Jahrhunderts;in seinem Schaffen nehmen Kompositionen für Viola sowie Kammermusik mit Viola eine vorrangigeStellung ein, sodaB Rolla nicht nur (laut Louis Spohr) der beste Bratschist seiner Zeit, sondern auch einer der wichtigsten Komponisten für die Viola war. Von Rollas 215 Kompositionen für Streichduo (dieseZahl stellt ihn übrigensan die ersre Stelle für dieses Kammermusikgenre!)verwenden99 die Viola: 20 fúr 2 Violen, 78 für Violine und Viola, 1 fürViolaund Violoncello. Letzteres wird hiermit zum erstenmal gedruckt; es ist als Manuskript des spáten 18. Jahrhunderts in der Biblioteca Greggiati in Ostiglia (Norditalien) überliefert und trágt die Nummer 81.326 im ThematischenVerzeichnisder Werke Rollas von L.Inzaghi-L.A. Bianchi (Mailand 1981), Der originaleTitel lautet ,,Duetto a Viola e Violoncello del Sig.AlessandroRolla". AlessandroRolla was born in Paviain 1757 and died in Milan in 1841. From 1782 until 1802 he was Solo Viola player, then Violinist and finally Maestro di cappellaattheCourtof theDukeof Parma.From 1803 until 1833 he was conductor of the ScalaMilan and in addition, from 1805 onwards,concert masterof the private chapelof Vice-King EugeneBeauharnais.1808 - 1S35 he wasalso a reacherfor violin and viola at rhe Milan Concervatorium. In 1795 -1797 Paganiniwas Rolla's pupil in Parma,and the reciprocal musical as well as technical influence of the two men makes itself felt for a long time. - Rolla is the most prolific Lombardic composerof instrumental music of the late 18th and beginnlngof the 19th centuries.Within his output compositions for Viola as well as chamber music for combinations with Viola occupy a pre-eminentposition and, accordingto Louis Spohr, Rolla was not only the best viola player of his day, but also one of the most important composersfor his instrument. Rolla composed215 works for String Duo which, purely numerically,placeshim at the head of all composersof this chamber music combination. In 99 of them he employsthe Viola: 20 areDuos for two Violas, 7 8 for Violin and Viola, and 1 for Viola and Cello. This latter work is herewith issuedin print for the first time. It is handeddown to us as a manuscriptof the late 1Sth century in the BibliotecaGreggiatiin Ostiglia (Northern ltaly) and bearsthe number BI. 326 in the Thematic Catalogueof Rolla's Works by L.lnzaghi L.A.
