WEEK 7
NFL GAME REVIEWS
San Diego Chargers 14 Buffalo Bills 23 This was the last game of practise that San Diego has before their big game at Wembley next week – we all hope they’ll be in top form! The game didn’t start so well though – they went behind to the Bills early after a 38yd Ryan Lindell field goal. Never underestimate Phillip Rivers though – he did, of course, bounce back – hitting Malcom Floyd from 14yds out for the TD and the lead. After Rivers was sacked early in the second quarter, Trent Edwards got the Bills into gear, hitting go‐to‐guy, Lee Evans in the corner of the end zone. Lindell finished the half with a 27yd field goal and the half ended with the Bills up 13‐7. Vincent Jackson is almost exactly the opposite of “Little” Lee Evans – he’s big, tall at 6ft 5, but they both caught a TD today, Jackson caught a 12yd pass from Rivers to kick off the third quarter. It’s all been about passing so far – until Marshawn Lynch saw a hole – he ran 9yds around the right end for the Bills second TD. The fourth quarter was a quiet one – the Bills couldn’t extend their lead and put the game away....until Rivers was intercepted by Kawika Mitchell, and the bills converted it into 3 points to make it a two score game – the Chargers had one last attempt but Rivers fumbled the ball away, after a hit from...guess who – Kawika Mitchell. The Bills recovered and ran out the clock. The Bills beat the Chargers 24‐13 and Kawika Mitchell is now the most hated man in all of California! Game Notes....

Power Problems– The game was delayed by 15 minutes due to some balloons trailing into power cables outside the Stadium. Referees had to keep time manually, this led to several delay of game penalties! Welcome Back Trent! – Trent Edwards came back after a concussion in week 5 – he had a good game, finishing 25 of 30 for 261yds and 1 TD.
New Orleans Saints 7 Carolina Panthers 30 There’s no secret to it, the NFC South is turning into one of the toughest and most competitive divisions in the NFL, and this is the key matchup of the two real powerhouse teams. John Kasay gave the Panthers the early lead, his 39yd field goal was the only score of the first quarter. Mike Karney opened up the New Orleans scoring on the very first play of the second quarter, he ran in from 1yd out. Jonathan “The Daily Show” Stewart responded for Carolina, 18yds out – and the rookies’ year is looking good! It was Kasay who ended the half with a 48yd attempt; he gave the Panthers a 13‐7 lead going into halftime. Remember Steve Smith? Well Jake Delhomme did – He opened up the third quarter by hitting Smith from 39yds deep. Drew Brees tried drilling Marques Colston...Ken Lucas had other ideas – his interception set up Delhomme’s TD to DeAngelo Williams. The Saints couldn’t get anything going and Kasay finished the day with a 28yd field goal – we later realised that Sean Peyton left his best, most exciting playbook next to his passport. Game Notes.... o o
Bush Out – We were all extremely disappointed that the most exciting player in the NFL will not be playing in London, he was injured his knee towards the end of the first quarter and is now out for 3‐4 weeks – he will be missed. Fourth Down Control – The real reason the Saints never got within striking distance? ...Try two failed fourth downs!
Minnesota Vikings 41 Chicago Bears 48 How can you score 41 points...and still lose? Well the Vikings managed it this weekend, in a game which totalled 89 points. Two evenly matched teams with two star running backs. Adrian Peterson opened up the scoring for the Vikings, a 1yd run capped off a strong opening drive. Kyle Orton was quick to respond though; he hit Greg Olsen from 18yds out to tie things up. The Vikings have had special teams’ problems before, but you know something’s wrong when Chris Kluwe dropped the long snap – it was picked up by Garrett Wolfe, who took it to the house. Frerotte responded for the Vikings, he drilled Visanthe Shiancoe in the end zone for a 24yd, game tying TD. After a quarter dominated by TD’s the kickers got their legs going in the second – Robbie Gould hit a field goal from 26yds out, then Ryan Longwell evened it back up from 42yds out. Did I say the Vikings had special teams’ problems? Well after a Brad Maynard punt, Charles Gordon decided to block a Bear – the ball touched him – it’s therefore live – the Bears recover in the End zone for another special teams TD. After Frerotte was intercepted on his next drive and Robbie Gould missed a field goal on the Bears – Chester Taylor capped off a short drive with a rushing TD from 1 yd out. Gould finished off the half by hitting a 48yd attempt – the Bears were up 27‐24. It was Kyle Orton who opened up the third quarter scoring – he hit Desmond Clarke from 35yds out...he fumbled it on the goal line but it was recovered by Rashied Davis, he’ll get the TD. Adrian Peterson still can run you know – he busted out a 54yd TD on the Vikings next possession, bringing the Vikings within 3. Frerotte was intercepted on the next drive, Kyle Orton fumbled the ball away immediately after – but he later hit Marty Booker from 51yds out, Bears extend their lead. Frerotte was intercepted for a third time at the end of the third; Matt Forte made him pay when he ran in from 1yd out for his first TD of the day. Longwell added a 23yd field goal to the Vikings score, quickly followed by a Frerotte – Bernard Berrian hook up from 5yds out to bring the Vikings within 7. The game was over when Frerotte threw his fourth pick of the day – this one to Zach Bowman – and that’s how it ended – Bears win 48‐41...That’s how you lose a game with 41 points – behind 4 interceptions! Game Notes.... o o
Special – The Vikings were poor on special teams – giving up two TD’s on opposite ends of the punt. They have allowed 5 TD’s on special teams so far this year. Peterson Power, Adrian Peterson surpassed the 2,000 career rushing mark today – he is now the fastest player in NFL history to achieve that feat.
Pittsburgh Steelers 38 Cincinnati Bengals 10 Can you believe that the Bengals haven’t won a game yet? Palmer, T.J, Ocho Cinco? And still nothing! The Steers on the other hand are back to old form – they’re 4‐1 and rolling again. They got rolling quickly in this one – After a 32yd throw to Santonio Holmes, Big Ben Roethlisberger hit Willie Parker’s replacement, Mewelde Moore from 2yds out for the opening score. Jeff Reed added a field goal from 2yds out and the Bengals were showing us their 0‐6 explanations. Ryan Fitzpatrick is now at the helm in Cinci, and he hit Calvin Johnson from 5yds out for the TD, late in the second quarter – the Steelers were up 10‐7 at the half. Mewelde Moore gave the Bengals a lesson is tackle breaking, he ran down the sideline for a 24yd gain, and then capped it off with a 13yd rushing TD. Dave Rayner added his first field goal of the game for the Bengals, 26yds out – it brought the Bengals within 7. It was the fourth quarter before the Steelers decided to dominate – three TD’s in one quarter, here they are...Ben Roethlisberger went deep down the field to Nate Washington for a 50yd bomb, Mewelde Moore around the right end for a 2yd rushing TD, and the game ended when Big Ben left and Byron Leftwich hit Hines Ward from 16yds out, the Steelers get 21 points in 15 minutes and go on to win 38‐10. Game Notes.... o o
Hit The Deck – The Steelers were mauling the Bengals offensive line, they sacked Fitzpatrick 7 times. Uh Oh and 7– The Bengals were last 0‐7 in 2002. Seems they’re not functioning properly without Carson Palmer.
Tenessee Titans 34 Kansas City Chiefs 10 Tennessee is the NFL’s only unbeaten team – they have impressed everyone and are looking extremely positive under replacement quarterback Kerry Collins. Their defence is looking impressive and we should all take note of an emerging star in those ranks...CB Coretland Finnegan – solid probowl pick for sure. Back to the game now and it was Tennessee kicker Rob Bironas who got the game moving – he was on‐line from 49yds out for the first score. After Collins hit Alge Crumpler for a 28yd gain, Lendale White quickly opened up a 10 point Titans lead, he rumbled in from 6yds out. The second quarter began with Nick Novack missing the chance to get Kansas on the board, in fact we had to wait until the end of the half for another score – unfortunately for the Chiefs it was Lendale White again – he ran in from 2yds out for his second TD of the game and gave the Titans a 17‐0 lead at halftime. (After Nick Novack missed another field goal in the closing seconds) The third quarter’s only score was yielded by Rob Bironas’ leg – 46yds out – he shows Novack that “you’ve got to hit it between the uprights!” We’ve seen Lendale White’s ability to finish off drives from 2 and 6yds out – try 80yds out! He busted through the Chiefs secondary and no‐one could catch him, the longest run of his career! Nick Novack finally ended the Chiefs shut out; he hit his first field goal from 26yds out. Chris Johnson was having a great game; he put the cherry on top when he ran the ball 66yds from scrimmage for a well deserved touchdown. Tyler Thigpen was in at QB for Kansas and he made himself useful by scrambling in from 14yds out. The game ended 34‐10 to the Titans – they remain unbeaten, whist the Chiefs lost Damon Huard and Brodie Croyle to injury. Game Notes....
o
Rookie Magic – Chris Johnson is having a stunning rookie year, and today was no exception. He had 168yds rushing and a 66yd TD run. Lendale white also had 149yds carrying and 3 rushing TD’s – an amazingly good day for this great rushing offense.
o
Run Thigpen! – In a complete contrast to the two amazing rushing games had by White and Johnson – the Chiefs leading rusher was...that’s right – QB Tyler Thigpen – he had 21yds rushing and 1 TD! The Titans gained 332 yards rushing, while holding Kansas to only 58.
Baltimore Ravens 27 Miami Dolphins 13 Baltimore’s defence has been returning to superior ways, and boy do they need it – on a team that’s training rookie QB Joe Flacco, the defence needs to be solid. It was a real test for the Ravens defence though – they come up against the “Wildcats” and their tricky offensive sets. After Ted Ginn muffed the kickoff, the Dolphins managed to drive the ball down the field for a 21yd Dan Carpenter field goal. Matt Stover squared things up at the end of the first quarter, hitting a 47yd attempt. The second quarter saw Chad Pennington intercepted by Terrell Suggs – he took it 44yds back to the house. Carpenter drew the Fins to within a TD thanks to a 26yd field goal, But Flacco hit Derrick Mason right on the money – 11yd TD and the ravens were up 17‐6 at halftime. Matt Stover opened up the second half with a 28yd field goal, but Pennington came out of the tunnel fired up – he struck Davone Bess in the end zone from 7yds out to close the gap. The Fins kept fighting in the fourth but couldn’t manage to keep a drive going long enough – it was left up to Willis McGahee to get the Ravens final TD of the day – he ran in from 5yds out to seal the game. Ravens win 27‐13. Game Notes.... o o
Payback– The Dolphins only victory last season came against the Ravens, this was with current Ravens offensive co‐ordinator Cam Cameron as head coach. Stuffed – The Ravens defence is the ultimate run stopper – they have not allowed a 100+yd individual rusher in 25 games.
San Fransisco 49’ers 17 New York Giants 29 The current Superbowl champions are doing well – better than can be expected after such drastic reductions in starters from last year. The 49’ers are now under the management of Mike Singletary after Mike Nolan was fired this week. Fortunately for the giants, they still have the powerhouse that is Brandon Jacobs – he’s shaping up to be quite an effective back and he opened up the scoring today, with a 26yd touchdown. Joe Nedney hit a 40yd field goal to finish the first quarter. Brandon Jacobs sure can carry the load – he ran in once again, this time from 2yds out. J.T. O’Sullivan arose in the second quarter and he hit Josh Morgan from 30yds out to bring the 49’ers within 4. It was towards the end of the half that O’Sullivan was picked, and it set up John Karney from 21yds out to put the Giants up 17‐10 at halftime. The Second half opened much the same way the first half ended – O’Sullivan fumbled the ball away and set up Eli Manning to connect with his go‐to‐guy, Plaxico Burress, the 6yd TD gave the Giants a 2 score lead. Karney was about to make the lead 17 points, right up until the point his kick was blocked and recovered by Nate Clements – he managed to take it 74yds for the TD. By the fourth quarter the game was still on the table – Karney managed to hit his next attempt from 48yds out to give the Giants a bigger edge, it was finally over when O’Sullivan was sacked and fumbled the ball away – it counted as a safety for the Giants – the final score was 29‐17 Giants and they keep rolling on! Game Notes.... o o
Ball Control– J.T. O’Sullivan had four fumbled on the day – he’s now had 9 on the season – the league high. Tuck and Run – Justin Tuck had a monstrous day for the Giants – he recorded 2 sacks, 3 tackles and 2 forced fumbles.
Dallas Cowboys 14 St. Louis Rams 34 The hardest thing to do in a football game is to play form behind...being down on the scoreboard means the opponent can control the clock and more accurately predict your plays – so don’t ever go down early! The Cowboys were without Romo today – it was left to Brad Johnson to lead the offense. The Cowboys opened up the scoring – their classic red zone play – sending Marion Barber up the middle for a 1yd TD and the early lead. Marc Bulger was back on form today – he hit Donnie Avery deep down the field – 42yds and the game was level. After Brad Johnson fumbled the ball away, Steven Jackson went 8yds straight down the middle for the Rams lead – when Johnson threw a pick on the next possession, Jackson did the same again – this time from 1yd out. Josh Brown missed a field goal at the start of the second quarter, but he ended it by hitting a 48yd attempt – the only score of the quarter. The second half was all about Steven Jackson – he found a hole and burnt the defence for a 56yd TD and an increasing Rams lead. Brown added another field goal from 35yds out to start the fourth, and midway though Brad Johnson threw his third pick of the day – the Rams couldn’t capitalise and Johnson finally struck back with his only TD of the day, he went deep to Martellus Bennett from 34yds deep. It was too late – the Rams kneeled out the clock and the Cowboys are looking worried – could they be the Patriots without Brady? Game Notes.... o o
Uh oh... – This Cowboys have lost 3 of their past 4 games! The point of no return– It was Steven Jacksons 3 TD’s which won the Rams the game – it was his 56yd TD run late in the third that put the game out of reach for the Rams.
Detroit Lions 21 Houston Texans 28 0‐6 Lions – the joint worst team in the league (with the Bengals), Ironic that they both have some of the best individual players in the game. They need to work better as a team – could they pull it off in Houston? Matt Schaub tried his best to stop that happening – he hit Owen Daniels from 2yds out for the opening score, then Ahmad Green added another 7 points from 1yd out. Steve Slaton has been a bit hit and miss this year – some games he’s stunning and some games he’s average – he managed to cap off a successful drive with a 1yd TD run – Houston has a 21 point lead. Jason Hanson got the Lions on the board late in the second quarter; he hit a 54yd field goal to end the half. Kevin Smith is the latest HB in Detroit and he ran 26yds around the right corner for the Lions first TD. Schaub opened up the second half Texans, much the same as the first – he hit Owen Daniels for their second TD tandem of the game. The Lions still had some gas left in the tank...Dan Orlovsky was backed up in his end zone, but he had one sure fire outlet...Calvin Johnson...Johnson took the ball the entire length of the field 96yds for the TD. After a 2 point attempt taken away by a penalty – the Lions hit it on their second try, the score was 28‐18 to the Texans. Hanson brought the Lions to within a TD when he hit a 54yd field goal and the Lions did get the ball back...10 seconds left they tried lateralling the ball – unfortunately Orlovsky couldn’t catch it and the Texans go on to win 28‐21 and the Lions still have not won a game. Game Notes.... o o
Time Of Possession– How can you expect to win your first game of the season is your offense only has the ball for 20 minutes – the Texans were on offense for 40 minutes and dominated the ball game. He Remembers Andre – Andre Johnson had 141 receiving yards – he’s had more than 100yds in the past 3 games!
Indianapolis Colts 14 Greenbay Packers 34 I read a very interesting story this week, it said “no columnist can write an article on the Packers without mentioning a certain ex‐quarterback” – well I think I can manage it! Mason Crosby opened up the scoring at Lambeau Field, 31yd field goal – his first of the day. With Joseph Addai out it was left up to Dominick Rhodes to run up the middle from 3yds out to give the Colts the lead. The new QB on the block – Aaron Rodgers, he hit Donald Lee from 12yds out to open up the second quarter and then Ryan Grant got a rare 11yd rushing TD to give the Pack a 10 point lead at halftime. Peyton Manning came out of the locker room ready for business...unfortunately so did Nick Collins – the savvy CB picked off Manning and took it to the house – 62yds and the Packers lead was growing. Adam Vinatieri had a field goal attempt blocked and this set up Mason Crosby for an attempt the other way – he didn’t miss – the Packers were up 27‐7. Manning was determined to get a passing TD today...Aaron Rouse was also determined to take the ball 99yds when Manning threw it right to him – he took it all the way down the field – the Packers were up by 27 points. Dominick Rhodes ended the game with a 1yd TD and the Packers hold the Colts to 14 points – Aaron Rodgers played well and the whole of Lambeau field had forgotten Brett Favre...damn! Game Notes.... o o
Penalties Kill...– Tony Dungy managed to put out a team which racked up 12 penalties for 110yds – that’s the highest number of Penalties Dungy has ever seen. Take Away – Look what happens to the Colts when Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne have only 4 catches between them!
New York Jets 13 Oakland Raiders 16 This game was all about closure – it wasn’t high scoring – but it was tension towards the end that made it memorable. The game started slowly in the first half – the only scores took place during a field goal exchange in the first quarter – Jay Feely hit one from 40yds out, followed by Sebastian Janikowski nailing his attempt from 29yds out. The second half opened up with an 8yd pass from Jamarcus Russell to Javon Walker for the first TD of the game. Leon Washington responded for the Jets in the fourth quarter, he ran 11yds up the middle for the game tying TD. Janikowski and Feely had another field goal exchange to end the game – Janikowski hit his from 37yds out and, with 8 seconds left, Jay Feely tied the game up. It went to overtime now and for 12 minutes neither team could get into comfortable field goal range – the Raiders decided to go for it from 57yds out – the best chance they could get, with the Kicker with the biggest leg in the NFL...Janikowski was on‐ line from 57yds and the Raiders beat the Jets. Game Notes.... o o
Bastian...Bastian– Sebastian Janikowski hit the longest field goal ever in overtime – 57yds was one hell of a risk! Snap – Great news for Raiders fans...they snapped a 4 game, home losing streak today.
Cleveland Browns 11 Washington Redskins 14 The Redskins have the league’s leading rusher on their side – Clinton Portis is proving to be very dangerous this season. The Browns are led by a quarterback who doesn’t know when he’s going to be benched – two teams in very different situations. Let’s see what happened when the Dawg Pound...travelled via Fed Ex! Unbelievably there were no scores in the first half – there were no fumbles – there were no interceptions! Both teams were failing third downs and the Washington defence was pressuring Derek Anderson. The scoring did start after the half though – Clinton Portis was the key driving force behind the Skins offense, he found a way in from 3yds out for the lead. Phil Dawson cut the lead 5 minutes later; he hit a 37yd field goal for the Browns. Jason Campbell then hit Santana Moss from 18yds out – the Skins had woken up! The Browns got their first chance of the game when Clinton Portis fumbled the ball away – this set up Derek Anderson and Joshua Cribbs to connect for the 1yd TD, and a successful 2 point attempt cut the Skins lead to just 3. The Browns had a chance to tie the game for overtime with 32 second left – Phil Dawson from 54yds out – it was no good, wide right and the Skins hold off the Browns 14‐11. Game Notes.... o o
Hold On Jason! – Jason Campbell is STILL the only starting NFL quarterback this season who has not thrown an interception. The Reasons? – Clinton Portis had another stunning day running – he had 27 carries for 175yds and 1 TD – the key to his huge rushing yards was WR Santana Moss – he threw several Key Blocks to spring Portis forward.
Seattle Seahawks 10 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20 These teams are very similar in many ways – neither can find a solution at QB...neither have a solid staring RB...both are in tough divisions. Jeff Garcia was back at QB for the Bucs – he opened up in style, hitting Antonio Bryant deep down the field for a 47yd TD. Earnest Graham plundered up the middle from 1yd out – capping off a drive which included a 31yd pass from Garcia to Jeremy Stevens. Matt Bryant added three points before the half ended, although he could have added three more but the latter kick was just short from 47yds out – the Bucs were up 17‐0 at the half. After Mike Holmgren had stirred up the souls of the Seahawks at halftime, Orlando Mare quickly got them on the board; his 26yd field goal was the Hawks first score of the game. Matt Bryant kicked his second of the day early in the fourth quarter, a 27yd chip shot. The Seahawks were desperate for a TD – it finally came when Seneca Wallace hit John Carlson from 2yds out to end the game. The Bucs win 20‐10 and the Seahawks drop to 1‐5. Game Notes.... o o
Welcome Home! – The Bucs are 4‐0 at Raymond James Stadium this year – it’s also the site for this year’s Superbowl! You can’t win – 2 out of 10 third down conversions will not lead the Seahawks to a victory over the Bucs!
Denver Broncos 7 New England Patriots 41 Its Monday Night football and it was the Bronco’s turn to travel to Foxborough Massachusetts to face the Pats. Two coaches who respect each other greatly – Mike Shannahan and Bill Bellichuck are two of the best in the business. It didn’t start well for the Broncos, Jay Cutler injured his finger on the first play of the game – hitting it against the helmet of Vince Wilfork – he never truly recovered. Antoine Hall fumbled away the first possession of the game and this set up Steve Gostkowski from 31yds out for 3 points. It was Antoine Hall who fumbled away the next Bronco possession and this set up Gostkowski from 40yds out. When the Patriots do roll...they roll – Bill Bellichuck decided to go for it on 4th and 1 down near the goal line – it led to a 4yd Sammy Morris TD. Pats now up 13‐0. They extended that lead when Matt Cassel finally connected with star receiver Randy Moss in the back of the end zone for the TD – the only play where he wasn’t being covered by Champ Bailey. The half ended with Patrick Ramsey on at QB for Denver – Cutler was on the sideline getting treatment on his finger. Ramsey could manage nothing but to fumble the ball away. Matt Cassel started the third quarter just as he finished the second – he found Randy Moss again – 27yds out for a record setting TD (see below). Cassel then threw a career best, third TD pass – he found slot receiver Wes Welker from 6yds out – the Pats were up 34‐0. Jay Cutler was back now and he wasted little time in...Not so much getting the Broncos back on track, more...avoiding being shutout. He hit Daniel Graham from 10yds out for the Broncos first score of the game. The Pats ended the scoring with a 1yd TD by BenJarvus Green‐Ellis after humiliating the Broncos. Game Notes.... o o
Pass Protection! – Neither offensive line could protect their QB, The Broncos sacked Cassel 6 times – the Pats sacked Cutler 3 times. Great Randy! – Randy Moss caught his 129th career TD, putting him in 8th place all‐time.
