Interviews and surveys
My emails, conversations and one formal interview with the director of the Sunnyside Public Library, Don Francisco Garcia-Ortiz, afforded me an entre to the library. He was able to make arrangements for me to conduct all of my research at the library and also gave me access to some library records. When we sat down for our interview these are the questions that I had prepared. 1. How many of your patrons speak Spanish? Do they prefer it? 2. What kinds of outreach programs do you have? Or would you like to have? 3. How much of the collection is in Spanish? 4. How is the collection development done for Spanish materials? 5. How does the English speaking community react to having such a large Spanish speaking population? 6. Are Latino patrons different? 7. What kind of budgetary limitations do you have? 8. What is the most difficult part of your job? 9. What is your vision for the library/
On the following two pages is the questionnaire that was distributed to library patrons by the staff. They were then mailed to me to compile. One side was printed in English and the reverse was in Spanish so that each person could choose the language they felt most comfortable using.
