and current school themes for the year) will be assisting Nayland College student to collect ONE MILLION bottle tops to help the environment. There is a global environment conference happening in December and the project aims to encourage Nick Smith and other Environment Ministers to sign up to a reduced pollution level. Scientists say that 350 parts of carbon dioxide per million CO2 in the atmosphere is the safe limit for humanity. We are at present at almost 400. The bottle tops we collect will form part of a big project, culminating at the Centre of New Zealand on the 23rd of October. 350 of the million bottle caps will be represented visually to show the need to reduce our pollution levels. Together with Nayland College we can achieve the 1 million bottle tops target and send a strong message to our Environment Minister and the world that Nelson cares about the planet! Please encourage everyone you know to collect bottle tops for us. We are after any plastic bottle tops, milk, juice, coke etc. Room 9 students will be around to each classroom in the mornings to collect the bottle caps.
