“Sharing a common thread!” Board Meeting The next board meeting will be Tuesday, April 7, 2009, 6:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny. It's Carol Doak in April! You don't want to miss our April14th meeting. We have someone very special coming ---CAROL DOAK. Her presentation is "Paper Piecing, When, Why and What If". Have you signed up for her paper piecing workshops on April 14 & 15th?

President's Letter What a busy time of year for our guild!!! We have our challenge coming in May. June is the month for Presidents Challenge and July is The Quilt Show; donation quilts, Country Store, and quilts to show. I know a lot of us work best under pressure but you can turn in donations and country store early. HA HA HA HA--not me either I'm alway last min. Early or last minute all help is really appreciated. So what are you doing reading this President's letter go, run, quilt!! Don't run with your rotary cutter.

She's a best-selling author, celebrated teacher and lecturer and award-winning quiltmaker. Carol Doak has greatly influenced the art and craft of quiltmaking for more than a decade, both in the U.S. and internationally. Carol Doak has been called the "Queen of Paper Piecing"—she has raised the popularity of paper piecing, her trademark technique, to heights never before seen in the world of quiltmaking. Her accomplishments include a sizable collection of popular books, including Easy Machine Paper Piecing, which was named by Quilter's Newsletter Magazine as one of the 30 most influential books in the past 30 years. An impressive range of her beautiful blueribbon quilts have been featured in several books, such as Great American Quilts 1990 and The Quilt Encyclopedia and on the cover's of Quilter's Newsletter Magazine, Quilt World, Quilting Today, Ladies' Circle Patchwork and McCall's Quilting.

Remember June meeting is at a different location, Ankeny Baptist Church. and we will have a Quilt Show wrap up meeting in July but not til the21st.

Our guild meeting is April 14th, 7:00 pm at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny.

April's “Block of the Month” pattern, Fool's Square, is in the newsletter. Please use a “primary” color & a white background when making your block.

Carol will be presenting two workshops while in Ankeny, more information is on our website. Contact Linda Northwick, 964-5594, for additional details.

See ya at the April meeting, I am looking forward to Carol Doak. Because nice matters, Debbie Pierschbacher

Secretary's Report AAQG Board Meeting Minutes, March 3, 2009 The Members present: Lanae Rohwer, Linda Northwick, Deb, Lisa Starr, Celeste, Susan Body, Mary Lee Martz, Pam Messer, Kay Huntimer, Donna Jo and Ramona. Minutes were read. Discussion for hiring a graphic artist; Lanae will talk with a gentleman that she works with. We are to the point that some ads need just the expertise of a graphic artist. Susan is spending quite a few hours cleaning up ads for the newsletter. Sandy will send 3 quilts for the “trunk show” on guild night. Pat Lucas will be vending. Retreat: Still openings. Flowers were sent for Anita Uthe’s funeral. Discussion was if treats should be before the meeting. The board decided not to- so food does not accidently spill on someone’s quilt. Quilt Guild Meeting Minutes, March 10, 2009 There were 80 members and 6 guests. In June we will be meeting at the Ankeny Baptist Church, we will also be having a July meeting- July 21 (after the quilt show). We are up to 49 donation quilts. We need to start making some bags- good job ladies! No one should be at retreat before 9 AM on Thursday. Tonight is the last day to sign up. The checks have been given to Randi. Still one more spot for the massage. Still need more Country Store items. The entry forms deadline is June 9. The quilt was shown- AWESOME JOB!! Becky McGregor has the raffle ticket packets- see her after the meeting. Carol Doak’s class will be here at the church. We had a wonderfully showing of show and tell, block lottery, door prizes, birthdays. With the snow storm up north Pat Lucas didn’t make it, so we played Quilt –O and had a lot of winners. Refreshments and fellowship ended our meeting. Respectfully submitted, Ramona Tapper

Juvenile Arthritis Quilt Project Here is a project that I know guild members will be interested in –and hopefully some small groups too. Janeen will let us know how the project is progressing —here is how it came about. submitted by Janeen Pearson The project is the brainchild of a 14 year old freshman at Roland-Story High School. Her name is Kaylee Wellik. She has been suffering from Juvenile Arthritis since she was 4 years old. As she enters the second decade of having this disease she is working harder and making a difference helping people with arthritis. Her project that she is working on is a welcome kit for new families diagnosed with arthritis. In the kit she is including educational materials and home made quilts. Her goal is to have 100 quilts by the end of 2010. Depending on the success of this project the Iowa Arthritis Foundation would like to eventually extend this to more families. Currently Kaylee's grandmother has been helping her make these quilts. Since the quilts are geared to children of all ages. Juvenile arthritis can strike infants all the way to teenagers. They are looking

for fabric, batting, thread and even finished quilts. They would even be willing to join any groups that would like to make quilts for this project. Any questions please contact Janeen Pearson - sorry my phone number in the guild directory is incorrect. The correct number is 515-321-9699 and my email is [email protected]

Pam Clarke Workshop Offered at County Quilt Studio in Nevada The Country Quilt Studio will be moving in April! At last the Studio at the farm is close to completion. The new address will be 61523 – 260th Street in Nevada. As the crow flies, it is about two miles due south of our previous location. We’ll be celebrating all summer with specials on rental time and classes. Most exciting is the visit of Pam Clarke in July after the AAQG Show. Pam will be doing a 7-hour lecture/demo workshop at the Studio on Sunday, July 12, 2009, 10-5, that will include the opportunity to try some of her techniques on the Millennium or George in the Studio. The title of her workshop is Design from Simple Shapes & Blocks. Take a simple circle, swirl, 9-patch, heart and add a few basic shapes to create fantastic designs to be used in borders, blocks, sashing, corners and set-in blocks. No longer will you be searching through your pre-cut stencils to find the perfect fit. Pam will show you how with these simple shapes to make Amish feathers with a circle, beautiful swirl shapes for large borders or small sashing. Discover how to use any size heart shape to create an elegant feather heart to be used in plain blocks or half square triangles. Take a 9-Patch block and using the piecing of the block as a reference, stitch outstanding designs with very little marking. Then see how simple this is achieved as Pam Demos using the Longarm from the free-motion side of the machine. There will be loads of ideas with a workbook supplied for each student. The cost of the workshop is $150 which includes lunch. A $50 deposit will save your place with the remainder due the day of the workshop. We have plenty of room. Contact Vicki at (515) 382-1815, (515)231-1819 or [email protected] visit the Studio’s website www.countryquiltstudio.com. Pam will also be teaching two classes at the Studio on Monday, July 13th. So everyone has a chance to attend, she’ll offer this class in the afternoon 1-4:30 p.m. and in the evening class 5:30-9 p.m. The topic will be Fearless Beginnings to Free Motion Quilting with Design with Lines. Cost will be ~$35. These are techniques that can be adapted to any domestic machine as well as the longarm. So, if it’s classes, rental time, Pam’s workshop or class or just to stop by and chat, we’d love to see you.

Established in 1976, this family business has blossomed into a full service shop featuring quilting, cross stitch, punchneedle, embroidery and tatting supplies.

Heritage Designs has an excellent selection of threads, including over 50 colors of Aurifil. They carry the entire collection of King Tut variegated thread too.

In 2009 Heritage Designs was selected as a Top 10 Quilt Shop by Quilt Sampler magazine and will appear in the Spring/Summer 2009 issue. There's a big party planned for Saturday May 9th so save the date! Details are on their website!

Above is a sneak-preview of the quilt pattern that Heritage Design will be featuring in the Spring/Summer 2009 issue of Quilt Sampler magazine.
