17th Anniversary of Sexual Assault Campaign Coming in April
This upcoming April celebrates the 17th anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
This year’s campaign theme is “Embrace your Voice” and encourages individuals to use their words to promote safety and respect to put an end to sexual assault.
Sexual assault is an uncomfortable topic but can happen to anyone at any time. The
term includes acts such as rape, incest, child sexual abuse, intimate partner violence, sexual exploitation, human trafficking, sexual harassment, exposure, and any unwanted sexual contact. Those who commit or take part in such acts can be strangers, but it is commonly found that they are acquaintances, family or trusted individuals. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, nearly 1 in 5 American women have experienced rape or attempted rape at some point in their lives, and 1 in 67 American men have experienced rape or attempted rape.
The campaign acknowledges that an entire month is not long enough to put an end to
sexual assault, but generates enough attention to stimulate and expand other efforts throughout the rest of the year.
The Sexual Assault Awareness Month campaign works to educate the broader public on
the issue(s) of sexual assault and progress toward social change.
