Many people equate the warm weather with outdoor fun. After all, winter is for huddling inside by the fire sipping hot cocoa, right? Not necessarily. Although there may be the tendency to want to hibernate when it’s cold, it’s actually beneficial to get out of the house and stay active. Enjoying the outdoors year-round provides exercise, may alleviate seasonal blues, and can offer new perspectives on natural landscapes. The cold weather shouldn’t hinder your outdoor activities. Here are some fun pursuits anyone can enjoy. Best of all in this economy, most are free. Get moving: Running and walking enthusiasts are generally out rain or shine. Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean you have to put these activities on hiatus. Set up a club of like-minded enthusiasts in your neighborhood and meet for a daily jog or stroll each day. Experiment with different routes and even stray “off the beaten path” once in a while. Who knows what winter wonderland you may discover? Don a few extra accessories, such as a hat and gloves to keep away the chill, but don’t over-bundle. Enjoy winter sports: Skiing, ice skating, snowboarding, snowshoeing, ice fishing, and sledding are just some of the winter sports that you can enjoy. What’s more, they can often be a family affair and tailored to all different skill levels. Explore new activities: Some people think that activities such as hiking, horseback riding, mountain climbing, and cycling are just for the warm weather. In fact, with the right gear these pastimes can be enjoyed any time of year. Camping outdoors at a state park may take on an entirely new perspective when there is a chill in the air. Hiking during the colder months could open you up to different foliage and opportunities to see animals that delight in cold weather. There are even those who enjoy a cold-weather swim. “Arctic” or “polar bear” clubs abound. If you think creatively, there are plenty of fun ways to be active when it is cold outside. Even a trip to a local park to feed the birds or enjoy an impromptu winter picnic may fit the bill. When staying active during the winter months, be sure to put safety and fun first.

Buyers Guide to aid area business in improving Web presence

MARTINSBURG – The winds of change are blowing through the Buyers Guide. The Buyers Guide has partnered with Kaesu, Inc. to revolutionize the way local advertisers reach their customers. Kaesu operates Cooler Ads, an innovative Web-based marketing system. “We see this Cooler Ads program as a very unique approach that allows our customers to have a web presence through their use of our print product that is unprecedented in the region,” says Buyers Guide Publisher Tom Aird. Kaesu, which is Japanese for “to change,” works with community newspapers to transfer traditional print media ads onto the Internet. The ad is faithfully reproduced, and converted into a searchable form on the web. “Every single ad in our publication goes out online automatically and is fully searchable. We are already seeing our listings and ads coming up in the first page of search engines. For folks who’ve had no previous online exposure, this is a tremendous leap forward for them,” says Aird. Kaesu Co-owner Joe Nicastro said people running ads in a Buyers Guide publication will get extra exposure online, even if they already have a Web site. “In today’s competitive market all businesses need some sort of online exposure. Consumers read an ad in the paper, then usually try to find the Web site to find out

more information. With this system the ads can be picked up by search engines, and consumers can click on the advertiser’s information to find out more. If the advertiser has a Web site when a consumer clicks on the ad, they can also get to the Web site,” says Nicastro.

In today’s competitive market all businesses need some sort of online exposure. – Joe Nicastro Aird said most newspapers and even traditional Web sites try to support their sites by selling banner ads and sponsored links on top of what their customers have already spent with them to be in print. The Buyers Guide’s approach to advertising is all-inclusive. The Buyers Guide held a seminar for its sales and graphics staff last month to teach the group about the new Cooler Ads program. All of the staff members attended the information session, and the reaction was enthusiastic. Brian Jolliff, production manager of the Buyers Guide, said the additional features of Cooler Ads would make it easier for people to manage their advertising

accounts. The program creates an archive of old ads, allowing people to proof their ads online, and even helps create an online shop. “It’s going to take time to build up the program, but within a few months it’s going to be a really nice tool for the advertisers,” said Jolliff, adding that advertisers can post videos, news articles, coupons and pictures through Cooler Ads as well. To use the program, advertisers simply need to have an e-mail address. “It’s the way of the future. Statistics have shown that within five years, everybody is going to be online,” said Jolliff. In the near future, the Buyers Guide will hold local training programs to show advertisers how to use the new system and demonstrate the many features available with Cooler Ads. The Cooler Ads program is part of the Buyers Guide’s efforts to increase its Web presence. In the last several months, the company has increased its content available on the Internet, running complete editions of all of its publications online. The Web site also features interactive functions for readers to discuss stories and contribute ideas.
