Calling All VOLUNTEERS Whoever said “it takes a village” was right, especially when it comes to providing for, chaperoning and planning events for 80 middle school kids. Therefore, any volunteer help you can offer is greatly appreciated. Even though children at this age say they don’t want you around, they do, and it makes them feel good to see you involved and participating. Volunteering at one event makes a difference! Not to mention, it’s a great way to meet other parents who can relate and “feel your pain” when it comes to raising middle school age kids!! 2009-2010 Volunteer Opportunities Christmas Concert Rehearsal at Eastman during the school day Lunch provided for the students– 3 parents required to help Christmas Concert– Assist back stage– 3 strong parents Winter Concert– 3 parents Winter Concert Reception– 3 parents Junior Clinic –3-4 parents Solo/Ensemble 5th Grade Instrument Placement– 10-12 parents New Parent Student Orientation– 3-4 parents Brevard Field Trip-Chaperone, Plan trip, pack the bus, unload the bus. 10-12 parents required. Express Yourself thru Orchestra T-shirts still available!! T-shirts are still available in most sizes for $12. If we run out of a size, and get enough pre-orders of that particular size, we will re-order that size. We are considering re-ordering different colors, and /or designing a different T-shirt just for the JSMS Orchestra. We went with a general design so that all in Orchestras within the region could wear and enjoy for the future.
BACK OF T-SHIRT
A few extra DVDs were ordered just in case you didn’t order one of our Spring Concert. Hopefully they will be ready before school ends. If not, they will be personally delivered to you over the summer, or available for pick up. Our Orchestra is now larger than D-B’s Orchestra since it has tripled in size over the past 2 years. Our goal is to be able to offer assistance as needed to any student that might be interested in trying Orchestra. The goal is to ensure Orchestra education continues using a template that is self sustaining and not solely reliant on public funds. Your help is needed. Donations go towards Instrument purchases, and Educational purchases for our Music Library. The Music Library offers an enriched curriculum for all or our Music Students.
FRONT OF T-SHIRT School computers will be down over the Summer due to upgrades. Please remember to check out our Myspace page for updates throughout the Summer.
www.myspace.com/ johnsevierorchestra Remember…. All of fundraisers are held to ensure that our costs are affordable for all of our activities, including our end of year Brevard Trip that you won’t want to miss.
Ordering required supplies through the Booster Club could save you money Due to the downturn in the economy, Mrs. Hanson has worked with the Booster Club to streamline her must have list for Orchestra even further. We have identified a source that will allow us to order supplies at a deep discount for our parents. Please print and complete your order form, then mail it to Tracy White, Treasurer, at 1 Huntington Pointe, Kingsport, TN 37660 by the deadline. The order form is also available for download at www.myspace.com/ johnsevierorchestra.
Private Lessons While private lessons are not required, it’s a good idea to take private lessons so that your student feels comfortable with his/her instrument. Summer is a great time to take a few lessons so that your child has the foundation to excel in Orchestra. Our first concert isn’t until Christmas, so don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of time to learn how to play your instrument. But remember, it will take lots of Practice!
Practice Makes Perfect
Mrs. Hanson
Plan to practice at least 20 min. a day, 5 times a week. Only thru practice will your student feel comfortable and learn to enjoy the process. We all know, the more we enjoy something, the more likely we are to stick with it and excel.
Otherwise known as the JSMS Orchestra teacher extraordinaire. Your upcoming 6th grade student is sure to follow the path of those who have proceeded them, in that they will LOVE Mrs. Hanson. If you want to know what’s going on with your child, she’s usually the one to ask. She’s very keen when it comes to noticing changes (whether good or bad) in her students (and our kids). One reason is because she’s a mother herself. Mrs. Hanson has 3 school age kids who are all involved in their own extracurricular activities, so she, like most of us, is a very busy lady.
“Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest, heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul.”
In addition to being a mother, wife, and teacher, she is also an accomplished musician and entertainer. Because of her busy lifestyle, she is not always readily available for all of the questions that may arise after hours. Therefore, please be patient. She will return your call and answer your questions at her earliest convenience, because her students and their accomplishment are extremely important to her.
