It’s Time To Discuss Converting Your IRA To A Roth IRA
T
axpayers earning over $100,000 annually could not convert their Traditional IRA’s into a Roth IRA until the end of 2009 and that day is rapidly approaching. Conversions beginning in 2010 and later, the $100,000 AGI limit and the prohibition on conversion for those using the Married Filing Separately filing status will no longer apply. For conversions in 2010 only and unless the taxpayer chooses otherwise, the amount required to be included in income can be spread equally over 2011 and 2012 or can be paid in full in the current year. Distributions from qualified retirement plans, 457 plans, 403(b) plans and 401k plans may also be rolled over to a Roth IRA. As with the conversion of a traditional IRA, qualified plan conversions are taxable events, with

gross income for the year of conversion being increased by previously deducted contributions plus net earnings (or minus net losses). This is a very interesting opportunity and must be well thought out and planned for. If your existing IRA or qualified plan balance is relatively small or the majority of contributions in your IRA consist of non-deductible contributions, then converting is a good idea. If you have at least five years before making a withdrawal or you anticipate that your IRA will not be needed for retirement income with the goal of leaving it for your children and you have sufficient non-IRA funds to pay the additional income tax due as a result of the conversion, 2010 is your year to make the move. If you believe that your tax bracket during your retirement years

will be the same or higher than your current bracket or you feel that tax brackets in general will be rising significantly, you are a logical candidate for a Roth IRA conversion. On the other hand, if your tax bracket is anticipated to be much lower in retirement or your income in 2010 will be your best year yet, it will probably be bad advice to recognize the tax now by converting. “Qualified” distributions from your Roth IRA are excluded from gross income and are not subject to federal income tax if it is made after a five-year waiting period and at least one of the following requirements is met: you reach age 59½, you die, become disabled or to pay for first-timehome-buyer expenses. The earnings portion of a “non-qualified” distribution is subject to tax. To determine

any taxable distribution, the funds are considered to be withdrawn in a specified order; any withdrawal is considered to come first from nondeductible contributions, which are not subject to tax. Conversion amounts are considered next and are not included in gross income, but may be subject to the 10% premature distribution penalty if the funds are withdrawn within five years of being converted. Once all contributions and conversions have been withdrawn, any remaining funds are deemed to be earnings and when distributed, are included in gross income. If a taxable distribution is received prior to age 59½, a 10% penalty tax is added to the regular income tax due, unless one or more of the following exceptions apply: • A distribution is made
because of the death or disability of the account owner. • A withdrawal is part of a scheduled series of substantially equal periodic payments. • A distribution is rolled-over into another Roth IRA. • A withdrawal is used to pay for deductible medical expenses. • The distribution is used to pay for certain qualified higher-education expenses • Amounts are withdrawn to pay for first-time homebuyer expenses of up to $10,000. • In certain situations, to pay health insurance premiums for unemployed individuals. • Distributions by certain military reservists called to active duty after 09/11/2001. • A distribution is transferred to a Health Savings Account (HSA). • In case of an IRS levy on the account.

There are several other significant benefits of Roth IRA’s. First, contributions to a Roth IRA may be made even after the taxpayer has reached age 70½, as long as the taxpayer has compensation at least equal to the contribution, subject to the phase-out rules. Second, Roth IRAs are not subject to the mandatory required minimum distribution continues on page 18

2009, their days are now more often spent doing depositions and gemstone analysis. In the evenings though, they still love to plug in their guitars and blow the windows out of a joint. On November 6th, their latest band “Stimulus” will be rocking out on tunes from AC/DC, Foreigner, Sammy Hagar, Journey, Led Zeppelin and the like at Bardi's in Pequannock. They chose the name “Stimulus” as a joke, because in the 80's it would have been a really cool name for a rock
band, but today it's a pun on the economic package. The band is no pun though, fronted by powerful lead vocalist Billy Tegathoff, and driven by innovative drummer George Hoffman, Stimulus is a new favorite for fans of 80's rock. While they've done shows all around NJ, Nov. 6th at Bardi's will be their first time together back in their old stomping ground of Pequannock in over 20 years. Ken and Joe are hoping to see a lot of old friends there.

When you get the chance to shop and support a great cause at the same time, there's no reason why we should not all take advantage of the opportunity -when we celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month each October. Here are some ways to think pink and get a jump-start with your holiday shopping list: -- Check out Key To The Cure. The annual charity shopping event takes place Oct. 15 to 18 at all Saks stores nationwide, all Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH stores and through saks.com. Saks will donate 2 percent of sales up to $250,000 from the shopping weekend to local and national women's cancer organizations and research centers. They are also selling a limited edition T-shirt by Michael Kors. -- The Lisa for LOFT limited-edition bracelet. Already a favorite of celebrities including Taylor Swift, Emmanuelle Chriqui of "Entourage," "Gossip Girl"'s Kelly Rutherford and Audrina Patridge of "The Hills," the bracelet benefits the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in LOFT stores nationwide as well as www.loftonline.com. The bracelet is a great deal for $24.50, of which $5 of the proceeds from each bracelet sold will be donated directly to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation -- a charity dedicated to providing critical funding for research at medical centers worldwide and increasing public awareness about good breast health in order to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer. -- The "Give Hope" collection at White House/Black Market this month. Net proceeds up to $200,000 will be donated to Living Beyond Breast Cancer, a national, nonprofit organization dedicated to
empowering all women affected by breast cancer. Before you buy that dark denim jean this fall, check out the "Give Hope" ones at (www.whitehouseblackmarket.com). -- Take advantage of some great deals offered through the Estee Lauder companies. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation was founded in 1993 by Evelyn H. Lauder as an independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to funding innovative clinical and translational research. The Foundation supports scientists at top universities and academic medical centers worldwide conducting the most advanced and promising breast cancer research that will lead to prevention and a cure in our lifetime. A minimum of 85 cents of each dollar donated to the Foundation goes directly to breast cancer research and awareness programs. In October 2008, $34.5 million was awarded to 166 scientists across the United States and in Australia, Canada, Latin America, the Middle East and throughout Europe. For more information, visit www.bcrfcure.org or call 1.866.FIND.A.CURE. -- Bobbi Brown is an Estee Lauder company that is "thinking pink" this month by offering a limited edition lip set (www.Bobbibrown.com). Other companies include: Bumble and bumble (www.bumbleandbum ble.com) with their classic hairspray; Clinique with their lip gloss on a key chain -- one of my favorite ideas because you can
always find this one in your purse! (www.clinique.com); Jo Malone's Red Roses scent (jomalone.com); and Elizabeth Hurley's handpicked lip set (www.esteelauder.com). Even the guys can get in on the BCA deals with Sean John fragrance specials (www.seanjohn-iamk ing.com). -- Avon is another beauty company who contributes heavily to breast cancer research. Search its website (www.avon.com) for all kinds of interesting products. The Marimekko floral tote for $10 is a great deal, and 100 percent of the net profits will be donated to the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade. -- Wacoal, the intimate apparel company, is so passionate about finding a cure for breast cancer that they have diligently fought alongside Susan G. Recurrent Ear Infections In Children
O
h, no ... not again! Your child awakes feverish and listless, complaining of a hot, painful ear. It is the fourth time this year she’s contracted an ear infection, and you are desperate for answers. More antibiotics, tubes in the ears ... what are the alternatives?
Middle ear infection, or otitis media, affects two-thirds of children by two years of age, making it the most common medical diagnosis in children. Approximately a third of all children will experience at least six episodes of this disorder before entering school. Some children
have up to twelve episodes in a single year. Several bouts of reoccurring infections can result in permanent damage to the inner ear. Typical medical treatment of otitis media involves the prescription of oral antibiotics, commonly amoxicillin. However,
By Dr. Glenn Foss
research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (Dec /91) reveals not only is amoxicillin ineffective for otitis media, it actually worsens the condition. There is also the problem of repeated use of antibiotics and the evolution of “super-

After several episodes of this, it is recommended your child has tubes implanted in their ears, a procedure called tympanostomy tube surgery, the most common operation for children. But wait, didn’t you read something about this ... yes, the April 1994 Journal of the American Medical Association published research that examined 6,429 cases of tympanostomy tube surgery and found less than half of these surgeries were appropriate. Clearly, chronic or recurrent otitis media is a serious health problem for which traditional medicine has limited answers. Faced with this realization, many parents seek alternative methods of treatment, including chiropractic. Indeed, drugless, non-surgical treatment has great appeal, and a growing body of research is showing chiropractic care can play an important role in helping children with chronic otitis media. For example, a recent paper published in Chiropractic Pediatrics documents four cases of chronic otitis media treated with chiropractic care. The four patients described range from 14 months to seven years of age. Each had chronic or recurrent otitis media (usually with sinus infections) ranging from one to seven years. One patient had 60% hearing loss in one ear, and surgery was advocated by the pediatrician. All four

patients had undergone multiple regimen of antibiotics. Chiropractic examination revealed postural distortions and evidence of abnormal spinal alignment and movement (“subluxation”), primarily in the cervical region. Treatment was administered to correct the postural faults and improve spinal function in the areas of subluxation. At the time of the report, all four patients had been free of otitis media for periods ranging from five months to four years without antibiotics or surgery. These outcomes were verified by parental reports, medical examinations, school attendance data and hearing tests. How can chiropractic help chronic ear infections? Many cases of recurrent otitis media are thought to be the result of blockage or restriction of the small lymphatic chains that drain fluid from the middle ear. This blockage forces fluid to build up in the middle ear, creating an inviting environment for bacteria and viruses. The restriction in fluid drainage is caused by increased tension in the muscles overlying the already small lymphatic drainage system in children. Research has demonstrated that spinal joint function effects muscle tone. Therefore, abnormal movement of the joints in the neck or incorrect spinal position may be responsible for tightening the neck muscles, restricting lymphatic drainage. The fundamental goal of chiropractic care is to restore and maintain optimum spinal function, meaning correct spinal position and joint movement. When a chiropractor evaluates a child suffering from chronic otitis media or any other health complaint, posture, spinal position and motion, and muscle tone and function are thoroughly assessed. If abnormalities are detected, the chiropractor may use gentle spinal adjustments and muscle release techniques to help restore normal spinal and muscle function, enabling proper lymphatic drainage to resume. So when your child suffers from recurring inner ear infections that do not respond satisfactorily to medical care, think laterally! Alternative approaches may provide the solutions you are looking for. Drs. Glenn and Christine Foss are the owners of Advance Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy Center in Riverdale. Does My Pet Have An Ear Infection?

roid, your pet's ear anatomy like excess hair or moisture, hereditary or immune conditions, and tumors. Pets with allergies, either to food or something they inhale, often have ear problems. Allergies, is typically the most common cause of ear infections that veterinarians see. Sometimes these ear problems may be the first sign of an allergy. The inflammation from allergies changes the environment within the ear, which leads to secondary infections with bacteria or yeast. If we just treat the infection, we are not getting to the root of the problem. We need to treat the allergies too with diet trials, immunotherapy or medication. Ear mites are a more common cause of ear problems in cats than in dogs. The resultant itching can be intense and may be present elsewhere on the body not just the ears. When ear discharge is seen, many people will assume that their pet's ear infection is due to ear mites. Ear mites discharge
from pet insurance companies, ear infections are a top ten reason for dogs and cats to visit their veterinarian. Dogs and cats can have ear infections or inflammation of the ear canal for many different reasons such as allergies (seasonal/environmental or food allergies ), parasites like ear mites , foreign bodies like plant awns, endocrine diseases such as an underactive thy-
oes your dog's or cat’s ears have an odor? Are they scratching or shaking their head? Is there ‘dirt-like’ material in the ears? What could it be? What should I do? This could be an ear infection and you should seek medical assistance from your veterinarian before the condition worsens and becomes painful. Ear infections are very common. Based on data

has a distinctive black coffee-ground appearance whereas infectious discharge is more moist and ranges from brown to yellow. Other causes of ear infections include foreign bodies, most notably plant awns. They can cause irritation, your pet scratches, and before you know it we have an ear infection. Certain endocrine diseases can cause skin and ear problems such as hypothyroidism and Cushing's disease. Certain dog breeds with heavy, floppy ears such as Cocker Spaniels may be predisposed due to the excess moisture that builds up in their ears. Because there are many potential causes of ear problems, the next step is to visit your veterinarian for a diagnosis. Your veterinarian will use an otoscope to look down into the ear canal. Swabs of the ear can be taken (called an ear cytology), and examined for bacteria, yeast, and mites. If a bacterial infection does not respond to the first antibiotic therapy, a culture and sensitivity may need to be
performed. A thorough history and physical exam may help determine if this could be a hormonal, allergic, or hereditary problem and further diagnostic testing would be needed. It is important to visit your veterinarian promptly for a diagnosis and treatment if you suspect an ear infection. If left unattended they can become very painful, lead to permanently narrow canals or an ear hematoma. Ear hematomas most commonly occur when a dog or cat shakes its head from an ear infection, the ear hits the top of their head, a blood vessel in the ear ruptures and the loose space under the skin will fill up with blood. These will have a noticeably swollen, fluid-filled ear that is extremely painful to the touch. The treatment of choice for ear hematomas is surgery. The key to healthy ears is early treatment and prevention. Check your pet's ears weekly. A slight amount of waxy buildup may be present in normal ears. If your dog swims a lot, has pendu-
lous ears, or a history of ear disease, routine cleaning may be recommended. Excess hair around the ear can be clipped by your groomer to allow more air flow. It's also important to treat any underlying condition, like allergies; otherwise the condition will likely recur. Dr. Matthew Krupnick is the owner of the Pequannock Animal Hospital . All Your Fall Needs.... Plan The Perfect Halloween Party
T
hough trick-or-treating was once the standard when it came to Halloween, more and more parents are forgoing that trend and instead choosing to host Halloween parties for kids and their friends. In part because of households where both parents work, and neither parent can make it home to take their kids out trick-or-treating, and partially due to safety concerns, the Halloween party has become a popular alternative to the standard Halloween.
Parents looking to host a Halloween party this fall should consider the following tips. • Enlist the help of fellow parents. Because so many households are two income households, chances are strong many parents throughout your neighborhood cannot make it home to take the kids out on Halloween. Discuss a party with fellow parents and enlist their help. The idea will probably be warmly received and you'll have a lot less work as a result.
• Get RSVPs as early as possible. Ask parents to RSVP as soon as possible. This gives you a heads-up as to how much food and beverages you need to buy, but it also gives you ample to time to tailor the menu to a variety of children, many of whom might be allergic to specific dishes. • Plan the menu. Though it's common to hear "Halloween" and instantly think of candy, you'll need more than candy bars and lollipops if you're hosting a Halloween party. Since the party will likely

Candy is still an essential element of a successful Halloween party, whether kids are trick-ortreating or not. be on a weekend afternoon, plan to order a few pizzas for lunch or something else that's universally appealing and won't upset anyone's stomach. • Stock up on candy. Kids might not be too excited about forgoing their beloved tradition of trick-or-treating, but that can quickly be offset if you simply give kids candy when they arrive and place a handful of candy dishes around the house. While this might seem like a sugary nightmare, it is Halloween, and kids deserve their candy. • Make it a costume party. The tendency to forgo a Halloween costume when attending a Halloween party is common. But be sure to include on the invitations that costumes are required. This will make it feel more like Halloween for the kids.

and higher prices, according to a survey among licensed U.S. real estate agents and brokers. In 2008, 99 percent of real estate professionals surveyed indicated that having hardwood floors influenced a home’s salability. In addition, nine out of ten agents suggested that homes with mostly hardwood floors will sell faster and for more money, and that people who have lived in homes with hardwood floors are more likely to buy another home with hardwood floors. It is very important when remodeling or building a new home to understand the options available in wood flooring. “Solid wood” flooring can be sanded and refinished to its original beauty, and is made from a single piece of wood in three basic types. The first type is Strip flooring, which accounts for the majority of installations and comes in widths between one and three inches, usually 2 ¼ inches
wide. The second type is Plank flooring, which are boards over three inches wide, and the third type is Engineered flooring, which can be glued down over concrete and is made of five layers, giving customers more options for finishing basements. When it comes to choosing a flooring company, JDL Wood Floors prides itself in quality customer service. We guarantee that your experience with us will be unique, in that we customize our services to meet the individual needs of all our clients. Whether you want to sand, stain, and refinish your existing floors, or install new wood flooring, you will find quality workmanship with us from start to finish. Our pricing is extremely competitive, and you will find that we beat the prices of home centers, floor stores and most flooring professionals. JDL Wood Floors will be launching a new Ecommerce website called

Shawn Anen Receives National Real Estate Award
W
ith over $15 million in sales so far for 2009, and over $70 million sold to date, Preakness Realty’s Shawn Anen has successfully established himself as one of the top and most sought-after agents in Passaic County. One of Shawn’s greatest career achievements is being given the distinction as the 2009 Honoree of the prestigious “30 Under 30” Award, which recognizes 30 outstanding realtors in the nation under 30 years old. Shawn is the first person in North Jersey and the Passaic County Board of Realtors to receive this notable award, a career-
long goal that he eagerly credits to the great success of his clients. With high energy and strong persistence, Shawn’s experience far exceeds his 6 years as an agent. He employs his keen skills in negotiating and technology to their full potential, resulting in successful sales and highly satisfied clients, among whom are New York Giants players and coaches, as well as a member of the San Diego Chargers. Shawn is relationshipdriven and effectively utilizes his strong referral base. He values his great relationships with other realtors to ensure smoother transactions, as well as his invested time with local businesses and contractors to provide extra services to clients. A lifelong Passaic County resident, Shawn attributes his work ethic and noted accomplishments “100 percent” to the most valuable lesson which drives him to excel each day: his “ClientFirst” philosophy. “I’ve found
that providing the very best service is essentially about putting my clients first,” he explains. “This means keeping myself accessible, being a good listener as well as a good communicator, and responding quickly to your needs.” His “secrets” to his achievements include his positive outlook and his willingness to tell his clients the truth.
Shawn Anen is a top agent who provides the integrity and high-quality professionalism that both buyers and sellers desire. For more information on how to team up with Shawn for your real estate needs, please contact him at the Preakness Realty office, 970 Valley Road, at (973) 694-6500.

“The Truth About Nose Surgery”
Before
After Nose Surgery by Dr. Kassir
Are you embarrassed by the appearance of your nose? Are you thinking about changing the shape of your nose or having something done to improve your breathing? If so, you're not alone. Each year, approximately 150,000 Americans of all ages have "nose jobs". Besides making you feel better about your appearance, nose surgery can alleviate or cure headaches and breathing problems, and correct deformities from birth or injury. Many people who have had nose surgery are amazed by the difference it makes in their self-esteem, a factor that usually gives them an edge professionally and personally. These people hope to achieve improved breathing, a more pleasing appearance, or both. That's why it's important to be an informed consumer when it comes to nose surgery.
Computer Imaging Gives A Preview Fortunately, today's hightech innovations have made Before

nose surgery more predictable. The doctor can use computerimaging equipment to project your face on screen and show how you might look after nose surgery (as well as other facial procedures you might be having). This allows you to communicate to your doctor what changes you would like.
the nose has been injured, insurance may cover part or all of the surgery.
Q. How much does it cost? R. The surgical fee is from $2,500 to $6,000, depending on the problem being corrected. Charges for the anesthesiologist and the facility are additional.
Common Questions Q. How much pain is involved? R. Pain isn't the issue it once was. Few patients report much, if any, discomfort, because very little packing is used. Q. What's the recovery time? R. You will have a splint and bandage on your nose for several days, so it's usually about a week before patients return to work or start socializing again. By that time, the swelling has gone down. Some people cover up their bruises with make up. Q. Does insurance pay? R. If there's a breathing problem that's being corrected or if
Choosing A Surgeon It's important to choose a doctor who is a specialist in the nasal airway as well as nasal aesthetics. As a board certified facial plastic surgeon who is also board certified in otolaryngology, Dr. Kassir does facial work exclusively. What this means for the patient is that the doctor has extensive experience in facial procedures such as nasal surgery; thus, he understands not only aesthetics (how to make the nose look attractive) but also function. "This is very important to people who are involved in sports and exercise," says Dr. Kassir. "They want to breathe well and look good".
Are You A Candidate for Nose Surgery? Take this quick test—look in a mirror and answer these questions. __Does your nose appear too large or too small for you? __Do you notice a dent or bump on the nasal bridge, when viewed from the front? __Does your nose appear too wide when viewed from the front? __Does the tip of your nose droop or plunge up? __Is the tip of your nose thickened or enlarged? __Are your nostrils excessively flared? __Is your nose off-center or crooked? __Has a prior injury made your nose out of proportion to your other facial features? __Do you have any problemswith: 1) Breathing through your nose 2) Chronic Nose or Sinus complaints? If your answer was YES, even just for one of these questions, you may be a candidate for a “new nose.” Call our office at 973-6929300 to schedule your personal consultation with Dr. Kassir.
