What Is EPSM? (Equal Potential Safety Mat)

Brief Background – why is EPSM a life-saver? A woman died when she grabbed the handle of a refrigerator, just as a lightning discharge was downloaded onto the EARTH-connection leading to the refrigerator! Her sister who was nearby was injured although she was not touching anything. An analysis into the forces involved would have revealed that the ELCB or modern-day RCCD could not have made any difference in this case, because the Earth-VOLTAGE-rise or Earth-POTENTIAL-rise at the refrigerator handle was not caused by the power supply lines. Switching off the power supply would have no difference on the outcome!

The only way she could have been saved would be to put her in a situation or an environment like a bird perched on a 132KV high-tension cable! The bird is not affected by the tremendously high voltage because the bird is at EQUAL POTENTIAL (no voltage-difference) with the cable (therefore no current flowing through its body).

When both of your feet are on the EPSM – if there was a high voltage present, it would not conduct to your body because you are standing on INSULATING-material, gradually shifting to be at equal-potential. As soon as you are on the EPSM, it would gradually equalize your body-potential to that of the refrigerator’s or any other equipment that are also on the same EPSM (forming one safe-island). Because, once you are on the EPSM, you are at Equal Potential with ALL equipment or conductors on it, you have an environment as safe as that of a bird perching on a high-tension cable.

How can EPSM be successful & effective? • • • • •

It must be kept dry at all times It must be connected to the same EARTH-point as the refrigerator handle You must not touch the refrigerator handle before both your feet are on the EPSM Once on the EPSM, you must not touch any item that is not on the same EPSM. How does EPSM work? The Bird-analogy •

When the bird approached the high-tension cable, whatever STATICvoltage-potential it was at would be shifted to that of the high-tension cable’s, gradually – because it was not touching another cable If the bird’s wings were spread between two of the high-tension cables, it would be cooked immediately The bird was safe at more than 100,000volts because it was not touching another cable – hence there was no potential difference to conduct current through its body.

The EPSM •

There must not be any substantial voltage difference between your left foot and your right foot (step-potential) when you step onto the EPSM – hence the EPSM must present a floating platform with immunity
