NATURESCAPES FILM FESTIVAL SEEKS SUBMISSIONS Do you love to take photos? Does the thought of shooting video fill you with excitement? If so, then don’t miss the chance to have your work seen by a broad audience! Pfeiffer Nature Center is preparing for their 3rd annual Film Festival, offered with the assistance of a Decentralization Grant from the NYS Council on the Arts. Although the Nature Center is located in and receives our funding through the Cattaraugus County Arts Council, Film Festival submissions are accepted from ten western New York counties. Submissions are encouraged from people of all ages and points of view. We want your interpretation of this year’s theme: Naturescapes. In response to requests, we’ve added a new participation category this year - automated PowerPoint presentations. So now you can enter the Film Festival whether you prefer working in video or stills! Be sure your submission packs a punch, because brevity is key: submissions must be between 30 seconds and 5 minutes in length. “The Film Festival is so much fun! We’ve had winning entries from 8 year olds and art teachers, college kids and grandmothers. With the addition of a category for still photography this year, lots more people will be able to enter,” said Margaret Cherre, Pfeiffer Nature Center Executive Director. “This competition is certainly not limited to people who consider themselves artists; we want everyone to enter! It’s a great opportunity to explore the outdoors from a different perspective, and then to publicly share your work.” Winning films will be shown at a public viewing of the Nature Center’s Film Festival in fall, 2009. Prizes will be awarded in two categories (videos and automated PowerPoint presentations), and in as many as four age groupings in each category. With no entry fee required, there’s no reason not to submit! For more information, submission guidelines, and an entry form, visit the Pfeiffer Nature Center web site at www.pfeiffernaturecenter.org/filmfest.html or call our office at 716-933-0187. Grab your camera and go outside! f GENESEE LIBRARY HOURS Winter Hrs: Mon. & Thurs. 9am-5pm; Sat. Noon-4pm.

• According to the Crayola Company, you can eat 3,500 of its crayons a day and still not reach the level of toxicity found in an ordinary glass of drinking water. The company didn’t mention how - or why -- anyone would consume that many crayons in a lifetime, let alone a single day. • It was 19th-century British author Elizabeth Charles who made the following observation: “To know how to say what others only know how to think is what makes men poets or sages; and to dare to say what others only dare to think makes men martyrs or reformers -- or both.” • Good news for junk-food lovers: Beginning in 1996, the United States Department of Agriculture started putting frozen French fries in the “fresh vegetables” category. • Back in 1935, the owner of the Chicago Cubs baseball team predicted that night games were “just a fad.” He wasn’t much of a prognosticator, it seems. • Some people claim that rubbing the nose of any statue of Abraham Lincoln is good luck. It’s not really known why, though; some speculate that it’s because Lincoln’s children used to pull on his nose for luck. However, only one of his four children survived to adulthood, so it’s questionable whether his nose was ever lucky for anyone. • The ubiquitous summertime flip-flop sandals are known in Australia as “pluggers,” are called “slops” in South Africa and “slippers” in Hawaii, and New Zealanders call them “jandals.” • It’s been reported that on the morning of Friday, Nov. 22, 1963, an American psychic named Jean Dixon predicted, “Something dreadful is going to happen to the president today.” At 12:30 p.m. that day in Dallas, President Kennedy was assassinated.

Dealing With The IRS
TAX TIP O THE F WEE K
It’s a moment taxpayers dread. A letter arrives from the IRS. Don’t panic; many of these letters can be dealt with simply and painlessly. However, if they are requesting a payment that you weren’t expecting, ask your tax preparer to review it. Many times additional assessments are made in error, or penalties can be waived. Don’t pay Uncle Sam more than you need to. Stop in or call our office for more information.

News From Your Congressman Eric Massa New York State Residents will see Immediate and Long-term benefit from American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan Congressman Eric Massa salutes today’s monumental signing by President Obama of his historic plan to create jobs and boost the economy Pittsford, N.Y. - Rep. Massa hailed the signing today of critical legislation to create and save 3.5 million American jobs. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was approved by a vote of 246-183 last Friday. President Obama’s job creation package passed by Congress will rebuild America, making us more globally competitive and energy independent, and transforming our economy for long-term growth; give about 95 percent of American workers an immediate tax cut; and invest quickly in the economy. “Today I applaud President Obama for signing the Economic Stimulus package to help get our economy back on track,” said Congressman Eric Massa. “Our Nation is in crisis, and today’s signing of this critical bill will help take our country in a new direction.” “This package is the largest tax cut in American history and 95% of working Americans will see immediate tax relief from it. Additionally this new plan will protect and create 3-4 million jobs to help set us back on the path to prosperity. Finally this package creates a higher standard of accountability and transparency to ensure that our tax dollars are spent wisely with absolutely no earmarks in the bill. In fact, you can go to recovery.gov to see line by line what is in this package.” “America is facing an economic crisis greater than any since the Great Depression, with a staggering 3.6 million American jobs lost in the last 13 months and an unemployment rate here in New York that has climbed to 7.0%,” said Rep. Massa. “As the President works to address the mortgage foreclosure crisis and get credit flowing in our financial system, this plan will begin to turn our economy around and bring jobs, relief and hope for New Yorkers.” This jobs and economic recovery plan contains strategic efforts:•Creating or saving 215,000 jobs here in New York over the next two years;•Providing a Making Work Pay tax cut of up to $800 for as many as 7,070,000 workers and their families, designed to start paying out immediately into workers’ paychecks, as well as tax cuts to spur businesses large and small;•Transforming Our Economy With Clean, Efficient, American Energy and Innovation and Technology that will create more than 1 million jobs;•Lowering Health Care Costs and improving care by computerizing medical records, which will create hundreds of thousands of jobs, and helping those who cannot afford health care in these tough times;•Modernizing Roads and Bridges to create jobs with an extra $1,120,684,723 here in New York along with other critical infrastructure like high-speed rail, the boldest investment since the creation of the interstate highway system a half century ago;•Education for the 21st Century, modernizing schools and making college more affordable with improved Pell Grants for the 461,816 Pell Grant recipients here in New York and a higher education tax credit for 295,000 students in our state;•Helping Workers Hurt by the Economy, including 671,500 New Yorkers that are out of work, those who have lost their health care, and seniors; and•Saving the Jobs of teachers, police officers, health care workers, and protecting the vital services they provide. “There is no immediate solution to our recession, but this plan will move us in the right direction,” said Rep. Massa. “This jobs and recovery plan will create or save an estimated 215,000 jobs in New York by the end of 2010, according to the White House. Congress will continue to work with the President to get credit flowing again, keep more Americans from losing their homes, and bring common sense to Wall Street so that our economic recovery is more effective and sustained. Americans have always come together in the face of challenges and we will do so once again.” f

FINE DINING FOR LESS Always check to see if the city you are in has a culinary school. I live in metro Portland, Oregon, home of The Cordon Bleu-Western Culinary Institute. The students getting ready to graduate as chefs and/or restaurant managers run a restaurant that is open to the public. You get a gourmet meal at a budget price because you are “eating their assignments.” The food, presentation, and service are great because the students want a good grade. Some community/junior colleges have culinary programs and they might offer “their assignments” to the public as well. Eat great and eat cheaply! -The Baroness in Oregon Every child is an artist. Parity Isn’t Working To hear NASCAR tell it, Brian France is a regular Thomas Jefferson. The NASCAR chairman and CEO wants equality. He wants all his race cars to be created equal. NASCAR, like so many other professional sports, has been “trending parity” for well over a decade now, but the new car, implemented partially two years ago and fully last year, is the ultimate step. Trouble is, parity isn’t working. In 2001, 19 different drivers won races. Last year there were 12. The number has gone down in six of the last eight seasons. Two years ago, one multi-car team, Hendrick Motorsports, won half the races. Last year three drivers -- Carl Edwards (9), Kyle Busch (8) and Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson (7) -combined to win two-thirds of the races. Four teams divided up the 12 spots in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. In short, while NASCAR was making everything just alike, the rich were getting richer and the poor poorer. This comes to no surprise to one of the sport’s elite owners, Jack Roush, who doesn’t much mind. “It’s not going to be the case that a change in the car is really going to dramatically change the make-up of who wins the races and which manufacturers are dominant and other things,” he said. “I think the cream will rise to the top regardless.” If this pattern doesn’t change this year, NASCAR’s got problems. The facts are undeniable. In the short term, making the cars almost just alike has made the outcomes of too many races just

and owner, and he’s been struggling recently in both capacities. NASCAR’s decision to ban most testing hasn’t diminished his optimism. “I might be wrong,” said Waltrip, “but I do believe that we’re learning as much or more about the new car than we ever have before with computer simulation, and with seven-post shaker machines and the wind tunnel. “I feel real confident that things are going to get better this year.”
alike. That wasn’t the plan. The teams with the most resources figured out the new car more quickly, and Victory Lane has become more and more exclusive. Last year Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth and Kevin Harvick didn’t win any races. Dale Earnhardt Jr. won one. Fans of those four drivers take up a hefty share of the seats in NASCAR grandstands. There is, however, hope. Perhaps there’s still a bit of “tomorrow” left in the new car. Maybe the haves will start catching up this year. It remains to be seen whether or not that is just wishful thinking. Kurt Busch finished only 18th in the standings last year -- he won the championship in 2004 -- but he sees light at the end of the tunnel. “Quite a bit of work is going down, but in the end, this Car of Tomorrow is going to be a good thing,” he said. “I can’t say that right now it’s approved by everybody’s standards, but for us and myself, the interjection of safety is obviously the key thing.” Michael Waltrip has the perspective of both driver

JILL JACKSON’S HOLLYWOOD By Jill Jackson HOLLYWOOD ... Now that Oscar has been presented, thank you’d and is standing proudly on the winners’ shelves, mantles and whatever, we can look at other happenings. Tinseltown is still talking about the octuplets born here. How the eight babies will be raised, etc., etc., etc. And without a shadow of a doubt, somewhere along the line there will be a documentary, docudrama or whatever based on the births.
While looking for news recently, a bunch of us in the business started discussing age differences between the leads in some movies. For instance, Sean Connery was 39 years older than Catherine ZetaJones when they co-starred in “Entrapment” in 1999. In “A Perfect Murder,” filmed in 1998, Michael Douglas was 28 years older than Gwyneth Paltrow, and in “The Fountainhead,” Gary Cooper was 26 years older than Patricia Neal. During the filming, Cooper and Neal fell in love and had a

Latch on to “Joseph Kennedy Presents His Hollywood Years” by Cari Beauchamp (Knopf). You’ll learn all about the Kennedys, his many affairs and lots more really juicy stuff. Newcomer Amanda Seyfried gets her big break on the big screen, joining Annette Bening in “A Woman of No Importance.” In this adaptation of the Oscar Wilde comedy, she plays a young woman who falls victim to the games of British society. You may have seen Amanda as the daughter with an unknown father in “Mamma Mia!” And you can look for her in several more films due out this year: “Boogie Woogie,” “Dear John” and “Jennifer’s Body.” Remember the name: Amanda Seyfried. You’ll be seeing it a great deal in years to come. Did you know that Elizabeth Taylor’s fifth husband, Richard Burton, gave her a 60-carat pearshaped diamond that was originally 244 carats before it was cut down?
NOTICE As you know, we run many reader ads for government auctions, job positions, earn money at home, cash loans, credit cards, etc. Most of these ads come through state and national ad networks. Most of them are selling directories or listings of where to APPLY FOR what is advertised. This information may be available at less cost elsewhere. While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Read the ads carefully. Some charge a fee, as noted in the ad, directly to your phone bill when you call them. Once again, we can’t verify claims for every ad. Please consider their offer and make a voluntary and reasonable buying decision. Moneysaver Advertising, Inc.
It was named The Taylor-Burton diamond. After Burton died, Elizabeth auctioned off the stone, giving the proceeds to build a hospital in Botswana. Elizabeth loves jewels. Still has a great collection, but nothing like that big one. And while we’re on the subject of jewels. Did you know that when Halle Berry won the 2003 Best Actress Oscar she was wearing the $3 million, 5.54-carat Harry Winston diamond. On loan, of course. This the largest vividorange diamond in the world. Halle wore it on her left pinkie finger. Like Cinderella, she returned it when the ball was over. *** BITS ‘N’ PIECES: Inhabitants of The Garden District area of New Orleans are still ecstatic over all the honors going to “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” which was filmed in the area. And from Reader’s Digest’s “Laughter, the Best Medicine” book: “There was a fellow who always had bad luck. He found a Magic Lamp, rubbed it, and a genie appeared and gave him the Midas Touch. For the rest of his life, everything he touched turned into a muffler. *** NOW’S THE TIME Postal rates are projected to rise again in May. Congratulations By Tresa Erickson You’re sitting down at the kitchen table eating a sandwich when the telephone rings. You answer it, and on the other end, your daughter begins shouting that she is engaged. You smile to yourself, remembering when her fiancé stopped by and asked for your blessing. You knew this moment was coming; you just didn’t know when. Now that the cat is out of the bag, you may want to start thinking about hosting an engagement party for your daughter and future son-in-law. Traditionally, the bride’s parents host the engagement party to announce the couple’s engagement, celebrate their upcoming union and introduce themselves to the groom’s family. However, if the bride’s parents are unable to host the party, the groom’s family or any relative or close friend of the couple may do so. Of course, you should ask the couple first if they would like an engagement party. Some couples embrace the idea, while others think having an engagement party, along with a bridal shower and wedding, is too much. Don’t be upset if the couple declines your offer. If they are excited by the idea, sit down with them and select a date together for the party, no more than three or four months after the proposal. Traditionally, all guests invited to the engagement party should be invited to the wedding as well. However, if the couple is planning a small affair, you can still have a large engagement party. Just make sure that everyone you invite to the engagement party knows that the wedding is going to be small.

That way, if they don’t get invited to the wedding, they won’t be offended. You also need to consider what type of engagement party to throw. You can go formal or informal. Keep the tastes of your future inlaws in mind as you make this decision. If they like casual gatherings, then a cookout at home or a party at a restaurant might be ideal. If they would prefer a more formal gathering, then a sit-down dinner at a fine establishment might be better. While selecting the type of party to have, remember that the big event, the wedding, remains. Don’t upstage it.

With a venue in mind, you can work out the rest of the party details, including the food, entertainment and décor. These should match the tone of the party, whether informal or formal. A cookout might not require any special entertainment or décor, whereas a formal sitdown dinner might. While you are planning these details, make sure you set a budget and stick to it. Once you have the details of the party in place, you can start sending out the invitations. You can purchase them or make them yourself. Gifts for the couple are not required. Some guests, however, may inquire about the matter. Attach a note requesting no gifts, if that is what the couple wants, or a list of registries, if they don’t mind receiving gifts. Remind the couple to register for gifts in the low-to-middle price range. An engagement party is not the occasion to ask for large, expensive gifts. Wrap up your party planning by designating some helpers. If you are having the party at your home, make sure you have someone to greet guests at the door. Assign a couple of volunteers to help with the food and another to serve as photographer for the day. If parking is going to be an issue, find a couple of buddies who are willing to be valets. As with any special event, planning an engagement party takes time and effort. Just remember to discuss your decisions with the bride and groom, and you can’t go wrong. ~~~~~~

How Sweet It Is By Tresa Erickson When it comes to the wedding cake, couples have many options. Some may skip the cake entirely and go with a dessert bar instead. Some may order one small wedding cake and several sheet cakes to serve to their guests. Some may forgo the main cake and serve smaller cakes in various flavors at the reception tables. Whatever your personal preferences, make certain you discuss the matter in great detail with your fiancé, and should you decide to go with a wedding cake, keep the following trends in mind. The wedding cakes of today hardly resemble those of yesterday. Gone for the most part are the rich, three-tiered, heavily decorated cakes and in their place is a wide range of cakes customized specifically for the bride and groom. When selecting a wedding cake, couples often look to the location, theme and season of their celebration as a guide. A simple affair on the beach in the middle of summer might not call for the same type of cake as a formal evening affair in the winter. The actual design of the cake is up for grabs. Some couples may opt for the traditional three layers, while others may go for fewer or additional layers. Tiers can be of the same or different heights with the same or alternating designs. Some couples may request the design of their wedding cake incorporate the traditional flowers, either made of silk or frosting, while others may choose dots or xxxxxx

Although once popular, basket weaves and swags appear to be on their way out, as do plastic columns and foil boards. Common cake flavors include carrot, chocolate, lemon, spice and vanilla, with many couples requesting each layer of their cake to be a different flavor. Some couples go an alternative route and choose unusual flavors like espresso, hazelnut and gingerbread. Frosting may be buttercream or fondant, though many couples today seem to favor the former. As for the top of the cake, couples no longer have to stick to the traditional brideand-groom cake toppers. They can go with flowers, sculptures or monograms. Monogrammed letters in silver or tin make for stylish cake toppers. For those that prefer bride-and-groom toppers, they’ll be glad to know that the traditional toppers have made a comeback and can be customized. Many companies now make toppers that match the actual bride and groom in hair color, skin color, age and more. These are just some of the hottest trends in wedding cake design. Whatever type of cake you choose, make sure it is flavorful and presented well. It should serve as a focal point at your reception, so place it in a prominent position and decorate the area around it. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Carrying the Bride over the Threshold •Carrying the bride over the threshold dates back to ancient Rome, when it was considered bad luck for the bride to stumble or trip as she entered her new home. •The Romans also had a custom of dragging reluctant brides into their new homes. Throwing Rice • Originally thrown to increase fertility (symbolizing the close relationship between women and the life-bearing grain). •Rice was often used as a basic food, and thus, rice was thrown to wish plenty and prosperity. Something Old, Borrowed, Blue and a Penny •Something old - the old from your heritage combines with the new of your marriage into a perfect union. •Something borrowed - the borrowed item represents friendliness. •Something blue the blue item denotes faithfulness. •A penny in the shoe is for prosperity in your marriage.

EARPLUGS I have to use earplugs to sleep at night due to a snoring spouse. When purchased in the drugstore, they can get pricey for the ones that work best, which are the soft rubbery ones with a string attached. However, I stumbled upon a three-pack of the same type in the local hardware store in the hearing protection section. The three-pack was the same price as a single pair from the drug store, and they work just as well. Obviously, I sleep better knowing I’ve saved money as well. -Lisa C. in Marlborough, MA

GOOD HOUSEKEEPING ONE Mini Corn Dogs It was more than 60 years ago at the Texas State Fair that Neil Fletcher invented the “corny dog,” a sausage on a stick, dipped in corn-bread batter and fried. This oven-baked version is a treat for kids of all ages. 1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour 1/3 cup yellow cornmeal 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons cold margarine or butter, cut up 1 tablespoon shortening 3/4 cup whole milk 1 package (16 ounces, about 48) miniature frankfurters, drained and patted dry Ketchup and prepared mustard (optional) 1. In large bowl, stir together flour, cornmeal, baking powder and salt. With pastry blender or 2 knives used scissors-fashion, cut in margarine and shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. With spoon, stir in milk until mixture forms soft dough that leaves side of bowl. 2. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface; knead gently 4 to 5 times just until smooth. With floured rolling pin, roll dough into 14-inch round (about 1/8 inch thick). 3. Preheat oven to 450 F. With floured 2 1/4-inch round biscuit cutter, cut out as many rounds as possible. Press trimmings together; wrap with plastic wrap and set aside. 4. Place 1 frankfurter on each dough round. Bring sides of dough up around frankfurter; pinch in center to seal. Place wrapped frankfurters,

Cookie Jars Q: My mom gave me three old cookie jars that are from the 1950s. I wonder if they have any value. -- Sue, Arkadelphia, Ark.
The first compact discs appeared in stores in the early 1980s and could play 74 minutes of music on the insistence of Sony chief Akio Morita. He felt a single disc should be able to carry Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
A: Before I answer your question, let me share a personal story. During the early 1950s, I raced home from school each afternoon so that I wouldn’t miss a single minute of “The Howdy Doody Show.” The broadcast featured a boy marionette with 48 freckles -- a freckle for each state of the union -- and an assortment of other characters that included the host, Buffalo Bob Smith. Just before my birthday in 1953, I spotted a

Howdy Doody cookie jar in a catalog and coaxed my mother to fork out the $3.98 cents for it. She did, and the cookie jar occupied a place in our kitchen well into the next decade. Eventually, I left home, and mother donated “Howdy” to a thrift shop. Imagine my chagrin when I recently discovered that Howdy Doody cookie jars now routinely sell for well above $500. Although the feeding frenzy has cooled with collectors in recent years and prices have softened, cookie jars are still popular. Even common jars from good manufacturers often sell in the $50 to $100 range. Some of the better companies include American Bisque, Brush, McCoy, Metlox, Regal, Shawnee and Treasure Craft. Collectors should be cautious when buying cookie jars. Reproductions have flooded the marketplace, and the Mammy Cookie Jar marked McCoy might be a knock-off. Do your homework, examine the jars carefully for chips, cracks and other flaws, and learn as much as you can about current values. A quick check of eBay revealed several interesting examples, including Mother Goose by McCoy, $90; Dopey from Snow White by Treasure Craft, $150; Frog Prince by Metlox, $60; Dutch Girl by Shawnee, $220; and Betty Boop by Clay Art, $40. One of the better groups is the American Cookie Jar Association, which has about 200 members nationwide. Dues are $10 per year and membership includes an excellent newsletter. The contact information is 4005 Spyglass Lane, Bethany, OK 73008; and http:// www.cookiejarclub.com. Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to
