BOB MATHIAS Bob Mathias lived an extraordinary and fulfilling life that has inspired many to persevere against great odds. In 1948, at the young age of 17, Mathias made a name for himself winning the Olympic decathlon gold medal in London, England. In 1952, at the Olympics in Helsinki, Finland, he repeated his victory and set an Olympic and world record. Among many other great achievements Mathias served four years in the U.S. House of Representatives, was awarded the Theodore Roosevelt Award, graduated from Stanford with a B.A. in Education, and starred in four major motion pictures. Mathias grew up in the Central Valley and is a graduate of Tulare High School. On September 2, 2006, Bob Mathias passed away in his home in Fresno, CA. In memory of Bob Mathias, his family and friends have established the Bob Mathias Scholarship Fund at the Fresno Regional Foundation.
