WEEK 13
NFL GAME REVIEWS
Tenessee Titans (11‐1) 47 Detroit Lions (0‐12) 10 HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE! Yes it’s the day to be thankful and we were all thankful to Jesse McCartney for his halftime performance during the battle between the NFC leader and NFL loser! The Titans are revelling after a loss to the Jets last week; meanwhile the Lions must now have lost to every NFL team you can think of. Could the Lions rally and win something? Well was there anybody shocked when Dante Culpepper’s first pass to Shaun McDonald was fumbled away...not really! Two plays later and Chris Johnson ran in from 6yds out for the 6 points. Jason Hanson got 3 points back for the Lions but Chris Johnson was proving to be too big a problem, he ran through the Lions DB’s like...a RB through the Lions defence – 58yds for the TD. It didn’t take long for Culpepper to make his next boob of the game, under pressure he tossed the ball up and it was picked by Dave Ball who took it 15yds to the house. 2nd quarter now and Lendale White is still around in Tennessee – 6yd TD run for him. Remember Lendale...well he did it again a few minutes later – 2yds out his second score of the day. It took a while but Dante Culpepper finally found d his man in the end zone (and it wasn’t Calvin Johnson!), he hit Michael Gaines from 2yds out to give the Lions only a 35‐10 deficit going into half time. Rob Bironas kicked off the third quarter and was the only scorer for the rest of the game! He scored 2 field goals in each quarter – His third quarter attempts were both good from 49 and 41yds out, his fourth quarter attempts, good from 45 and 43yds out. This game wasn’t ever really a contest, the Titans roll over the Lions who are still looking for that perfect season! Game Notes.... o o
The Lions Defence! – Titans QB Kerry Collins lost a fumble for the first time all season HE’S BACK? – Vince Young entered the game in the fourth quarter for his first game action since the season opener; He threw 1 pass, 1 completion for 54yds.
Seattle Seahawks (2‐10) 9 Dallas Cowboys (8‐4) 34 Who was the better performing artist for this halftime show? The Jonas Brother or...BIG ROB the rapper? Well Big Rob was supporting the Cowboys and...At home...Pretty difficult not to see them winning, but could the visiting Seahawks control Romo and T.O? Well not to start with at least...Romo was directing traffic and went deep to rookie TE Martellus Bennett from 16yds out for the TD. After Julius Jones fumbled the Seahawks ball away, Marion Barber mark 3 went in from 2yds out for a 14 point lead. Orlando Mare got the Seahawks rolling from 44yds out but they just weren’t covering the Cowboys TE’s – Romo went to Jason Witten from 7yds out and another TD. A field goal exchange ended the half – Nick Folk nailed his first of the day from 41yds out, followed by Orlando Mare striking his second of the day from 38yds out. It was 24‐6 at halftime. It was a swift welcome back after the halftime show and the Seahawks looked to be putting on a show with a 13 play drive, but it stalled and they settled for a 25yd Orlando Mare field goal. After a Romo pick he was determined to correct himself – what better way than hitting T.O Terrell Owens from 19yds out and another TD. Nick Folk got his second FG of the day to give the Cowboys a 34‐9 advantage. After Hasselbeck failed three passes into the end zone the game wound down and the Cowboys were thankful that Romo was back to form. Game Notes.... o o o
That’s why they call it the RED zone– The Cowboys were perfect in the red zone, converting on all four opportunities. The Seahawks were 0‐for‐3 in the red zone. Uh‐Oh! – Running back Marion Barber left the game in the third quarter to have x‐rays taken Times are Changing ‐ The Seahawks have 10 losses in a season for the first time since 2000.
Arizona Cardinals (7‐5) 20 Philadelphia Eagles (6‐5‐1) 48 The Piés De Résistance of our Thanksgiving matchups and the Cardinals few in to face the Eagles in a battle of the birds (hilarious on thanksgiving!) Even funnier was that it was a battle in the air that won the game! It didn’t take McNabb long to hit his main man Brian Westbrook from 5yds out for the early lead. After Kurt Warner was picked by Jason Hanson, it was Westbrook carrying the load on his own – 1yd out and the double digit lead. Warner was picked again on his next drive, this time by Quintin Mikell – it was McNabb who struck yet again – 2yds out he hits...guess who...Brian Westbrook from 2yds out. Warner finally got things going mid‐way through the second quarter; he hit one of his two star receivers – Larry Fitzgerald, 1yd out and the TD. David Akers ended the half with a 42yd field goal. The Eagles took a 24‐7 lead into halftime. Third quarter now and it was apparent that Brian Westbrook’s legs are still working FINE! His third TD of the day came from a 9yd run. Warner is striking back – he went to high quality rookie receiver Sean Breaston from 6yds out, the ensuing two point attempt failed. David Akers tacked on another 3 points to the Eagles lead. 4th quarter now and Kurt Warner went back to star receiver number 11, Larry Fitzgerald from 7yds out to close the gap to 14 points. Star receiver number 81 Anquan Boldin fumbled the ball away; McNabb was back with his sights set on rookie DeShaun Jackson in the end zone – 5yd TD. McNabb finished off the day’s scoring with his fourth TD pass of the day, this one to Jason Avant from 8yds out. The game was all over (at halftime!) when Brian Dawkins intercepted Warner – the final score was 48‐20 and the Eagles get a surprise win over the Cardinals and neither team are out of the playoff hunt yet... Game Notes.... o o o
32 First Downs! – The Eagles converted on 9 of 13 third down tries and picked up a total of 32 first downs (the Cardinals only managed 12). Turkey... ‐ The Eagles are 5‐0 on Thanksgiving, while the Cardinals are 6‐15‐2; The Cardinals have lost eight consecutive Turkey Day games. The West/East divide ‐ The Cardinals have not won on the East Coast since November 7, 2004 (at Miami); West Coast teams playing on the East Coast this season are 0‐15.
San Fransisco 49’ers (4‐8) 10 Buffalo Bills (6‐6) 3 Not a high scorer...not an easy game to predict either! Mike Singletary has really turned this team around in San Francisco, until he came along this game was over before it began. The Bills have not been playing very well at all – WAY to many turnovers! Let’s see who could hold on for the victory...watch carefully – it’s gonna go fast! Shaun Hill capped off a 14 play drive with a 12yd pass to Isaac Bruce for the opening score. Ryan Lindell missed a 20yds field goal to open the second quarter – the only score of the quarter came thanks to a Joe Nedney field goal from 50yds out. Lindell struck another field goal from 22yds out to open the second half scoring...AND END IT! That was it for the game and all that was left was a couple of turnovers and that was that...The 49’ers win the “Thanksgiving Giblet game.” Game Notes.... o o o
You got to score! – The Bills failed to capitalize on four trips inside the red zone. Losman/Edwards – Losman started the second half for the Bills due to a groin injury sustained by starter Trent Edwards. Losman finished 11‐of‐17 with 93 yards Key Win...or delaying the inevitable? ‐ San Francisco's win prevented the Arizona Cardinals from clinching the NFC West
Baltimore Ravens (8‐4) 34 Cincinnati Bengals (1‐10‐1) 3 The NFL has made it official...any personal records broken this season, against the Bengals will not count because of the apparent lack of defence – I wonder which lucky sports columnist would get the job of writing that article! Let’s see who broke their records today...Well it does read like a list of Ravens plays but trust me...The Bengals did get one tiny little score – Let’s play Where’s Wally with the Bengals score. Matt Stover kicked all of the first quarter’s points – a 27yd field goal! He also kicked off the second quarter scoring with a 21yd field goal. Rookie QB Joe Flacco came to his senses when he went to TE Todd Heap from 4yds out for his first passing TD of the day. Shane Graham got the Bengals on the board before halftime – 21yd field goal (YOU JUST FOUND WALLY!) Third quarter now and Mark Clayton took the ball on the end around and he’s a very good passer...he proved it when he hit Derrick Mason from 32yds out and the TD – Clayton went 1 from 1 for 32yds and a TD! Wacco Flacco decided to pass the ball to Clayton this time, only a 70yd pass to break Clayton’s receiving record but remember...IT DOESN'T COUNT!! Jordan Palmer was on for the Bengals and he...threw a pick to Jim Leonhard, he took it 35yds to the house. That was the game and the Ravens stay in the playoff hunt with an 8‐4 record. Interesting that Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan both have 8‐4 records...and they’re both Rookies! Game Notes.... o o o o
That’s why they’re the best! – Against the NFL's second‐ranked defense, the Bengals only managed six first downs and were forced to punt 11 times, tying a franchise record The NFL Travellers – This was the Ravens' sixth road game in eight weeks No Surprise ‐ The Bengals were eliminated from playoff contention before the game began. 6 out of 7 aren’t bad! ‐ The Ravens have won six of their last seven games
New Orleans Saints (6‐6) 20 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9‐3) 23 Classic NFC South matchup and in the toughest division in the NFL – the leaders took on the losers (last season you couldn’t imagine the Saints would be below the Falcons could you?) I think Jeff Garcia was photographed saying “Hey Chuckie – We’re goin’ to London!” Meanwhile he had a game to play and you could see he was excited about his international opportunity. The game started with a Jonathan Vilma forced fumble and that set up Garrett Hartley from 47yds out. After a couple of hug Jeff Garcia runs, (In case you’d forgotten...Jeff is 37 years old!) Matt Bryant capped it off with a 38yd field goal to tie the game. After Bryant added another 3 points for the Bucs, Drew Brees came online and hit his emerging star receiver, Lance Moore from 13yds out and the first TD of the game. After the halftime report, Cadillac Williams started hi engine for the first time in a while – 8yds out he got the tying TD. The Bucs took the lead when Jeff Garcia hit Antonio Bryant from 39yds out – that only took 2 plays! Brees was picked on the next drive but came back in the fourth quarter – Pierre Thomas took a short pass 20yds to the end zone – the game was within 3. Garrett Hartley got those three points for the Saints on a 43yd attempt so we were tied late in the fourth quarter. You can always depend on Matt...37yds out and the veteran kicker wins yet another game for the Bucs...surprising how on such a good team – the MVP should be Matt Bryant! Game Notes.... o o o
Game Planned against– The Saints were held to just 2.4 yards per rush and gained only 44 yards on the ground. That forced Brees to put the ball up 47 times in rainy conditions. He finished with 296 passing yards but tossed three interceptions. Clifton in Suspension... – Clifton Smith continued to make a difference for Tampa Bay in special teams, accounting for 158 return yards. FIGURE OUT THIS ONE – Reggie bush came back from injury...he had 3 carries for 0yds with a long of 8yds?????????
New York Giants (11‐1) 23 Washington Redskins (7‐5) 7 It was the classic...the definition of classic...battle between two NFC East teams, The Giants lead the division, and the Redskins are third. There was a great void in New York this week – Plaxico Burress was out with a self inflicted gunshot wound to his leg...one witness from the NYC Club where the incident occurred heard a popping sound and all of a sudden Plaxico was clutching his leg” Ouch Plax...couldn’t have picked a better time to go all Tony Montana around New York. Still...the Giants fight on without him – could they overcome adversity and beat their great divisional rivals? On the Giants first possession it took very little time for the Superbowl MVP to show what he’s made of, he went deep, deep down field to Amani Toomer from 40yds out for the TD. John Carney added three points from 31yds out to give the Giants a double digit lead going into quarter 2. After Carney added another 3 points and Campbell had an interception nullified by a penalty, Devin Thomas (who?) took the ball in from 29yds out for the TD. (I think he’s a substitute for Clinton Portis!)It was left up to Shaun Suisham to miss a 42yd field goal to end the half – Giants up 13‐7. Hey didn’t you used to be Brandon Jacobs!? Well the almighty Bulldog took the ball in from 1yd out – it’s got to be pretty slim odds of stopping Jacobs from 1yds out hasn’t it!? After Aaron Ross picked of Campbell, it was left up to John Carney to end the game with a 39yd field goal, his third of the day. Game Notes.... o o o
8.2 Yards of Pure Charm– The Giants averaged 8.2 yards per pass play and had several long gains that flipped field position. Their first three scoring drives were propelled by pass plays measuring at least 20 yards. 4‐0 but no! – New York moved to 4‐0 in the NFC East and closer to clinching a division title He Who Dares...WON! ‐ The Redskins put eight and nine men in the box, daring Eli Manning to beat them, and Manning did just that. He had a career‐high 239 first‐half passing yards and set the tone with a perfect 40‐yard touchdown pass to Amani Toomer on the opening drive.
Miami Dolphins (7‐5) 16 St. Louis Rams (2‐10) 12 Beggars can’t be choosers...and who would choose to be the Rams right now. A very unclear future ahead for this team – likely to get a high draft pick – but very shady as to what they’re gonna do with it! The Dolphins however has a very clear future – bright stars – need to pick up a QB in the offseason (Possibly Matt Cassell) – coach likely to prosper, all is going well. This game was very unclear though – until you remember how the Rams tackle...Josh Brown capped off the Rams first 9 play possession with a 23yd field goal, thanks to two defensive pass interference penalties on the Dolphins. He then added another FG from 51yds out to double the lead. That lead was quickly erased when Ronnie Brown went straight up the gut for a 3yd TD and the Dolphins take the lead. The Rams had another long drive, but after 14 plays they had to settle for a field goal from 33yds out. Dan Carpenter returned the lead to the visitors when he struck his first field goal of the day – 37yds out. The second half was a field goal derby – Carpenter nailed a 47yds attempt for the Dolphins...then there was a Bulger interception, David Martin fumble...followed by a 38yd Josh Brown field goal! After Bulger was intercepted yet again, Dan Carpenter got the final score of the game – a 42yd field goal. Bulger threw his third pick of the game to end it – The Dolphins win on the road and now have a 7‐5 record. Game Notes.... o
o o
Dan Carpenter...Rookie of the year??? – Dolphins kicker Dan Carpenter set an NFL rookie record when he converted his 10th consecutive field goal, connecting on a 47‐yarder in the third quarter. Carpenter later added some insurance with a 42‐yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Possession is 9/10 of the law – The Miami defense recorded three interceptions, while Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington did not throw a pick. Hawaii Man ‐ Dolphins rookie receiver Davone Bess was overlooked coming out of Hawaii, and signed with Miami as an undrafted free agent. Bess made the second start of his career and led the Dolphins with six receptions for 84 yards.
Indianapolis Colts (8‐4) 10 Cleveland Browns (4‐8) 6 Coming to you from the Dawg Pound in Cleveland, the greatest show on turf...if you believe that you’ll believe anything! Check out the score line...not exactly an offensive masterpiece but the Colts just keep doing enough to win...and they did it again here. As you can see, the grim reaper had arrived for Romeo Crennel’s career – would this loss be another nail in the coffin or can he be forgiven for losing his top two QB’s? After Joseph Addai fumbled away the first run of the game, Jamal Lewis led the Dawgz on a 10 play drive which resulted in a 34yd Phil Dawson field goal. The Colts responded with a 12 play drive of their own – Adam Vinatieri got a 30yds field goal out of it. Phil Dawson got a field goal back from 25yds out and after a Peyton Manning fumble; followed by an Interception...it was halftime. Dawgz up 6‐3. The equally thrilling second half produced no score in the third quarter – just a Manning pick, Phil Dawson field goal miss and Adam Vinatieri field goal miss. The final score came in the fourth quarter, Derek Anderson was sacked by Dwight Freeney, and it was recovered by Robert Mathis, he took it 37yds for the TD. Big news of the day though was Derek Anderson out for the season with a broken bone – third string QB Ken Dorsey (Not Glen!) will be the QB for the rest of the season, he started his reign by throwing a pick to Antoine Bethea to end the game! Game Notes.... o
o o
Robert the Bruce! – Defensive end Robert Mathis recorded two of Indianapolis' three sacks, including one on Cleveland's final drive. But Mathis' biggest contribution came early in the fourth quarter when he recovered an Anderson fumble and returned it 37 yards for the game's only touchdown. You got to score from turnovers! – Peyton Manning had a poor day, contributing two interceptions and a goal‐line fumble to Indianapolis' four turnovers. But Cleveland could not capitalize, scoring only three points off Indianapolis' mistakes. North Vs Colts ‐ The Colts are 3‐0 against the AFC North
Carolina Panthers (9‐3) 35 Greenbay Packers (5‐7) 31 How are the Panthers quietly sneaking under the radar? If you pick the top teams in the NFL, I bet you wouldn’t immediately think of the Panthers. They have the joint third best record in the NFL and are almost a certain shoe in for the playoffs. Greenbay meanwhile couldn’t have higher publicity – the old Rodgers Favre debate will go on into the offseason and this team has immense pressure to perform. Let’s see who won the battle of high profile and no profile! Mushin Muhammad fumbled away the first play of the game but the Packers could do nothing with it...The Panthers got the ball back and quickly drove the ball down the field to the 1yd line – DeAngelo Williams then carried it in from 1yd out for the TD. (You’re gonna see a lot of that!) Second quarter now and Mason Crosby opened it up with a 32yd field goal to get the Pack on the board. Jake Delhomme decided to cap off his next successful drive with a 1yd TD run by...Jake Delhomme. Aaron Rodgers finally got his gunslinger (no reference) arm fired up, he went to Donald Driver from 6yds out and he got the Lambeau Leap! After Aaron Rodgers fumbled the ball away on the first possession of his next drive, DeAngelo Williams ran in from...1yd out for his second TD (from 1yd out) of the day! The Panthers took a 21‐10 lead into halftime. Mason Crosby didn’t come out firing...he came out kicking! He struck a 44yd FG attempt to close the gap, followed by an impressive 8 play drive orchestrated by the Rodgers passing game, Rodgers capped it off with a 5yd pass to Donald Lee for a TD – Rodgers then hit Greg Jennings for two to tie the game at 21. Could the Packers put together a late rally and win the game...it certainly looked that way when Rodgers went deep to Greg Jennings from 21yds out for the leading TD. But DeAngelo Williams wasn’t finished with his 1yd mayhem; he got in again from 1yd out to tie the game – his third 1yd hustle of the day. The Packers got the ball back again and managed a 16 play drive, but could only get a 19yd Mason Crosby field goal out of it. (That would be crucial.) When Delhomme got the ball in his hands he set up a 54yd pass deep to star Steve Smith...he went down to the 1yd line. Guess who punched it in? Yes, of course it was DeAngelo Williams for his FOURTH 1yd TD run of the day. The Pack get one last chance for the win but Rodgers was intercepted by Jon Beason and the game ended. Game Notes.... o
Take Your Chances – It's hard to ignore running back DeAngelo Williams, who scored four touchdowns, including the winning score with 1:30 left in the game. But it was Steve Smith's 54‐yard reception down to the Packers 1‐yard line in the closing minutes that allowed Williams' final heroics. Smith was shut out in the first half but finished with four receptions for 105 yards.
Atlanta Falcons (8‐4) 22 San Diego Chargers (3‐8) 16 You know the word that you think of when you see these two teams...”Surprising.” But most certainly not in the same way. The Chargers have disappointed the NFL – they’ve continuously lost close games, they’ve not utilised the run game properly and they just aren’t playing as well as they should for a team with so very much talent. On the flip side of the coin is most definitely the Atlanta Falcons, these team is almost inspirational – they have overcome so many problems and adversity that they have become the feel good team of this year – Rookie of the year Matt Ryan (that’s my prediction!) has transformed the team alongside coach Mike Smith – Let’s see what happened in this “surprising” matchup! Jason Elam drew first blood for the Falcons; his 35yd field goal gave them the lead. After Harry Douglas fumbled away a muff on the kickoff, Ladanian Tomlinson took the ball in from 3yds out for the first TD of the day. Jason Elam cut the score down to side with a 40yd field goal, swiftly followed by a Matt Ryan TD from 18yds out for former Charger, Justin Peelle. John Abraham was getting pressure all day and he will be credited with the tackle that forced Phillip Rivers into an intentional grounding call in the end zone, for the Falcon’s safety. The half ended 15‐7 to the Falcons. The Falcons didn’t start quite as well in the second half, Matt Ryan’s pass to Brian Finneran was fumbled and Eric Weddle Picked it up and took it the distance – 86yd fumble return TD. Remember the kickoff fumbler Harry Douglas – well Matt Ryan gave him a reprieve when he tossed a 5yd TD pass his way at the start of the fourth quarter. After Nate Kaeding had a field goal blocked, he got a second chance towards the end of the game and nailed a 28yd field goal. The Chargers could do no more and the Falcons win on the road and advance to an 8‐4 record – they are still in the Wildcard hunt. Game Notes.... o o
Old Vs New...New won – Former LaDainian Tomlinson understudy Michael Turner continued his strong play with Atlanta by rushing for 120 yards. Tomlinson, meanwhile, was held to just 24 yards on 14 carries. Are you sure he’s a rookie? – Falcons rookie QB Matt Ryan exploited the Chargers' league‐worst pass defense to the tune of 207 yards and two touchdowns. More impressive than his statistics was his timing. On all four of Atlanta's scoring drives, Ryan made a key third‐down completion.
Denver Broncos (7‐5) 34 New York Jets (8‐4) 17 Well the big boy Broncos have been quietly winning games and have amassed a 7‐5, playoff worthy, record. The Jets have been winning games in a big way and over some big teams – only last week they dealt the Titans their first and only loss of the season to date. This was a battle of the aerial assault and would Old man Favre or Young Gun Jay Cutler reign supreme? Well the game began with WR Brad Smith fumbling the ball away and it was recovered by Vernon Fox of the Broncos, he took it all the way back to the house for a 23yd TD. It didn’t take the Jets long to respond though, two plays later they handed it off to Thomas Jones and he sliced and diced his way 59yds to the end zone. This was already a big play game and Jay Cutler made it even bigger when he went deep to rookie sensation Eddie Royal from 59yds out – another electrifying TD for the Broncos. The game cooled down a bit when Matt Prater was called in to kick a 25yd field goal, which he nailed. Thomas Jones is still the threat the Jets wanted and he went through the Broncos DB’s with ease (that rhymes!) 29yds out to bring the Jets within 3 points. After Favre threw a pick to Dre Bly, Patrick Hillis – the new rookie RB in Denver – took the ball in from 1yd out for his first TD of the day. It was halftime when Prater added another field goal from 35yds out – the Broncos were up 27‐14. The only score of the third quarter came from a Jay Cutler pick – it set up Jay Feeley from 30yds out for the three points It was left up to Jay Cutler to kill off any Jet comeback, after Brett Favre failed a fourth down attempt – Cutler went High (but not in the Ricky Williams sense!), up top to Brandon Stokely from 36yds deep and that was the game. All that was left was for Favre to fail another fourth down and the game was over. Game Notes.... o o
Snap! – Denver's win snapped New York's five‐game winning streak Run For The Hillis – Broncos rookie RB Peyton Hillis recorded a season‐high 129 rushing yards. He is the first player to rush for more than 100 yards against the Jets this season
Pittsburgh Steelers (9‐3) 33 New England Patriots (7‐5) 10 One of my friends came up to me on Tuesday, tapped me on the shoulder with a rolled up newspaper and exclaimed “Did you see the Steelers – Patriots result?” It was no surprise that he was excited with the result (being a Steelers fan), this was most certainly the most anticipated game of the week and a real battle between dominating offense and shutdown defence – let’s see which prevailed...The Patriots defence picked off Big Ben Roethlisberger on his first drive of the game, that pick was quickly followed by a 2yd Sammy Morris TD run. Jeff Reed got three back for the Steelers – the quarter ended 7‐3. Steve Gostkowski got his first field goal of the day – striking it between the uprights from 29yds out. You know the Steelers...you know Big Ben...he compiled a 9 play drive which culminated with a deep pass to Santonio Holmes which went for a TD – 19yds out. We were tied at 10 going into halftime. The game did indeed look pretty even, but this was where it ended...The Steelers put together a 14 plays drive for a 25yd Jeff Reed field goal, after the Patriots muffed the catch on the kickoff, it took just 1 play for Big Ben to hit Hines Ward from 11yds out – they began to build up a lead. After Cassell fumbled the ball away on his next possession, Reed added another 20yd field goal to extend the lead. Cassell was sacked again, fumbled again but this time the Steelers missed a 40yds field goal (about the only time they couldn’t take advantage of the all too common, Patriot turnovers.)Cassell was once again picked off on the next drive and Reed added yet another 40yds field goal. The game ended when Cassell threw his second interception of the game, Lawrence Timmons took it to the 1yd line and Gary Russell took the ball in from 1yd out. The Steelers annihilate the Patriots in the second half – forcing too many turnovers for the Patriots to correct. The Steel Curtain came back for a half. Game Notes.... o o o
Simple As That – The Pittsburgh hadn't won in New England since a 24‐21 overtime victory in 1997. ... The Patriots haven't allowed an opponent to score 30 unanswered points since 2003. ... The Patriots haven't turned the ball over five times since 2006 Hold on...simple! – Amid dropped passes and turnovers, the Patriots could never get in a rhythm on offense. They finished 1‐for‐13 on third‐down tries. Bad day at the office! ‐ The Patriots turned the ball over 5 times, Including 2 interceptions by Cassell, 2 fumbled by Cassell and a muffed kickoff return.
Kansas City (2‐10) 20 Oakland Raiders (3‐9) 13 Welcome to the battle of the underperformers, live from the Black Hole in Oakland – Al Davies was looking at any player who played particularly well...just so he had a reason to fire then next week! But first they had a game to play! Sebastian Janikowski provided the first three points of the game; his 25yd field goal gave the Raiders the early lead. That was quickly followed by Charlie Barth adding 3 for the chiefs – tie game. Maurice Leggett was then handed the gift of a TD, a fake field goal went horribly wrong and Leggett...legged it 67yds to the end zone for the TD! After Tyler Thigpen threw a pick it took just a 1yd Justin Fargas run up the middle for a TD, tying the game. Remember Larry Johnson...the Raiders certainly would, he capped off a 10 play drive with a 10yd TD run early in the fourth quarter. After Fargas fumbled away his next carry, Charlie Barth added another 3 points to the Chiefs total – 27yds out it was 20‐10. The best the Raiders could manage was a 51yd Sebastian Janikowski field goal, the Chiefs got the ball back and ran out the clock. A surprise road victory for the Chiefs, they beat the Raiders at home and it looks like Sebastian Janikowski should be leaving this week! Game Notes.... o o
3rd Down Town – The Chiefs held the Raiders to 3‐of‐13 on third down; they were successful on 50 percent of their own chances. Try Harder! – The Raiders scored on a field goal on their opening possession but they still haven't scored a touchdown on their opening drive in their last 52 games
Chicago Bears (6‐6) 14 Minnesota Vikings (7‐5) 34 The Key NFC North matchup of the week – this game would decide not only who would lead the division, but also who could open up a 2 game lead over the Greenbay Packers. Gus Frerotte was still packing the QB position in Minnesota, meanwhile “Sexy Rexy” was out and Kyle Orton was back from injury. Which QB sunk and which produced a tied NFL record? It didn’t take Kyle Orton long to remember why Devin Hester used to return kick offs – he caught a ball 30yds down the field and took it 65yds, burning the DB’s, for a TD. Ryan Longwell got the Vikings on the board with a 3 point field goal from 23yds out. After the Bears went for it all and got nothing on the 1 yd line – running it 3 times straight at the Kevin Boys in the middle (figure that one out?) The Vikings were left with a 99yd field...Gus Frerotte solved that problem by hitting the receiver they brought in to be a...deep threat. Where did they bring Bernard Berrian from...CHICAGO! Berrian had a 99yd TD catch against his old team and Frerotte is the 11th player to throw a 99yd TD pass. Frerotte drove the ball down the field again and this time he was forced to take the ball in himself from 1yd out, the Vikings take a 17‐7 lead into the locker room. After Frerotte came out and was picked, it took 2 plays before Kyle Orton hit rookie RB Matt Forte for a 2yd TD. It was Orton’s turn to go deep and he didn’t see Darren Sharper! It looked like the Bears defence didn’t see Chester Taylor as he ran in from 21yds out – untouched. Fourth quarter now and after Orton was picked, Adrian Peterson (remember him!?) took the ball in from 1yd out for his rushing TD of the day. Once Ryan Longwell had added 3 points to the Vikings score, the game was over – Vikings trounce the Bears 34‐14 and the Bears appear to have forgotten that this was a divisional matchup! Game Notes.... o
o o
Jared...who? – Vikings DE Jared Allen brought down Orton three times and made the momentum‐changing tackle that stopped the Bears on fourth‐and‐goal in the second quarter. On the next play, the Vikings completed a 99‐yard touchdown pass to take a 10‐7 lead they would never relinquish. 2nd half laughs! – Of Chicago's nine second‐half possessions, three ended in interceptions and four ended in punts. That’s just unlucky ‐ Orton had thrown a franchise‐record 206 straight passes without an interception, then was picked off three times in his next seven attempts
Jacksonville Jaguars (4‐8) 17 Houston Texans (5‐7) 30 Monday Night Football and the black cats rolled into Houston. This turned out to be a game of sacking; passing and running...don’t ask me how that’s different from any other NFL game! It was Sage Rosenfels Vs David Garrard...It was Sage who struck first – he hit his new star receiver Andre Johnson from 21yds out for the opening TD. After Rosenfels was picked...then Garrard was picked...Kris Brown added three points for the Texans from 38yds out to give the Texans a double digit lead. The second quarter really didn’t go well for the Jaguars – Maurice Jones‐Drew fumbled the ball away, Josh Scobee missed a 43yd field goal and Garrard was sacked for an 8yd loss to end their final drive of the half. It was 10‐0 at the half. After Jack Del Rio had finished greasing his hair at halftime, Kris Brown was sure making his sweat when he struck his second field goal of the day – this one from 50yds out. The Jags finally got themselves on the board when Josh Scobee struck a 29yd field goal and Del Rio could avoid the embarrassment of a shutout. Kris Brown opened the gap back up to 16‐3 when he hit a 20yd field goal. That gap increased even further after Steve Slaton ran the right‐guard route for 7yds and the TD. The game wasn’t all a loss for the Jags; Fred Taylor ran the right guard for a 4yd TD and is now the RB in Jacksonville with the most TD’s. Steve Slaton showed he can hustle when the Jags get tired – his 40yd TD run put the game impossibly out of reach. David Garrard did manage at least 1 TD on the day, hitting Reggie Williams from 18yds out. The game ended 30‐17 to the Texans and the entire Monday Night team were asking the same question all night “Where are the Jaguars?” Game Notes.... o o
Beginners Luck? – This was the Texans' first home appearance on Monday Night Football in franchise history REALLY? – The Jaguars put together one of their best offensive performances of the year statistically, but were undone by a bevy of mistakes. They committed six offensive penalties and had three turnovers
