WEEK 9
NFL GAME REVIEWS
New York Jets (5‐3) 26 Buffalo Bills (5‐3) 17 It’s not surprising that this is the 112th starting QB that Brett Favre has faced in his career – he’s beaten most of them. But could Old man Favre beat Trent Edwards and his Bills? Well it started well for Brett and his Jets – Jay Feely gave them an early 3 point lead thanks to a 37yd field goal. It didn’t last long though, After Marshawn Lynch picked up 42yds on a shovel pass ‐ Trent Edwards went deep in the end zone, hitting Derek Fine from 9yds out. The lead closed down after Edwards fumbled the ball away courtesy of a Darrell Revis sack – that set up Feely from 26yds out for another 3 points. After a long Bills drive Trent Edwards capped it off with a TD strike to Roscoe Parrish...that was intercepted by Abraham Elam, he took it 92yds to the house, which ties the 3rd longest interception return by a Jet! After halftime it was Feely’s leg that got the game going again – he struck a 20yd field goal for another 3 points. Ryan Lindell was finally called out...it was a 53yd attempt – and he nailed it. The score was 16‐10 Jets. After Favre hit a big gain to Jericho Cotchery, Thomas Jones didn’t think twice when he powered in from 9yds out and took half the Bills defence with him! After Ryan Lindell missed a 43yd field goal attempt – Favre hit the wrong guy and Jermaine Greer intercepted him – he took it 42yds to the house. Jay Feeley tried to slow down the Bills comeback chances by hitting a 31yd field goal, but it was finally over when Trent Edwards was picked by Darrell Revis in the end zone. The Jets move to 5‐3 and get a crucial win on the road. Game Notes....
o o
Favre is STILL breaking records! – It’s official – Brett Favre is now the first player in NFL history to throw 300 career interceptions. Failed – The Bills lost for the first time at home this week....Brett Favre got his first win in Ralph Wilson Stadium....the Bills failed to score a rushing TD for the first time this season.
Detroit Lions 23 (0‐8) Chicago Bears (5‐3) 27 Apart from Tennessee, Detroit is the NFL’s only perfect team – probably not in quite the same way though! With weapons like Calvin Johnson, how can this team be so bad? Well so far it’s been all about scoring...but as you’re going to see – today it was the small matter of a missed extra point that came back to haunt the Lions. With the game underway it took only three offensive plays for the Lions to show us why they’re 0‐8, Dan Orlovsky was intercepted by Mike Brown at the Chicago 48yd line. Robbie Gould turned this into 3 points ‐ he struck a field goal from 36yds out. Kyle Orton is the starter for Chicago and he put his body on the line when he ran the ball in himself from 5yds out – he did put the Bears up by 10 though. The Lions finally got on the board early in the second quarter, Kevin Smith ran around the left guard from 1yds out...BUT...Jason Hanson’s extra point was blocked! Devin Hester...”don’t kick it to him!” well the Bears wish they hadn’t kicked it to him – he fumbled the ball on the kickoff and it took just 1 Orlovsky pass to Calvin Johnson – 17yds out and the Lions were ahead 13‐10. Orlovsky was starting to heat up – he hit Shaun McDonald from 14yds out and all of a sudden the Lions were up 20‐10. The second quarter ended with a field goal exchange – Robbie Gould hit one from 41yds out, followed by Jason Hanson’s first of the day, it was on‐line from 52yds out. After news that Kyle Orton had an injured Knee – it was “Interceptaurus Rex” who steeped in at quarterback. He got straight to work, hitting Rashied Davies from 6yds out to bring the bears within 3. After an interception exchange early in the fourth Quarter, Rex Grossman decided to put his body on the line as well – he ran in from 1yd out and gave the Bears the lead. The Lions could manage nothing more than a fumble on their next possession and the clock ran out on them to end the game. The Lions are still perfect and the Bears take another step closer to the play‐offs. Game Notes.... o
o
Longer and longer – The Lions have lost 15 of their last 16 games, including nine straight. Ghost of Hanson’s Past – Detroit's missed extra point in the first half came back to haunt them at the end of the game. Because of the miss, the Lions ‐ down by four ‐ were forced to go for a touchdown on the final drive.
Jacksonville Jaguars (3‐5) 19 Cincinnati Bengals (1‐8) 21 Happiness or Relief – which do you think was more likely to have come from the Bengals first win of the season? They did it against a struggling Jaguars offense that, despite a late surge, just couldn’t edge the Bengals. Ocho Cinco played a large part in this game and it was a connection with Ryan Fitzpatrick from 2yds out that gave the Bengals the early lead. Fitzpatrick also got the second score of the game – he opened up a 14 point lead thanks to another hook up, this time with Chad Johnson. Josh Scoobe insured the Jags didn’t go into halftime scoreless – he hit a 52yd field goal attempt, the score was 14‐3. Cedric Benson opened up the third quarter; his 7yd TD put the game securely in favour of the Bengals. The Jags don’t ever lie down though...they began a comeback with a 26yd Josh Scobee field goal, followed immediately by a fumble recovery on the kickoff – Montell Owens with the 18yd TD return. The Jags got the ball back again at the end of the quarter, remember Maurice Jones‐Drew? Well he shot up the middle from 1yds out, but the Jags just couldn’t convert the two point attempt and couldn’t tie the game. The Bengals run out the clock and hold off the Jags late surge – they get their first win of the season and the city of Cincinnati can breathe again. Game Notes.... o o
You’re outta here! – After getting in a fight with 2:22 left in the third quarter, Jaguars DT John Henderson and Bengals guard Andrew Whitworth were both ejected. JJ 15 ‐ Jonathan Joseph was all over the field for the Bengals. Besides knocking down the potential game‐tying two‐point conversion attempt, he recorded a career‐high 15 tackles to help Cincinnati win its first game of the season.
Baltimore Ravens (5‐3) 37 Cleveland Browns (3‐5) 27 We haven’t heard much from the Browns this season – they aren’t a standout team like the Titans or Lions – they’re mulling through the season, winning a few games and losing a few – like a gentle stroll through time! The Ravens however have the no. 2 ranked defence in the NFL and have started a surge of game wins...could it continue this week? Matt Stover opened up the game from 41yds out – 3 point field goal for the Ravens. After Derek Anderson fumbled the ball away, it didn’t take long for Joe Flacco to send the ball air‐mail to Derek Mason 47yds down the field to give the Ravens a 10 point lead. It took even less time for the Browns to answer back – Joshua Cribbs took the kick off through the Ravens special teams to the house – 92yd kick‐off return. Phil Dawson brought the Browns level with a 23yd field goal early in the second, followed by a 32yd Matt Stover field goal. The half ended with a 54yd Phil Dawson field goal attempt – he was on‐line and the Browns take a 3 point lead in to the locker room. After the break, the Browns came out stronger – Derek Anderson went deep to favourite target Braylon Edwards from 28yds out for the TD. On their next possession Anderson was back again, finding Jason Wright in the end zone 7yds out. LaRon McLain is the new HB in Baltimore – he ended a long drive with a TD for the Ravens, closing the score down to a 7 point gap. 4th quarter now and the Browns just had to hold off the Ravens...it didn’t go according to plan when Joe Flacco hit Derrick Mason from 28yds out to tie the game. Stover gave the Ravens the lead back with a 22yd field goal. The game was put out of reach when Derek Anderson went back to Jason Wright for a TD...he was picked by Terrell Suggs...you know the score...Suggs goes 42yds down the field – the final score was 37‐27 Baltimore win. Game Notes....
o
Stopped Dead! – The Ravens have not allowed an opposing player to gain 100 yards on the ground in 26 straight games.
o
Nice Rice– Willis McGahee was active but did not start for the Ravens. Rookie Ray Rice filled in well, he ran from 154yds on 21 carries. His 60‐yard run in the fourth quarter set up the winning field goal.
Houston Texans (3‐5) 21 Minnesota Vikings (4‐4) 28 Matt Schaub and Gus Frerotte...two career backups who finally get the chance to lead a team – which one learnt the most? Gus Frerotte opened up the day with a 55yd pass to deep threat Bernard Berrian. It was Adrian Peterson who capped off the drive with a 1yd TD run. Frerotte’s good fortune didn’t last though – he was intercepted on his next possession, by Jacques Reeves, who took it 44yds back to the house. The second quarter opened with a Gus Frerotte hit new receiver Sidney Rice from 8yds out to give the Vikings the lead. After Schaub was intercepted and on his next possession fumbled the ball away, Gus Frerotte went back to the air‐mail service and sent Bernard Berrian a package from 49yds out to give the Vikings a 14 point lead going into halftime. A halftime substitution led to Schaub being benched and Sage Rosenfels taking over at Houston QB. He came out as if he were making a statement – hitting David Anderson for a 3yd TD. Fourth quarter now and Visanthe Shiancoe (Try saying that 10 times fast!) caught Frerotte’s 3rd touchdown pass of the game from 25yds out to give them a 14 point lead. Rosenfels finished the game by hitting star receiver Andre Johnson from 14yds out to close the scoring. The Texans couldn’t muster anything else and the game finished with two consecutive sacks of Rosenfels. The Vikings move to .500 and the Texans, after early success – are starting to lose it. Game Notes.... o
Why do they call it the RED zone? – The Texans have now allowed their opponents to score touchdowns on 18 of 22 red‐zone opportunities.
o
2020 – Texans DE Mario Williams now has 20 sacks in his last 20 games.
Greenbay Packers (4‐4) 16 Tennessee Titans (8‐0) 19 STILL the only unbeaten team in the NFL...no‐one believes they are quite the Patriots last year – and of course it’s too soon to talk about 16‐0, but...they’re halfway there! The Packers look promising...Rodgers has played well, they have however suffered a couple of tough, tight losses – Could the Cheese‐heads topple the Might of the Titans? Rob Bironas kicked off the game and the scoring! He hit a 31yd field goal. Second quarter now and Bironas nailed his second, this time from 25yds out. Mason Crosby narrowed the margin to three, thanks to a 23yd field goal. Aaron Rodgers got the TD game rolling – He Hit Favre’s Favourite Donald Driver from 5yds out. Chris Johnson must be a contender for rookie of the year, he ran in from 3yds out to change the lead back again. The Titans took a 13‐10 lead into halftime. Bironas and Crosby exchanged field goals – 22yds and 25yds respectively. Fourth quarter, Mason Crosby was on‐line from 38yds out for the game tying field goal...last few second of the game and Rob Bironas was off‐line from 47yds out – the game goes to overtime! The Titans won the toss and received – it took only one drive for the Titans to move into Bironas field goal range – 41yd attempt – he didn’t miss twice. The Titans win in overtime and the Packers come within points of knocking off the only undefeated team. Game Notes.... o o
Kicking Themselves – Only 1 TD a piece in this game – it was all about the kickers. Rob Bironas almost lost it for the Titans, but he was their saviour in overtime, striking the game winning 41yd field goal. Double Trouble – The Packers rolled up more yards against the Titans than any offense had this season by a wide margin, but they were undone by two turnovers.
Arizona Cardinals (5‐3) 34 St. Louis Rams (2‐6) 13 The Cardinals are top of their division...I know...WOW! The Rams have found a new lease of life and are no longer the worst team in the NFL...WOW! Who wowed the crowds at the Edward Jones Dome? Tim Hightower made it 7‐0 before his TD was overturned, Kurt Warner tried the QB sneak...and turned the ball over! Marc Bulger made no such mistake, he threw the ball...and what a throw...80yds down the field to Derek Stanley for the TD. Marc Bulger isn’t perfect...he threw a pick to Antoine Rolle; Rolle took it 40yds for the TD to tie the game. Neil Rackers then added a 36yd field goal and the Cardinal score 10 unanswered points. Tim Hightower finally got his first TD of the day – skimming in from 30yds out...17 unanswered points! Kurt Warner ended the half by going deep to Jerheme Urban for a 56yd TD...24 unanswered points. The Cardinals up 24‐7 at halftime after a 24‐0 second quarter scoring run by the Cardinals. In the third quarter, things were much the same – Kurt Warner went left to Anquan Boldin from 7yds out – 31 unanswered points. Bulger finally saved some face by hitting Torry Holt (remember him?) from 3yds out. They tried for two points but it failed. Neil Rackers hit his final field goal from 30yds out to finish the scoring – the game was out of reach when Bulger was intercepted by Roderick Hood. The Cardinals stay on top thanks to their total dominance in this game. Game Notes.... o o
Anquan Boldin– Anquan Boldin caught career reception Number 450, becoming the fastest player in NFL history to reach that mark Run Fun – Rookie running back Tim Hightower rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown in the first start of his NFL career. The Cardinals gained 177 yards on the ground. They came into the game with the league's 29th‐ranked rushing offense.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6‐3) 30 Kansas City Chiefs (1‐7) 27 The Herminator takes on Chuckie...Bucs look good...Chiefs don’t. That doesn’t mean we weren’t in for a great game though! Tyler Thigpen is becoming a regular name at QB for Kansas – He hit Dwayne Bowe from 7yds out for the early touchdown. After Earnest Graham fumbled the ball away, Kolby Smith powered up the middle from 1yd out for a 14 point lead. It was the second quarter before the Bucs got on the board; Matt Bryant nailed a field goal from 25yds out. It’s time to go w‐w‐w‐wiiildcat! Tyler Thigpen lines up at wide receiver and Mike Bradley the usual WR, throws it over the entire Bucs defence to a wide open Tyler Thigpen in the end zone for the TD – 37yd pass. Connor Barth nailed a field goal for the Chiefs to give them a 24‐3 lead, but on Bath’s next kickoff...Clifton Smith took the ball 97yds to the House and the Bucs are right back in it. It was left to Matt Bryant to finish off the first half scoring with a 43yd field goal – the Chiefs were up 24‐13 at halftime. After a scoreless third quarter the Bucs had possession but Clifton Smith winds up fumbling the ball away...the Chiefs have it, and fumble it away – this set up Jeff Garcia with a pass to Earnest Graham...Who then passed it to Alex Smith in the end zone on the HB pass – 3yd TD. The following 2 point attempt failed. Barth followed the drive by hitting a 28yd field goal to give the Chiefs a 9 point lead, but they didn’t expect Garcia to go deep to Antonio Bryant for a 24yd TD and a successful two point attempt to tie the game up. It took overtime to decide this one and the Bucs won the toss...they took only one drive to get in to Matt Bryant field goal range – his 34yd field goal was on‐line, 34yds out and the Bucs comeback to win in overtime. Game Notes.... o o
Wildcat – The Chiefs are now the fourth team in the NFL to employ the Wildcat offense (or some deviation of it) Point of no return– Clifton Smith’s 97yd Kickoff return was only the second kickoff TD in Buccaneers history!
Miami Dolphins (4‐4) 26 Denver Broncos (4‐4) 17 Well we’re all certainly surprised at Miami ‐ An organisation that was (1‐15) last year; they’ve already won three games this season and are looking very much improved since last year. The Bronco’s are another team that started off promisingly and are slipping slightly – Jay Cutler still has lots to give...but could he give the Broncos a win today? Dan Carpenter turned the Dolphins first possession into points; he struck a field goal from 45yds out. He also turned their second possession into three points – this time from 47yds out. Jay Cutler w3as looking for Brandon Marshall again – unfortunately he found Will Allen, who took it 32yds back to the Miami locker room! Jay Cutler finally found his feet, he hit rookie receiver Eddie Royal from 2yds out to bring the Broncos back in it. It was left up to Dan Carpenter to end the half – he struck a 23yd field goal to give the Dolphins a 16‐7 lead going into halftime. The third quarter kicked off with a 50yd Matt Prater field goal to bring the Bronco’s within a TD – The next scores came in the fourth quarter and it was a 41yd Dan Carpenter field goal to open the gap back up. Never count the Broncos out – Jay Cutler arose and tossed a TD to Peyton Hillis from 1yd out – Bronco’s come within 2 points. Anyone remember Ronnie Brown? Well it was Brown who dealt the killer blow – ending a long drive with a 2yd TD run to put the game out of the Bronco’s reach – The dolphins advance to 4‐4 and the Bronco’s slip to...4‐4! Game Notes.... o o
Camarillo...Love that name!– Dolphins receiver Greg Camarillo had a season‐high 11 receptions for 111 yards, primarily working against Karl Paymah, who filled in for injured starter Champ Bailey. Start Winning – The Broncos have lost four of their last five games!
Dallas Cowboys (5‐4) 14 New York Giants (7‐1) 35 I read a very interesting story this week, “Dallas Cowboys in Meltdown” Can this be true? Well without Tony Romo, the Cowboys are a completely different team – they lack confidence in Brad Johnson, Romo’s replacement. The good news is that he’s back in a few weeks and they can get back to winning form – let’s see how they did against the current Superbowl champs. Well the champs were off to a championship start – Eli Manning hit Kevin Boss from 13yds out for the early lead. Manning then went back the other side this time, hitting Steve Smith from 5yds out. Manning wasn’t perfect all day though – he tried to squeeze a pass to Plaxico Burress but it was picked by Mike Jenkins, he took it 23yds back to the house. After Brad Johnson was picked by Corey Webster, Eli Manning hit Amani Toomer from 11yds out to give the Giants a 21‐7 lead at halftime. After halftime it was the Cowboys defence who had to suffer the powerhouse that is Brandon Jacob’s carrying the ball – he ran in from 12yds out to extend the Giants lead. After Eli Manning fumbled the ball away and Brookes Bollinger stepped in at QB for the Cowboys, The Champagne QB hit Terrell Owens from 8yds out to narrow the lead to 2 TD’s. Derrick Ward stepped in at HB for the Giants and the Cowboys weren’t prepared for the change that Ward offers from Jacobs – he uses his speed much more than Jacobs and it was the speed that led him to a 17yd TD to end the game. The Giants dominated the Cowboys and never let up – They are now 7‐1 and the Cowboys are starting to lose it! Game Notes.... o
FUMBLE...– New York's 12‐game streak without losing a fumble ended when Manning fumbled in the second quarter.
Atlanta Falcons (5‐3) 24 Oakland Raiders (2‐6) 0 You very rarely see a shut‐out in the NFL anymore – most teams will at least get one field goal to avoid such embarrassment, but the Falcons did nothing but embarrass the Raiders this week – 24‐0 the final score, the Falcons dominant on both offense and defence. Here come the scores then...all Falcons of course! Matt Ryan started the game as he usually does...fast and furious! He turned the Falcons first drive into 7 points by hitting Michael Jenkins from 37yds out for the opening TD. Next it was Jerious Norwood’s turn for a score – 12yds out, his speed was too much for the Raiders – his 12yd run put the falcons up by two scores. It was the second quarter when Matt Ryan went to Michael Jenkins again – another 27yd TD. Jason Elam finished off the scoring in the second quarter – a 48yd field goal was on‐line. There was no competition or close calls – just bad play by the Raiders. They will continue to struggle – the team has no faith or respect for new head coach Tom Cable. Game Notes.... o o o
The Predator– Falcons DE John Abraham recorded three sacks for the second time this year, bringing his season total to 10 Snapped – Oakland has been held under 20 points in five straight games Game time ‐ The Falcons scored on their first four drives, while the Raiders recorded four three‐and‐outs and minus‐2 yards of total offense in the first half
Philadelphia Eagles (5‐3) 26 Seattle Seahawks (2‐6) 7 Very definitely still playoff contenders – The Eagles are operating within such a tough division, but they are holding their own and are still on target for at least a wildcard. Behind Donovan Mcnabb’s increasingly impressive arm and Brian Westbrook’s sheer quality – they look good! Seattle is struggling – Seneca Wallace is not a typical West Coast passer – he doesn’t have the mobility that Hasslebeck does and that appears to be the problem. How would they fair against each other? Surprisingly it was Seneca Wallace who opened up the scoring, he hit Koren Robinson from 90yds deep to electrify his team! It took until the second quarter for the eagles to respond – Donovan McNabb hit “Down‐ Town” Reggie Brown from 7yds out to tie the game. The eagles took the lead when McNabb went to the eligible tackle Todd Herremans in the end zone for the TD. David Akers kicked off the second half scoring – nailing a 39yd field goal, the first of the day. Akers also finished the third quarter scoring; his 24yd field goal put the Eagles up by 20‐7. Akers had his kicking boots on and the fourth quarter was his time to shine – He hit a 42yd and a 39yd attempt for his fourth FG of the day, and leads the Eagles to a comfortable win in sunny Seattle. Game Notes.... o o
Top 10 – The Eagles are one of four teams to rank in the top‐10 in both total offense and total defence this season McNabb Gets better and better – After a shaky first quarter in which he fumbled out of bounds and threw an interception, Donovan McNabb threw just one incompletion in the Eagles' next four scoring drives
New England Patriots (5‐3) 15 Indianapolis Colts (4‐4) 18 This was a re‐match 2007’s AFC championship game and this should have featured the two best QB’s in the NFL – only one was present! Two fast scoring offenses, very similar in ethos and strategy – but could Matt Cassell rise to the occasion and prove he can go toe to toe with Peyton? It was the “great Peyt”...on Manning who hit Anthony Gonzalez for the opening score – shortly followed by a 29yd Steve Gostkowski Field goal – Colts up 7‐3 at the end of the first quarter. Gostkowski hit another in the second, this one from 35yds out – Colts up 7‐6 going into halftime. Laurence Maroney is out, Sammy Morris is out – BenJarvus Green‐Ellis is in – he got into the end zone from 6yds out – the following two point attempt was no good. Peyton Manning went back to where he started – Anthony Gonzalez catches touchdown number 2 – 9yds out, followed by a two point catch by Reggie Wayne. Gostkowski added another 3 points from 25yds out, and then came a frightening 52yd field goal by a man who has missed his last 10, 50+yd field goal attempts! – Adam Vinatieri nails it though and that’s the best the Pats could manage. It was over when Bob Sanders intercepted Cassel with a few ticks left on the clock – the Colts get a much needed win. Game Notes.... o
o
A little piece of history! – With seven catches, Wes Welker joined former Jaguars WR Jimmy Smith as the only players in NFL history to have at least six receptions in their team's first seven games of the season. Colt Shot – The Colts have not lost three consecutive regular season games since 2002!
Pittsburgh Steelers (6‐2) 23 Washington Redskins (6‐3) 6 Its Monday Night football and it was the Steel Curtain which was drawn in Washington – Historic FedEx field was the location for the curtain call, an interception‐less Redskins team were the opponent – who came out on top, and who came apart? Shaun Suisham got the first two scores of the game – 44yd and 43yd field goals gave the Skins a 6 point start. Second quarter now and Jeff Reed cut the deficit with a 35yd field goal. After Plackemeier had a punt blocked, Big Ben Roethlisberger turned the opportunity into big points – he used the QB sneak and took the ball in himself from 1yd out. Jason Campbell was sacked to end the half – Steelers up 10‐6. The Steelers came back with a run game...Hey! Didn’t you used to be Willie Parker? Yes he’s back – he ran in from 1yd out to extend the Steelers lead – Jeff Reed missed the extra point. After Big Ben was injured – Byron Leftwich stepped in and drilled Santonio Holmes in the end zone from 5yds out for the finishing TD. Jason Campbell thought he’d had another TD but the Steelers challenged the call and it was overturned – The game finished with Campbell’s second pick of the season and his second of the game! The Steelers defence dominated the Redskins, preventing any TD’s and taking away the Skins previously NFL leading, run game. Game Notes.... o o
Couldn’t Last Forever! – The Steelers picked off Jason Campbell twice. Campbell had not been intercepted in his first eight games this season. Linebackers win games – While Leftwich's contribution is not to be understated, this game was won by the Steelers' defence, specifically their Linebacking corps. James Farrior, James Harrison, Lawrence Timmons and LaMarr Woodley combined for 23 solo tackles and five sacks.
