Hellen Keller Hellen Keller was born on June 27, 1880 in Tusculum, Alabama. When she was 19 months old, she experienced a severe childhood illness, which left her deaf and blind (only a very partial sight). At the first few years of her life, she was only able to communicate with her family through a rudimentary number of signs.
