Dear Friends, Fall break is a colorful time of the year. It often reminds us of the varied aspects of God: His creations, His character and His revelations.

Dear Friends, Some of you will remember all the promises your parents made to you when you were little (eg. “We’ll play baseball tomorrow”, or “I’ll take you to see that movie this weekend.”) When they didn’t keep their word because of something unexpected arising or simply forgetting, we’d call them on it. We would say, “But, you said you would…You didn’t keep your promise.” From the inspiration Stanley Ott, who is my friend and a Presbyterian minister, I decided from now on that I ought to be careful about what I promise and what I plan to do. There is a difference. We can make a plan (and we all know plans can change), but it is easier to explain to kids that our schedule or plan has changed rather than admitting that we have forgotten a promise. That doesn’t teach them the value of making and keeping a promise. Thankfully, God keeps all of His promises, and we want to do likewise. From now on I will say to my children, for example, “I’ll let you stay up late tonight.” Unless I learn of something that we need to get up early for, I try very hard to keep that plan. That is a plan they are counting on and looking forward to so I ought to keep it. According to 2 Corinthians 1:20 we are to let our “yes” be yes and our “no” be no. More important than my plan, though, is what wonderful promises God has given us. No matter how many promises God has made, they are always good, and He is fully trustworthy.
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” PSALM 139:23
