HOUSTON TOAD First discovered in the late 1940s, the Houston toad was formally recognized as a new species in 1953. During the 1960s, they vanished from the Houston area following an extended drought and the rapid urban expansion of the city.
About the species • Generally brown and speckled, adults may grow up to 3.5 inches. Limited to a small range in Southeast Texas, the largest known population lives in Bastrop State Park.
