What Did Jesus Say? The Master's Instructions
About the Editor JEAN THORNTON SOLOMON A classroom in the remote hills of Los Angeles County was not where Jean envisioned herself when she left the lights and cameras of acting in film and television. She wondered as she surveyed the rows of faces not so intently focused on textbooks, What if the Bible were easy to read? What if Bible study were simplified for reluctant or even busy readers? Would they learn from the Bible if they could get straight to the point? Would they do right if they could get the knowledge for themselves? These questions circled through her mind as Jean observed the diverse class of high school boys—too many of them struggling with the printed word—behind bars in a secured county camp. It wasn’t an “ah-ha” moment that inspired her. It was more like an inner compulsion to embark on a God-idea, a directive from the Spirit. Having earned a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction, she would compile a collection of the words of Jesus, the Master Instructor. Yes, others had assembled his words before, but recognizing how Jesus taught, this What Did Jesus Say? would feature The Master’s Instructions, telling people what he wanted them to do. In the spirit of learning, Jean seeks to create environments of discovery and spiritual growth for believers who sincerely desire to mature in the teachings of the Master. A native of historic Virginia, she divides her time between her home state and sunny California. Jean serves with fellow intercessors in prayer ministry and manages GladMedia Group, an e-publishing, media, and marketing company.

What Did Jesus Say? The Master's Instructions
Foreword This condensed spiritual guide is designed to help you learn about God through the words of Jesus, to get to know him for yourself, to discover his insight to your perspectives, and to fill your mind with eternal truth. It will facilitate your understanding of biblical teachings without imposing my or anyone else’s interpretation. You will be guided to reach the inspired meaning of each theme by working with the passages themselves. In interactive study, you will engage in the asking, knocking, and seeking that Jesus himself advocated. What Did Jesus Say? does not replace the Holy Bible. It is intended as a tool to enhance Scripture study, accommodate time constraints, and pinpoint your focus. The suggested approach encourages you in a manner that will free your mind to be open to both practical and holy inspiration. The goal is to get into the words of Jesus, so that his words get into you. In Eastern cultures, students addressed their teachers as Master, and Jesus of Nazareth was honored in this way. You will be learning directly from him through his words and his spirit. It is with devotion, humility, and love of the Christ that I set out with you to study What Did Jesus Say? The Master’s Instructions. For your convenience, all Scripture references are included in an Appendix behind the chapter outlines.

What Did Jesus Say? The Master's Instructions
Introduction Words on a page are nothing. Words are nothing in the sense that flint is nothing until put to appropriate use. When flint is struck to create sparks, a small fire is kindled, one which can be fed to grow enormous and give off a roaring heat. Words were an integral part of the ministry of Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ. It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John 6:63 If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. John 14:23 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. John 15:7
The words of Jesus brought new and awakening life to many, healing to others, and freedom to even more. His spoken words performed wonders. They were food for thought to the masses and righteous sustenance to his close followers. His mission kindled what grew into a roaring fire, a burning desire for the fullness of life that he promised. Repeatedly, Jesus gave specific instructions that were to be followed. He endeavored to have his listeners, disciples, and detractors get beyond his words and deeds to the truth that they represented, to the spiritual reality that he embodied. He taught by illustration (parable) and by example (his own life according to prophecy). Jesus proved his words. He was a way-shower. He plainly gave instructions for his followers to do as he did. Jesus the Christ left an exacting account that leads to hopeful results, not just promised for the future, but available here and now. Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. John 4:35

What Did Jesus Say? The Master's Instructions
The words that Jesus spoke on earth are recorded in the first five books of the New Testament. His words are referred to as red letter text, and in some Bibles they are printed in red. This concise work is derived from the King James Version. It focuses on specific words that recur most frequently in his discourses. Jesus used these words as commands to tell people what to do. The words presented here were directed by Jesus to those who agreed with, wondered about, or wished to benefit from his mission. And so it is with believers today. We study Scripture to understand how to live.

How To Use This Book Please print out the pages of this book and enclose in a binder for convenient reference. The format has been condensed to save paper. Assemble these suggested items before you begin your study: The Holy Bible (with Red Letter Text) A Dictionary Writing Paper or a Notebook Pen or Pencil Highlighter Pencil or Pen The chapters of the book are compiled according to action words that Jesus spoke. Key words have been emphasized throughout the passages. As you begin each section, look up the key word. Record in your notebook all the possible meanings, even if they seem somewhat unlikely. Think about them. You will refer to them again. Next, read through the commands chapter for that key word. Using your marker, highlight any other verbs or action words that are used. Passage by passage, think about what Jesus is saying—to you. Substitute the various meanings of the key word as you contemplate the meaning of the passage. Look up the definitions of other words as you feel necessary. Speak the passages aloud, as if giving the instructions yourself. Listen to how they sound. Think about what adjustments you would have to make in order to do what the words say. If you are unfamiliar with the agricultural references or examples from nature, use other references to get some facts. Then read through the passages again. This is seeking, asking, and knocking. Meanings must be relevant in order to be effective. Nobody can really give them to you. They must unfold from within. Pray that meanings will be revealed, like sparks from a flint to kindle your understanding. Please note that some passages do appear more than once. This is intentional for two reasons. First, the recorders of the accounts considered them to be significant, so they appear in more than one book of the Bible. Second, passages tend to repeat in the various chapters because they contain more than one key word. This repetition will help you notice the importance of the instructions.

What Did Jesus Say? The Master's Instructions
Also, you may observe that some passages have been abridged. There are places where expository or descriptive text has been removed. It does not alter the effect of the instruction; rather, it is intended to provide continuity. There are many passages that do not appear in this volume. This is because they contain no direct commands or related implications. If you should feel inclined to read an entire related section, please, follow the leading of the Spirit and do so. Finally, indulge me to suggest that you eliminate distractions as much as possible. Take off your shoes, your opinions, and your worldly thinking. Begin with prayer and end with thanksgiving. Abandon yourself to each study, allowing in the quiet and openness that will enable you to receive divine wisdom, guidance, and revelation. Interact with the words as if Jesus were addressing you personally.

Matthew 4:10 Worship . . . it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
5:24 Be Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
4:17 Repent Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
5:25,26 Agree Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
4:19 Follow Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. 5:12 Be • Rejoice Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
5:16 Let Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
5:29,30 Pluck, Cut, Cast And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
5:19 Do Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. 5:37; 40 Let But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also.
5:23,24 Come • Go Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
5:41 Go And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

Matthew 5:42 Give, Forgive, Receive Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
5:43-48 Love Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
5:48 Be Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
6:1-4 Take heed, Beware • Do Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
6:3,4 Let But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:

That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
5:44,45 Pray But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
6:5-8; 9-13 Pray And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

Matthew But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. 6:26 Behold Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. --After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
6:31-33 Seek Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
7:4,5 Look, See Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. 6:16-18 Fast Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. 7:6-8 Give, Forgive, Receive Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;

7:15-20 Know • Take heed, Beware Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
7:7,8 Knock, Seek Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?
8:22 Follow • Let Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.
Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

Mark For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
9:23 Believe, Have faith If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.
All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
10:6-9 Let But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.
7:27 Let Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.
For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;
7:29 Go For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.
And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
8:15 Take heed, Beware Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.
10:14 Come Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.
8:34 Come • Let Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
10:19 Do Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.
8:34-37 Follow Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.
10:21
Come • Go • Follow • Give, Forgive, Receive • Have One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Mark 13:5,6 Take heed, Beware Take heed lest any man deceive you:
For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.
For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things.

12:1-3; 15 Beware, Take heed Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
11:33-36 Beware, Take heed No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.
12:4 Be And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.
The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.
12:5 Fear But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.

6:20 Be But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.
4:24 Worship God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
6:53-58 Eat, Drink Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
4:35 Say Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
4:35-37 Behold Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.
As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.
And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and

8:11 Go Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. 13:17 Know If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
8:31,32 Know If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

14:1 Believe, Have faith • Let Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

What Did Jesus Say? The Master's Instructions
John If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
14:15 Keep • Love If ye love me, keep my commandments.
15:7,16 Ask If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
14:27 Let Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
15:4-11 Abide Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
15:12 Love This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
15:14,15 Do Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
15:18 Know If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
15:20 Learn, Remember Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

The Be-Attitudes Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. Matthew 5:3-12
Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh. Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets. Luke 6:20-23

What Did Jesus Say? The Master's Instructions
Psalm 91 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
