[Writer and Consultator] Where we live can influence our happiness, wealth, health, and prosperity. The Vastu Shastra is the Vedic science of building. When one studies the Vastu Shastra, he learns to create buildings that favorably influence those things that bring us happiness. The Vastu Shastra considers the astrological placement of the Sun, Earth, and other planets during the actual construction. It also considers where the building site is located, the site’s shape, the proposed building’s shape, the direction the building
will face, the location of gates, entry doors, room doors, windows, and the building’s general design. North and east are considered important directions—east because it is the direction from which the sun rises. Assessing the Land When purchasing a property, it is a good idea to stand on the land and feel its vibration for a few moments. Trust your feelings. If you feel positive about it, consider buying the land. If not, it is probably not good for you. It is best to buy land where happy and successful people have lived. A house sold by a person in distress or who is impoverished, should be purchased only with caution. A dilapidated or haunted house should not be purchased at all. The land should be cultivatable and should smell good. It is best not to build on nonarable land. Land that contains many rocks, anthills, many worms, bones, broken pottery, sludge, and thorny trees should not be purchased. If the center of the land is humped like the shell of a turtle, it should not be purchased. The color of the soil should also be considered. White soil is good for brahmans (priests, teachers, scientists, or intellectuals), red for ksatriyas (rulers, soldiers, or administrators), yellow for vaisyas (businessmen, farmers or bankers), and black for sudras (laborers, artisans, craftsmen, or servants). When you assess the soil, do not just make a surface check, but also dig about 4m (12 ft) down. If the soil is black up to 1m (3 ft) down and white or red below that, the land can be purchased. According to Vastu Shastra, black and clayey soil is not good for building. If the soil is crumbly rock, money can easily be gotten. Yellow soil is good for businessmen. Another test of land quality is to dig a knee-deep hole (2/3m or 2'x2'x2') and then refill it. If after filling the hole you have some soil left over, the land is good. If there is no soil left after filling the hole, the land is average. If the returned soil does not even fill the hole, this is not a good sign. Such land should not be purchased. This shows the soil’s natural moisture and aeration.Again dig the same sized hole. This time, fill it with water. If it takes more than an hour for the water to be absorbed, this is a good sign. If there are many cracks in the hole after the water has been absorbed, the construction may cost more than you expect. This is a percolation test done even in the U.S. to test for clay deposits. The cracks indicate clay soil, which is not best for water drainage and can cause foundation problems, etc. Also, wastes are not carried away properly, which can bring disease. Do not purchase land that has been used as a crematorium, cemetery, or a samadhi (tomb for a holy person). The land should not be purchased if in the recent past someone has committed suicide on it, or if there have been several deaths over the period of a couple of months. It is usually best not to purchase land next to a bridge. If the bridge is on the north or east sides, it definitely should not be purchased. If it is on the south or west sides, that is a safer purchase. It is also usually best not to purchase land that shares a well with another property. The land can be purchased, however, if the water supply is a common well on the north, east, or northeast side. A plot of land situated on a hill is also not a good purchase in most cases. It is better
to purchase level ground. If the land to be purchased is on the side of a hill, however, and the land slopes down toward the north or east, that is all right. If the land slopes to the west, do not purchase it. After choosing and purchasing land, plants should be grown on the land. Also, if possible, keep a cow and her calf on the land for a while to make it more auspicious. The Land The direction that the front of a property faces is important. The best shapes for plots of land are square or rectangular, facing squarely on the four cardinal directions. A land tilt of 20 degrees, off square by 20 degrees, is acceptable. If the plot is rectangular, it is better that the longer sides run north to south rather than west to east. If the plot of land does not squarely face the four cardinal directions, and if the road does not run in one of the four cardinal directions, the house should be built facing the four directions The house should be square or rectangular, and the faces of the building should each be toward a cardinal direction, and not built facing the road. It is not good to purchase a piece of land squeezed between two larger pieces of land as such land will bring its owner poverty. The northeast side of the land should be the lowest side. If the northeast side is at a higher elevation than other sides of the property, you can dig soil from that one side and use it to build up the other parts. The land should either slope down toward the north or east, but not toward the west or south. Land sloping north brings riches, sloping east brings good fortune, sloping south brings ruin, and sloping west brings financial loss. It is auspicious if tall buildings or hills do not obstruct the north, northeast, and east sides of the land. Do not purchase land with such obstructions to those sides because the sun’s rays will be blocked.Having those same obstructions blocking the west or south sides, however, bring health and wealth—light coming from the southwest is not beneficial. The sun’s rays traveling westward are considered harmful. Thus such obstructions block out harmful rays. For the same reason, a water source located on the southwest side of a building will cause the owner misery. Similarly, there should be a minimum number of doors and windows set into the southwest side of a building; the majority of windows should be set in the northeast side. The boundary walls around a property should be higher in the west and south and lower in the north and east. It is auspicious if the plot has a river or a stream flowing through it on the northeast, or if there is a lake on the same side. It is not auspicious if there is an electrical power supply or large electric pole on the northeast side of the plot. A telephone pole is not negative in the northeast, however. There should not be any valley, a depression in the land, or large pit around the land. Construction Construction should not stop once it begins. Workers should not be unnecessarily pushed to speed up their work; work for the day should stop at sunset. No construction should be done at night. A qualified engineer should always oversee the construction.
Building materials should be stored in the southwest corner of the property during construction. The storage area or structure can also be built in the southeast corner, at least 1m (3 ft) from the property boundary. The guard should stay in a house in the southeast corner. Thieves will be a danger if the guard stays in the northwest corner, and the guard should not stay in the southwest corner. Order of construction: the well, the storage house, and then the boundary wall. Roads in Relation to Land A square piece of land surrounded by roads on four sides is considered very good. It should be purchased even if at a high cost. A person who owns this land will become wealthy, healthy, and happy. If a road runs alongside the property and ends at the northeast corner, that is also very good. If a road ends on any other parts of the property, however, that plot is usually not good. A road on the north side of the property is good, but a road on the south side is not so good. If there is only one road, it is best if it is located on the east side. It is not so good if it is located on the west side. If there are roads on only the east and north side, that is good. If there are roads on the west and north, it is average. Roads on the north, west, and east—that is, only on these three sides—is not so good. Roads on the north, south, and west is also not so good. It is inauspicious if there are three roads only on the east, south, and west.Land should also not be next to a T or Y intersection. Negative Location of Land There are other aspects of land assessment that should be considered. The plot should not be within twice the distance of the height of the house to a public place— a hospital, factory, temple, church, marriage hall, courthouse, cemetery, or cremation grounds. There should not be a laundry place, shoe shop, meat shop, or workshop with loud machinery opposite the property. The house should be at least 25m (80 ft) from the entrance of a temple. The property’s gate should not face a temple or church, and the shadow of a temple or church should not fall on the house. If the public place is twice the distance of the height of the house away from the house, it will have no effect. Building Material Only new bricks, wood, and materials should be used when building a new house. Materials from an old building should not usually be used to build a new one in case those old materials repeat negative incidents that occurred in the old house. There is unhappiness in using old things. If there are old materials available, better to sell them and use the money to buy new materials. Wood from thorny trees should not be used, as it will have a negative effect. Materials that have been stored for a long time should also not be used. Iron grills should only be used when needed. Shape of the Land The best properties are either square or rectangular. If the plot is not a perfect rectangle, it is best if at least the southwest and southeast sides of the land are at 90º angles from one another. The southwest side of the quadrilateral should definitely not be extended past the southeast side, even if that means giving away a
portion of the plot. Land that extends past the northeast side of the quadrilateral, however, brings wealth, happiness, and good name. Land extending on the northeast side is very good. Extensions on any other side are inauspicious. Extensions of the northwest side will cause you to lose money and peace. If the land is cut in the corner this is not good. If possible the land to fill in the missing corner should be purchased. If the land is cut short on the northeast side it is very bad and is not aspicious; do not purchase it. It is like a headless body. Round, oval, and triangular plots should be avoided. The house should not be built in the shape of a diamond, with the corner facing north. L-shaped plots are also inauspicious and should not be purchased. It is good if the plot is narrower at the entrance and wider at its rear, but the opposite is not good. Well or Water Source It is advised that the first construction project for the new house is to dig the well. If water is used from this well for the construction, it is auspicious for the family who will live in the house. It is best that the well or water source is on the north or northeast side of the land, or if water comes from the municipality, it should enter from the northeast side. If you draw a line from the southeast corner to the northeast corner, the well should be to the right or left of the line, not on it. The well can also be in the north or east sides of the property. The well should not be in the northwest or southeast corners, as this is inauspicious. It is especially inauspicious if the well is dug in the southwest corner. It is also inauspicious to have a well in the middle of a house. Wells should be round. Ideally, the well water should be exposed to sunlight for five hours a day. It is not recommended to share wells between two properties. The well should be dug after puja (worship) has been performed on the land at an astrologically auspicious time. This will insure that the water will be pure. The well should be dug under an auspicious star, such as Rohini, Hasta, Uttara Bhadrapada, Uttara, etc. It should be dug on an auspicious day—a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. The well should be dug during a downward-facing constellation or star, such as, Krittika, Purva Phalguni, Mula, Bharani, Ashlesha, Purva Bhadrapada, or Purvashadha.Water departing from the kitchen and bathroom should flow to the northeast and leave the house from this side. Compound Wall and Gate The compound wall should be built before the house is constructed. Construction should begin during an auspicious constellation, and on a favorable day—a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. It should also be begun during an auspicious day of the lunar month—Pratipada, Panchami, Shashthi, Dashami, Ekadashi, or Purnima. The compound wall should not be higher than the house, and construction of it should begin on the southwest side. The southwest part of the wall should be higher than the rest of the wall. The walls on the north and east sides should be 53cm (21 inches) shorter than on the west and south sides. If this is not possible, then the north and east sides should be a minimum of 8cm (3 inches) shorter.
Do not set the gate on the south side. It is best that there are two gates to the compound, so evil things entering one gate will exit from the other. Outside of Main Building It is best if the house is built on the southwest section of the land. Any open space should be to the north and east. Open space on the west side of the land is not good for the family’s male members. It is also good to keep a tulasi plant in the northeast corner. The electric generators should be situated on the southeast section of the plot, not the northeast, which is inauspicious. Loud machinery should not be placed near the house. If there is to be a swimming pool, waterfalls, or fountains, they should be set to the north, east, or northeast. Gardens, plants, or the lawns should also be set to the north, east, or northeast. Plants should be less than 1m (3 ft) in height. Swings should be to the north or east, and should swing from east to west. Outdoor seats should be placed in the south or west of the open area, and people should face north or east while sitting. It is considered inauspicious to block the entrance to a house, such as with a tree or telephone pole. If one of these things is more than twice the distance of the house’s height away, it will not have any effect.Trash or dirty water should not be kept near a house’s entrance (or the entrance to a place of business), and neither should it be kept near the property’s entrance. An unclean stream or pool of unclean water should not be located in front of the house.Annexes or outhouses should not be on the north or east sides of the house, and they definitely should not touch the eastern or northern boundary walls. A garage, building, or servants’ quarters built separately from the house should be located to the southeast or northwest of the main house but should not touch any of the boundary walls. Ideally such quarters should not touch the southeast corner, but should be slightly west (without touching the east wall). They should also not touch the northwest corner but should be slightly south (without touching the north wall). They should be established about 1m (3 ft) from the wall. Parking Cars should be parked facing east or north. A car should never be parked facing south. If a car is parked facing west or northwest, the owner will spend a long time traveling. The parking lot should be in the northwest corner of the property. It should not be located to the southwest or northeast. Parking can also be located in the basement, on the north or east side. A parking garage should not be connected to the compound wall or the main building. The parking garage should be painted a light color, not a dark color. Roof The roof of the house should slope towards the northeast and rainwater should flow to the north, east, or northeast direction. Balconies and Verandahs
Balconies, verandahs, and terraces should ideally be built on the north, northeast, or east sides of the house, not on the south or west sides. If a balcony is on the southwest side of a house, it should be covered and closed. The floor or roof over a balcony or terrace should be lower than the floor or roof of the main building. It is best if the verandah’s roof is slanted toward the northeast. Tin is a good roofing material for such structures. The verandah’s corners should not be rounded, and balconies should not have arches.Flowerpots on the verandah should be small. No creepers should be planted on a verandah. The seats on the verandah should be set on the south or west sides. Shoes can be removed and placed on the verandah. They should not be placed to the northeast. Inside the Building Furniture, such as sofas, should be placed in the southeast, south, or west sides of a room. The house’s owner should sit facing north or east, and his guests should sit facing west or south. It is best that the northeast corner of each room in the house be left empty. If furniture must be set in the northeast corner, it should be set 15cm (six inches) from the wall. Do not align doors within the house. One door should not lead directly into another. It is best when a student studies that he face north, northeast, or east. Therefore a table in a study room should be placed in the south or west sides of the room. Books should be stored in the southwest side of the room. Do not keep money in a place facing south. When one prays, he should face either north or east. Beds should face either west or south to insure that when a person rises in the morning, he is facing either north or east. While asleep, one should place his head to the south, east, or west, not north. If one’s place of worship is in the bedroom (in the northeast), one should sleep with his head facing east to avoid pointing his feet toward the altar.Mirrors should be placed on the north or east walls, not on the south or west walls. Do not keep broken mirrors in the house. Clocks should be placed on the west, north, or east walls. Clothes should be washed in the southeast corner of the house. Medicine should be kept in the northeast corner of the house, and a person should face northeast while taking it. It is best to nurse those who are ill in the southwest corner of the house, although the northwest corner is also good. Rainwater and wastewater should leave the house from the northeast side. It should flow west to east or south to north. There should be an even number of columns and beams in the house, not odd. Doors should generally be made from a single piece of wood and should open on the left side. A television can be placed in the southeast side of a room. An overhead water tank should be located in the southwest side of a building. Stairways should be on the south, southwest, or west sides of a building.
Certain pictures should not be hung in a house such as nudes, animals fighting, captured elephants, hunting scenes, trees without fruits or flowers, snakes, owls, bats, vultures and pigeons. Entrance Gate and Main Door The main door of the house should be larger than the other doors entering the house. The main door should have two shutters and open to the inside of the building. Teak is a good material for the entrance door. It is best that a house has two entrances. The exit door should be smaller than the entrance, and it should have only one shutter. If there are two external doors for the house, they should not be set in a straight line. When one enters the house, there should not be a wall in front of the entrance. There should be a door that opens to the next room. A shadow should not fall on the main door. The main door of the house should not be below ground. Neither should the main door be in the center of the house, nor in the extreme corners. If the door is set in the north wall, move it east of center; if it’s in the east wall, move it north of center. If it is set in the south wall, it should be moved east of center; if it is in the west wall, move it south of center. Some authorities say that if the house’s entrance is in the west wall. It should be centered. Some Vastu authorities say that to figure out where to place a main door, divide the house into nine parts. The door should be in the fourth section of the house from the left hand side. From the right side of the house, the entrance is in the sixth division from the right. The main door should not be situated across from the main door of another house. The entrance doors of two houses should not be exactly opposing one another. Neither should two houses share a common entrance. If the entrance of the house is to the south, there should not be a balcony or verandah in front of the door. It is good to set gates to both the property and the entrance to the house on the north or east sides. It is also all right to have the main door on the west wall. It is not advised to have the main entrance on the south side. It is considered auspicious if the entrance to the property and the main door of the house are on the same side. It is not considered good if the main door to the house is on the opposite side to the entrance of the property. There should not be an underground tank, septic tank, or canal under the main entrance. There should not be any abandoned, wrecked buildings in front of the main entrance. It is good to decorate a house’s entrance with pictures or statues of Laksmi, Ganesh or Kuvera and auspicious signs such as OM or the Swastika. Inauspious pictures should not be on the door. Doors should have thresholds. Shoes should not be kept in front of the door, but to the side. The door should not be slanted, sliding, or circular. Overhead Water Tank The overhead water tank should be in the southwest (best) or west corners of the building. An overhead water tank should not be located in the northeast or southeast corners, or in the middle of the roof. It is also best that it is not located in the
northwest unless the tank is small and is located approximately 1m (2 or 3 ft) from the building’s corner. The tank should be elevated at least 1m (2 or 3 ft) above the roof, on a platform. If possible, the tank should not be made of plastic. If it must be plastic, however, it should either be black or dark blue plastic, because such colors aid the absorption of sunlight. A dark water tank while absorbing sun for heat doesn’t encourage microbial growth as quickly as a light-colored tank would do.If possible, there should be different tanks for the kitchen and bathrooms. The House It is best if the building’s walls are higher on the west and south sides and lower on the north and east sides. Also, the south and west walls should be thicker than the north and east walls, if possible. The building’s floor and roof should be higher on the south and west sides, lower on the north and east sides. Neither the ground nor the building should be higher in the northeast than in the southwest. Rooms in the House Worship (Temple) Room Worship should be done in the northeast, north, or east sides of the house. It is best that the temple room is in the northeast corner of the house. The worship room should not be to the south. The place of worship should be on the ground floor and not upstairs. The altar should be located on the northeast side of the temple room. The deities or pictures of the deities should either face east or west, and should not face north or south. It is best that the Deities face west and the worshipers face east. The altar should not be set into the wall but should be at least 2.5 cm (an inch) from it. The door to the temple room should have two shutters. Toilets should never be above or below the place of worship. White, light yellow, or light blue are good colors for a temple room. It is good if the worship room is shaped like a pyramid, sloping inward as it goes upward toward the roof in the four directions. Kitchen The kitchen should ideally be in the southeast corner of the house, its windows on the east and south sides. There can also be a window on the west side. If the kitchen cannot be in the southeast corner, it is all right to place it in the northwest corner. But in general, the kitchen should not be in the north, and should certainly not be in the northeast corner. Locating the kitchen to the southwest will cause problems. The kitchen should not be next to or across from a toilet, nor should it be directly in front of the main door. Cooking should be done in the southeast corner or on the east side of the kitchen. It is best to cook while facing east, but facing north is also all right. It is advisable not to put the stove on the northern wall. The cooking platform should not touch the wall but should be placed at least 8 cm (3 inches) from the wall. The stove should not be in front of the kitchen’s door.Electrical items such as microwaves, grinders, and mixers should be placed in the southeast corner of the kitchen. The sink should be in the northeast corner. The southwest wall should be used for storage. The refrigerator should be in the northwest, southeast, south, or west. It should not be placed on the northeast side. If it is on the southwest side of the kitchen, be sure
to set it away from the wall. If there is a dining table in the kitchen, it should be placed on the north or west side. The door to the toilet should not face the dining table. Kitchens should be painted yellow, rose, red, orange, or chocolate brown. If possible, do not paint the walls white or black. Living (Sitting) Room The living room should be on the north side of the house. Furniture should be square or rectangular, not round or oval. It is good if the ceiling slopes down toward the northeast direction. The air-conditioner should be in the west, not the southeast. Furniture should mainly be in the west and south section of the room. The walls should be painted white, yellow, green, or blue, never red or black. Depressing paintings should not be placed on the walls. Bedrooms The main bedroom should be on the southwest or northwest side of the house. If there is an upper story in the house, the master bedroom should be on this floor, in the southwest corner. Adult married children can also use this room. Younger children, however, should not use it because that will cause trouble in the household. Bedrooms on the northeast side of the house will also cause trouble. The children’s bedrooms should be in the northwest or west. The younger children’s bedroom can also be on the east side of the house, Newly married couples should not use a bedroom on the east side.Guest bedrooms are best located in the northwest corner, but can also be located in the northeast corner. Bedroom walls should be painted a light rose, dark blue, dark green, gray, etc. Some authorities say that the walls should not be painted white or a light yellow. The door should be set in the east, west or north, and should ideally be one shutter. One should sleep in his own house with his head facing east or south. If one is staying in someone else’s house, or while traveling, he should sleep with his head facing west. One should never sleep with his head facing north. Upon rising from bed, the right foot should be placed on the floor first. If one is to study in the bedroom, the east side should be used. The wardrobe should be located on the northwest or southwest side of the bedroom. TV, heaters, and air conditioners should be located in the southeast corner. The southwest corner of the room should not be vacant. An attached bathroom could be built on the west or north sides of the room. It is best not to keep the safe in a bedroom, but if this is the only place for the safe, it should be located on the south wall, opening north. Safe Room Money, valuables, or a safe should be stored in a room on the north side of the house. This is the side of Kubera, the god of wealth. The door to this room should be facing north or east. The walls should be painted yellow, because yellow leads to an increase of wealth. If a safe is large, it can be placed in the south, southwest, or west sides of the house, but it should always be set a few inches from the wall. It should not be in the southwest or southeast corner, and should definitely not be in a northeast corner. The safe should face north and open toward the north or east. It is inauspicious to
have a safe opening to the south—this will cause a loss of money. The safe should not be located under any beams.Safes should be installed on a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, when the Sun is in the constellations of Dhanishtha, Rohini, Uttara, Swati, Shravan or Punarvasu. Dining Room The dining room should be located on the west side of the house, or on the east or north side of the building. If the kitchen is on the ground floor, the dining room should not be on an upper floor but should also be located on the ground floor. The door leading into the dining room should be on the east, north, or west side of the room. It should not have arches. The house’s main entrance door should not face the dining room’s door.It is best to face east or west while eating. The head of the family should face east during meals. Other members of the family can face east, north, or west, but it is not advisable to face south. The dining table should not be round or oval but either square or rectangular. It should not fold from the wall or be attached to the wall. A sink can be located in the northeast corner of the dining room, or on the north or east sides of the room. No toilets should be attached to the dining room. Bathrooms Bathrooms can be on the west or northwest sides of the building, but not on the eastern or northeastern sides. The toilet room should also not be located on the southeast, the southwest, or in the center of the building. The morning sun falling on the body after bathing is good, so windows should be set in the north or east sides of the room. Ideally, toilets should face south, not east or west (in the direction of the sun). The toilet should be located on the west or northwest side of the room and should be built 30–60cm (1 or 2 feet) above the ground. An attached bathroom should be on the west or northwest side of a room, never on the northeast side. Sinks should be placed on the northeast, north, or east sides of the room. Bathtubs should be located on the northeast, west, or east sides. Bathroom walls should be painted white, sky blue, or another light shade. Do not use black or dark red. Water should leave the bathroom from the east or northeast side. Water should not leave from the southwest or southeast directions. The overhead septic tank should be on the northwest side of the house. Study Room The library or study should be located on the west side of the building, but should not be located in the corners of the house. When using a library or study, it is best to sit facing east or north. The bookshelves should not be in the northwest or southwest corner. Books should be in the east, north, or west sides of the room. The door should be two-shuttered and should be located in the northeast, north, or west. Windows can be set on the east, north, or west walls. The walls should be painted white, sky blue, cream, or light green.
If one will not sleep in the room, a pyramidal shape (walls sloping inward as they go upward towards the ceiling) will help study and meditation. Storage Area The storage areas should be located in the northwest part of the building, but not in the north or east. The storage room door should not be on the southwest side of the room. Storage cabinets should be located on the west or north sides of the room. Butter, ghee, oil, and cooking gas should be kept in the southeast corner. Stairways Best to build stairways on the southwest, or if necessary, on the south or west sides of the house. Do not build stairways on the northeast side, as it will cause loss of wealth. The staircase should go up from east to west or north to south. The same stairway that goes to the upper floor should not also go down to the basement. Stairways should be built with an odd number of stairs—9, 11, or 15 steps, for example. The number of stairs should not end with a zero if you must build an even number—there should not be 10 or 20 steps—because it is best to begin climbing steps with the right foot and also to end the climb on the right foot. This is not possible when there is an even number of stairs. The right foot is equated with gain, the left with loss.Circular stairways are not good. The doorway at the top of the stairway should be at least 20cm (8 inches) lower than the doorway at the bottom of the stairs. Broken stairs should be repaired immediately to avoid accidents. The stairway should be painted a light color. The worship room, safe, or toilet should not be located under a staircase. Basement Basements should ideally not be built under the entire house. If that is impossible, use only the northeast section. Heavy equipment can be kept on the south and west sides. It is best that the basement should only be in the northeast side of a house. It can also be located on the east side of the house. It should not, however, be located only on the south, southeast, or west side. The floor of the basement should slope downward towards the northeast. The walls should be at least 3m (9 ft) high. The basement should be painted white but should not be blue. The heater, water heater, or electrical panels should be in the southeast corner of the basement. Since sunrays do not enter basements, this highly reduces the basement’s positive effect on the persons living in them. Therefore, a basement should not be used for living as far as possible. Basements are also not good places to conduct business. The basement’s effects will be improved if one-fourth of the basement is above ground. Mezzanine A mezzanine or loft should be built on the south, west, or southwest sides of a room. Position of Rooms Directions

Upper Floor It is best that there are more doors and windows on the north and east sides of the building. There should be fewer windows and doors on the upper floors than on the lower ones. It is also said that the number of doors and windows on the upper floor should not equal the amount of doors and windows on the ground floor. The ceiling height of the rooms on the upper floor should be less than the ceiling height of the rooms on the ground floor. If only part of the upper floor is used, this part should be built in the southwest area. The balcony should be on the north, east, or northeast side. The balcony should not be in the southwest corner. Bedrooms and studies should be located on the upper floor. A storage area for heavy items should be located on the lower floor, and not the upper. Trees and Plants It is always good to grow a tulasi plant on one’s property. Tulasi should be located on the north, northeast, or east sides of the house, or in front of the house. Trees should not be planted directly in front of the house’s main entrance. There should be an even number of trees on one’s property, not an odd number.Trees should be planted on the south or west sides of the house. Ideally, they should be planted on both these sides rather than on only one side. It is not good to plant a tall tree on the north, northeast, or east sides of a building. Smaller trees may be planted on the east or north sides, but no trees should be planted in the northeast corner. Tall trees should not be too close to a building as they block the sunlight. A tree’s shadow should not fall on the house.Large trees should not be located too near the house as their roots can damage the foundation and compound wall. Also, the roots of large trees absorb sunlight quickly, meaning these positive rays will not be received by the building. Do not allow tree branches to touch the house. Stone sculptures and rock gardens should be located on the southwest side of the house because they are heavy. Thorny plants should not be planted near the house. Cactus should not be planted at all. Thorny plants other than roses have a negative energy. Ideally all thorny plants should be pulled up and destroyed. A list of good trees to plant: coconut, neem, betal, sandalwood, lemon, pineapple, bilva, almond, jackfruit, pomegranate, mango, amla, and katha. Banyan and pipal (aswatha) are sacred trees; they should usually only be planted near a temple or at a sacred place.
Creepers or other plants should not be grown by using the building or compound wall as support. Creepers should only be grown in a garden, and they should have their own independent supports. Plants should be planted during auspicious constellations. Saplings should first be planted in clay pots and only later placed in the ground. This enables them to grow better. If a tree must be removed because it is inauspicious or for other reasons, it should be removed in the months of Magh or Bhadrapada. The day before cutting the tree, worship it and express regret that it must be removed from its rooting. Promise to plant a new tree in its place. Do so within three months. When cutting the tree, it should fall east or north, not south or west. Worship of Land Certain rituals can be performed before construction on the plot begins. The land should be installed at an auspicious time, during an auspicious constellation. Mondays and Thursdays are auspicious days for such rituals. Ideally, a qualified astrologer should set the time of installation. Worship should be done in the northeast corner of the land. Before installing the land, it should be cleared. Dirt, stones, holes in the ground, and trash should be removed. Thorny bushes should also be uprooted and removed. The installation should not be done if a woman in the household is more than seven months pregnant. The groundbreaking ceremony for the house should only be done during the Uttarayan period, when the sun is in the northern hemisphere, and when the days are longer than the nights, from June 21 through December 20. House Warming Before entering a new house, a house-warming ceremony should be performed. A good time to enter a new house is in the period of Uttarayan, from June 21 through December 20, in the months of Vaishaka, Shravan, and Margashirsh, in the constellation of Uttara, Magha, Ashwini, Swati, Pushya, and Revati, on an auspicious day. It is good to confirm this time with a qualified astrologer. Ganesh-puja, Navagraha-puja (worship of the nine planets), and worship of the Vastupratima (building deity) should be performed. The residents of the building should then circumambulate the building. Then puja should be done to the threshold. Purchasing the Adjacent Plot If one wishes to purchase the land adjacent to one’s own property, it should be purchased on a Monday, Thursday, or Friday, during an auspicious constellation such as Vaishaka, Purva, Ashlesha, Mrig, Revati, Mul, or Anuradha. The land one already owns can be extended to the north, east, or northeast. The northwest corner should not be extended. If a plot is available in the southwest, west, or south sides, it should not be purchased, as it will cause misfortune and loss. If the northeast plot is available, purchase it. It is best if the adjacent lot on the northeast side is at a lower elevation than the land already owned. If such land is purchased, the dividing wall should be taken down. As far as possible, you should not construct buildings on this land. KITCHEN
There is no ambience in the home more loved and lived in by all the members of the family, the best of the family , the best place to savour the pleasure of being together with all the tastes , memories and daily habits of the family . These are feelings which need a suitable ambience , where the warmth of wood combines with the strong character of the stony materials , such as marble and granite of table tops and the counter . The hob also has a central position with a canopy formed by its hood which destroys odours and fills the ambience with light at the same time . The electrical appliances are carefully concealed beneath the worktop . Function and harmony from the dominating characterstics of the present collections . The basic concept is to finish this ambience which is the most lived in the entire family with the aim of making it a place in which it is pleasing to be together . To create , therefore , a little domestic paradise in which several people , all there together will find it easy to move about among extremely functional articles . There is no need for large spaces , but it is attractive and welcoming , perfectly in tune with the surroundings with the reminder and exaltation of stories , traditions and rediscovered family values. The marked personalities of these modern and innovative kitchen brings into the home the soothing atmosphere of colourful and lively activity . There are as many as four colours which gladden the eye and communicate a note of joyful serenity of the ambience which they furnish , creating together a happy scene . A kitchen layout should be customised to the specific requirements and needs of the users . Hence , it is important to ascertain the individual preferences overall lifestyle and eating habits of the direct users . IDEAL KITCHEN The kitchen is probably the most used (or misused !!) room in any home , requiring an efficient combination of storage spaces , working counters , seating areas and free passages . It has to be functional , practical , elegant and comfortable , all at the same time and hence , great emphasis should be laid on the overall layout design of the kitchen , especially the small (and seemingly minor ) details. There are various practical points that must be considered and discussed before commencing the designing of a new kitchen or the modification of an existing one . - The style of cooking (which varies greatly due to influences of country , state , religion , health and personal choice ) would greatly influence the design and layout of a kitchen . Importance must be given to the type of materials , ingredients and mediums used as well as the appliances and working space required for that particular style of cooking . - A kitchen should be designed to match the preffered style of the individual user and the general ddécorof the rest of the house . It may be designed in a country / farmhouse , contemporary , colonial / english , laboratory , futuristic / high-tech , European / Mediterranean or ethnic style with matching decor and finishes . -A minimal , modular , straightlined , no-fuss work-area where the emphasis is on efficiency , workability and cleanliness . There are no wasted spaces and no unnecessary display of items or clutter . Most of the appliances are built-in and the
workareas are easy to maintain and clean . -According to the theory , an efficient and practical kitcen layout is one where ideally the three major elements : Sink/Washing area Refrigerator Cooking range are conviniently located so that the user can work and move about easily . The distance between the refrigerator , the cooking range and the washing area should not be less than 6 meters . This working should not be broken by full heights, fittments doors or passages . -The flooring , mostly used are mosaic, ceramic tiles, marbles.Stone flooring or ceramic tiles are recommended for Indian conditions, keeping in mind the surrounding dirt and dust since the material is impermeable , hard and stin / scratch resistant . -the walls in most kitchens are usually painted.Good qualityplastic emulsion paint for areas under the sink and near the wash area . -Cabinets are usually made of 19mm commercial block boards with laminate or enamel/duco paint . Bedroom - a place to unwind, let your hair down and put up your feet-all very casual and private activities. For all the time spent and the intimacy it demands,a bedroom takes very careful and detailed planning. Not because it is the most personal room in a house but because it is a room WHERE YOU DREAM !!! What is life without dreams??And what is a better place to dream in than your own bedroom? So that is what a bedroom really is-a place to rest and relax,to share a few quiet moments with yourself,to sleep away the weariness of a long, hard day. As the most private, personalised space in a home, the bedroom must necessarily reflect its user's lifestyle, his practical needs, aesthetic preferences and also his dreams, and this is exactly why a bedroom decor poses a challenge to interior designers. To design an ideal bedroom for a client, the designer must get to know the client's innermost thoughts and ideas, his cultural background and upbringing, his temperament and his personal conception of a dream bedroom;besides the more tangible factors such as his needs in terms of the storage space provided or his taste in terms of the colour scheme he would like best. All these diverse factors govern aesthetic decisions, which explains the high degree of subjectivity involved. That is why one cant really set up aesthetic byelaws;nor can these byelaws find an easy acceptance,if indeed they are made. The first thing to do when your home starts feeling cramped is to analyse the way you are using available space. All too often, there is too much unrequired furniture.Even clearing out stacks of old magazines, empty bottles and worn out clothes, will make you realise how much space you have and how incorrectly you have been using it. The basic principle of not breaking up a room into little bits is equally applicable to the floor. This is why a room with a wall-to- wall carpet looks much bigger than a one with rugs scattered all over. However, given the Indian climatic conditions, maintaining carpets and rugs requires a huge effort;and can only be
risked in airconditioned and dust free environment. The latest option is laminate flooring, and it does seem to have a lot of advantages, while also being aestetically appealing, and free from the hassles of ordinary wooden flooring. It should be noted that the same flooring sweeping through several rooms gives a better, more spacious effect. Lighting in a home must do more than dispel darkness. Most rooms benefit from a combination of functional and decorative lighting-relying on the former to set the scene and the latter to add interest. So every room must have primary as well as secondary lighting. The primary lighting fixtures(tubelights) are essential for daily household chores like cooking and reading;but for dramatic effects, shades and shadows, secondary lighting(spotlights, dimmers, uplighters)is extremely important. Bright colours and bold patterns advance and make up the space look smaller;while pale colours and small,all-over patterns recede, reflect light and make the space look bigger.Contrasting colours and textures in a room break it up into several different areas and make it seem smaller. The way a room is decorated has a major effect on how spacious it looks.Even though you have not actually pushed out the walls or raised the ceiling, you can use colour, texture and pattern to create that effect. The colours for walls and ceilings, the choice of flooring, the treatment of windows and design of the lighting system are all important aspects of decor. Also, there are a few other aspects specific to bedroom decor such as bedspreads, quilts and cushions which must be given due consideration. For centuries, sumptuous bedspreads, coverlets and quilts have been important elements of bedroom furnishing. These accessories should be seen as a part of the whole bedroom scheme.Cushions, although small, have the potential to pull a scheme together with accents of pattern or colour. Windows let in light and are usually a prominent focal point of the room.Decorative window treatments can lend style to rooms that have no distinct character of their own or accentuate architectural details that already exist.Curtains, which give life to any room , comes in unlimited colours, designs and fabric.Only the heaviest tapestries and weaves are unsuitable because of their weight and bulk. IDEAL BEDROOM The bedroom is usually a smaller room which can be seen in its entirety with just one glance, for this reason it is important •
that the furniture matches ,and if all the pieces are not the same style they should atleast have uniformity of colour and texture.
•
The walls and the lighting should be tenous and not be concentrated around the head board.
•
The essential function of the bed is to provide a surface which is neither too hard nor too soft for the back and body to response in the correct position.
•
Choosing the right mattress is also complicated as there are many dofferent types to choose from:foam, latex, spring, and combinetions ,with one side for summer and the other for winter, anti-allergy,traditional wool ones, and a sybaritic tendency to place several mattresses one on top of other ,one spring
and other latex. •
Wardrobes and beds are usually combined in the bedrom and are designed to make the most of the space available, they incorporate comfortable details such as doors which open with just a light touch and the indispensable interior lighting.
•
Wardrobes are usually from 1.90 to 2m high and 55cm deep and have interior steps for adjusting the shelves. If the wardrobe has only two doors it is a good idea to put mirrors on the inside to be able to see oneself from behind as well as the front.
•
When deciding how to finish the walls and the ceiling in the bedroom one must know the kind of atmosphere desired and how to maintain it.Normally it is recommended to paint the headboard wall a more outstanding colour than the other three which should all be the same relaxing ,warm colour. So if the furniture and the upholstery has already been chosen, the walls and ceiling should be their appropriate background.
•
Carpeted walls are another alternative for the bedroom which normally is considered when the floor is carpeted as well, very appropriate for colder, more humid climates for their insulation and warmth.
•
Bedroom lighting should have a special treatment, the tone of the light should be warm and cozy,to achieve this, apart from the ceiling light and the lamps on the night table, we recommend that the light intensity might also be adjustable. The regulator of light intensity, also called a dimmer,is a mechanism which permits, apart from the normal function of a light switch .gradual control of intensity of the light, allowing one to choose the exact level desired between the total lighting and the total darkness of the room.
•
Interior door frames should be as decorative as the doors, highlighting their design and quality. If the frame should expand or contract dua to wood's movement it will have to be carefully planed, checking the measurements regularly,re-hanging the door to check the progress untill it is correct, remembering that there should always be a little pay.
•
When decorating one's bedroom one usually mixes and matches coordinating fabrics,in the curtains, bedspreads, pillows, lampshades, headboards, walls, but avoiding overdoing it.
•
Whites and creams adapt to both classic and modern styles and are found in fabrics made of cotton, polyster, wool and embroidered linen.
•
Fabrics with a natural design create a bucolic atmosphere, with light lovely colours, with fabrics like cretonne, polyster and cotton chintz, silk, faille, teffeta.
•
One romantic finish is to cross two embroided muslin blinds held open with two wide velvet bands.
•
There is nothing better than a wooden rug to warm up a room, placing one at the end of the bed is not only a basic decoretive element but also an object which adds warmth, calm and intimacy. The choice of a rug depends primarily upon the floor, furniture, wals, upholstery, luminosity, space and if the bedroom has a specific decor, one will be obliged to choose a coordinating rug which is
essential to create the right atmosphere. •
Bedspreads, sheets, blankets, quilts, comforters, and pillows all enter into the play in the decoration of the bedroom. One need only know the decorative style and have bit of extra fabric to combine walls, curtains, canopies, headboards, lampshades etc.with the indispensable bedding.
•
The fabric is the body and soul of the bedroom set, such as jacquard, tapestry inspired, elegant and noble lines which shine through somber tones.
Bathrooms have come a long way from the tiny , dingy little cubiclesthat our ancestors rushed in and out of as fast as they could. Spending any thought or money on doing up these romms was considered a sheer waste untill very recently. The bathrooms of today are different in quality and style-ranging from the practical to luxurious. Every individual's idea of luxury differs,as do the features they would like to include in their bathrooms. The possibilities are endless:His and Hers washbasins, bidets, jacuzzis with underwater lighting and adjustable slide jets with an option of water, heated air or both, sauna, steam bath, whirlpool or a reading nook with bookshelves and two comfy chairs! Then there are bathrooms located in a secluded corner of the house beside a glass wall that brings the outdoors with in. Whereas earlier the sink,WC and bathing area were placed just where they fitted in conveniently, often resulting in the users having to traipse the length of the room to wash their hands, today a lot of thought is given to the placement of each fixture in the bathroom. Dressing walls in the bathroom is easier,as many material can be used.A simple look requires just a coat of paint or ceramic tiles. However, water as well as soap suds are bound to splash on the walls in the bathing area and if the material is not wellselected,it will leave ugly stains with the passage of the time.Lighting in the bathrooms give the whole space a well-lit look.Fluorescent tubelights are accepted as a rule, but a couple of bulbs fitted near the mirror would produce a clearer image.
The minimum fixtures in any bathroom are a WC,washbasin and shower/tap. But the tempting variety available today both in design and colour offer different combinations.Bathrooms are been given much more attention, particularly in size The budget allocated for decoration of bathrooms has also increased substantially. New and popular flooring options avaible today are more in terms of colour than any change in material used.Italian marble and ceramic tiles still hold the market, but the changes seen are in the colours and the ways of laying them.Basic earth shades are being mixed and contrasted with bolder shades to draw attention to the floor.Walls can also sport the new look of plain, patterned, embossed or marbled ceramic tiles which are offset by printed borders. A variety of WC's are now available in different shapes, flushing styles and the capacity of the flush-which ranges from 5 to 7.5 litres. Wall mounted WCs Re available in two options:standard and concealed flushing apparatus. Wash basins, with pedestals or fitted into a counter, come in a host of shapes- be it the standard one or the triangular shape that fits perfectly into a corner of the
bathroom and avoids wastage of space. Bathroom fixtures available in the market today have sleeker designs and come in a variety of power-coated colours of deep blue and vibrant red versus the chrome, black and ivory which were popular years ago.The designer taps may vary from a single tap to options like three tap hole basin mixers with pop-up systems and swivel spout mixers. Acrylic bath-tubs are now available in many shapes- from standard rectangular to the more unusual triangular,D-shape and the rounded variety.Readymade acrylic bath trays, another new enterant, come in the standard size of 3'X 3' or 4'x 2.3' in a square or rectangular shape.
Luxury options like jacuzzis are popular by means of those who can afford the steep rise, while shower cabinets find very few takers in the market today.Jacuzzis made of acrylic and reinforced with fibre- glass are available in designs.Saunas are popular because they help the excess fat in the body to melt away. Bathroom accessories are colour coordinated with the rest of the like the soap trays, bathroom shelves, towel rails,toilet-paper holders, hooks and toothbrush holder.Walk in wardrobes adjacent to the bathroom are also a common feature.A lot of stress is also laid on exhaust and fresh air fans. The colour schemes popular today are contrasts between a basic earthy shade like a fawn, beige or black, with a bolder colour like a deep maroon or forest green. If bathroom space permits, jacuzzis and bath tubs find their way in. Vastu is very prevalent here, and bathrooms are carefully planned accordingly- from where the WC is placed to the wall on which the mirror is hung.According to vastu, the bigger and better planned the bathroom, the more prosperous you will be. Current lifestyles often demand that bathrooms offer extra facilities beyond the purely functional.Besides the now mandatory closet storage,make-up table-cumdresser,washing machine or even a little nook used as a dressing space, you could find a bed or a dance floor in your private retreat next- depending,of course,on the space available. IDEAL BATHROOM The ideal bathroom is such which provides the essentials where you need it,when you need it. •
The ideal position of the bathing area would be one that allows you to step out of your bath on to dry ground.
•
Family size has an important role to play in the design and layout of bathrooms. The larger the family, the larger the bathroom in terms of square footage and storage space.
•
Plumbing fixtures should be comfortably spaced, with sorage facilities andfurnishings well arranged so that there is plenty of free space left for manoeuvring.
•
Tailoring the bathroom to suit the age requirements of all its users is sensible. If toddlers use the same bathroom as the adults, the towel stand could be fixed a little lower so that a child has easy access.
•
In situations where one bathroom has to be shared by four or more people, separating the
WC and the wash basin from the bathing area will allow two people to use different areas of the bathroom at the same time. •
A WC should be placed near a window or an outer wall,so that an exhaust fan can be fitted alongside.
•
The bathing area should be kept away from the windows to protect it from drought.
•
A dry and free area(unencumbered by fixtures) is needed to allow an adult to dry off and dress after bathing.
•
Floor should always be skid resistant variety.
•
A jacuzzi should ideally be fitted with its access panel and electric points under the flooring, directly below the tub.
•
Colour scheme should be according to the age factor. Women prefers soft colours and designs, while children's bathroom sport cartoon characters. The middle income groups there is a marked preferences for pastel shades. The trend shouldbe sober and not flashy.

1. If the marriage sector of your home is gloomy and badly lit, any relationships are likely to be sluggish and apathetic. One can increase the amount of light by opening blinds and curtains during the day. At night, keep this part of the house well lit, until you are ready for bed. 2. Crystals are effective way of attracting light into any area that you wish to activate. Thus marriage sector should always have attractive crystals for increasing the power of this sector. 3. There should be no CLUTTER in this area. CLUTTER has the effect of disrupting the smooth flow of ch'i through the house which cousequently causes problems. Many people are inclined to hoard things, just in case they need them again in future. Clutter can reveal itself in many different forms. Like, if you deposit your clothes all over the floor when you go to bed at night, you are effectively cluttering up the room for the next eight hours. Clothes restricts you and holds you back. If you are looking for a new relationship, you need to particulars attention to the clutter in your home. 4. Place something in this part of the house that relates to your personal element, or the one things which you think symbolises love to you. Like place the heart shaped glass wall hanging which was presented to you by your first love. 5. A dusty ornament or any entity which is not in use, when placed in the marriage sector indicates a tired, and lack luster relationship. Keep everything clean, fresh and sparkling and you will bring those qualities into your relationships. 6. The marriage sector should appear attractive and welcoming. It is a good idea to keep items of furniture and other objects in this location that you consider attractive. In this part of the house is appealing and welcoming, you will want to spend time here. By doing this, you will subconcousciously send positive energies out into the universe which will attract the right person to you.
7. Spend time in the Marriage Sector of your home. Think only pleasant thoughts when you are there. This part of the home should be an oasis of peace and tranquillity. 8. Do not spend time in the Marriage Sector when you are feeling unhappy, stressed or angry. We attract to us what we thing about. Consequently, this is a good area to sit in and think about the love and happiness that is coming to you. 9. If there is any problem in this Sector you feel depressed regarding all such matters, it is advised to use the following Feng Shui cures : - - A.BRIGHT OBJECTS :Mirrors, lights and crystals, especially lead glass crystals are examples. B.LIVING OBJCTS : Plants, flowers, ponds are quariums are good examples. Artificial replicas also serue the same purpose. Consiquently, artificial flowes, a ceramic animal, or a painting that depicts live animals and plants would act as an effective remedy. C.SOUNDS : Wind Chimes and bells that make pleasing sounds in the breeze are good examples. D.MOVING this category. E.HEAVY
OBJECTS : Mobiles, fountains, and fans are examples of objects in
OBJECTS : Boulders, large stones and statues are the examples.
F.HOLLOW OBJECTS : Flutes and wind chimes are good examples. (are should be taken than the wind chimes should always be hollow to allow the ch'i to rise inside them. G.COLORS : Colors, particularly when used in cunjunction with five elements make useful remedies. H.ELECTRICALS
OBJECTS : Streos, radios, television all create music.
I.INTUITION : We can sometimes be drawn to put a certain object in a particular place, without really knowing why. It pays to follow our intuition in this way, and use it to create effective remedies. Fortunately, there are a number of remedies that can be used to rectify this problem. Like placing a lamp on a pole in the garden in the position where the corner of the house would have been regular in shape. Hanging wind chimes and plant trees in this position is also one of the remedies. However it is not always possible to do this. If your home is an apartment, for instance, this position might be in the middle of your neighbour,s living room. Another remedy is to hang crystals in the windows of the two walls that mark off the missing Sectors. This has the effect of symbolically squaring off the house. If there are no windows on these walls, mirrors can be used. Mirrors are one of the most effectiv of Feng Shui remedies and, in this mistake, a large mirror should be placed on each wall. The mirrors reflect back what they capture and, in effect, make the
missing corner disappear. Mirrors should be as large as possible. Small mirrors symbolically cut off people,s heads and feet, so, generally spealsing, a large mirror is more effective from a Feng Shui point of view than a small one.
NUMEROLOGY There is certain connection between our apprehension of things as facts of experience and the cosmic laws which underline those facts. In the study of numbers, we are not concerned with figurelogy or mere symbolism, but with qualities and geometrical relations. This study has its principles, its alphabet, its language and terminology and its significance. There are only nine planets in our Solar System, also there are only nine numbers by which all our calculations on this earth are made. Beyond these nine numbers all the rest are just repititions as 10 is 1 plus 0 added. The final single number that remains is called SPIRIT OR SOUL NUMBER of all previous numbers added together.

NSPIRATION AND HAPPINESS THROUGH COLOURS Colour Theory offers a way to enhance nearly every aspect of our lives - improving our moods and stimulating our minds, increasing our effectiveness at work and in society and creating better physical and mental health. Colours affect various domains of our life - world, food, clothing, the living place, transportation, education and recreation. Wise arrangement of colour will help to increase their happiness, enhance their wealth, and faster their marital harmony. Colour inspires emotion. Colour structures our behavior. Pink and Green conveys vitality, Red symbolizes justice, WHITE represents pureness and Black denotes a sense of awe, grandeur and depth. No colour is universally is useful in all cultures for the maintenance of internal harmony within individuals and external harmony between them and nature. All permutations, from cosmic to atomic, resound in us and the force that links us with colour is energy or cosmic breath. Energy is the non-biological self , i.e., our spirit, our psyche, our essence. Without energy, we are nearly flesh and bones; Energy is the breath essential to maintaining physical, environmental, and emotional balance. In a sense, it is destiny, blue print of our personality, talent and life course. Colour also can harmonize and balance our energy and thus improve our life and destiny. For any form known to exist, it must possess colour and we know that out of the void of the Universe come all things. Harmony and balance are desirable in our physical and emotional makeup and in our environment. Out of the balance and harmonizing of positive and negative forces arises energy - the most essential feature of life and life and human energy is greatly affected by colour. Colour also indicates cardinal directions, seasons, the cyclical passage of time, and the internal organs of the human body. Colour is regarded as a manifestation of cosmic energy vitality that can also shape an individuals personal energy and therefore, their destiny. Adding a new colour to an environment can stimulate a positive or negative response. Colours describe emotional properties. We feel blue or green with any, red with shyness, describes someone as "a yellow-coward". The properties of colour are both emotional and physical. The direct impact of colour on our existence is easy to understand. Some colours make us happy, other colours make us sink into gloom, and some other relax, distract or energize us. Colour is a manifestation of light and energy, a good colour can depend on your mood of the day. If you select a colour that harmonizes with your energy then you will flourish. If the colour clashes with your mood, that colour will irritate you . Whatever we look upon and see through our eyes will, through our optic nerve, send sensory signals to our body, to react to what our eyes see. So the colours of everything our eyes come in contact will influence our temperament, physical movements, language and thoughts - in short, our lives".
Five elements of nature, i.e., Air, Fire, Earth, Water and Space are responsible for generating positive and negative energies. These five elements are not physical substances but powers or essences describing all matter and all attributes. These elements are also associated with colors, seasons, directions and organs. For example, the elements 'Fire' is associated with red, summer, the south, the heart. 'Earth' positioned at the center, stands for yellow, oranges, or brown, mid-autumn, etc. and the liver. 'Air' is blue autumn, north and the lungs and gall bladder it gets), winter, the west, and the kidneys. Space is shapeless, colourless and has North-East direction effects mind and cells. A rainbow sighted in the east indicates fine weather, while to the west it means rain. A red sky in the morning will foretell an afternoon shower, while a red sky at night will mean a clear sky. A halo around the moon indicates wind. These can be employed in all areas of our lives - the colours of homes, offices, clothes, food, even our cars as well as in adjusting our personalities and vitality. Its role is both determining good and bad, improving the luck of a site and residence in which we live. Following colours are, therefore, proposed for improving 'Vastu' of a building. 1)
Purple - Purple, deep red, or plum is an equally Auspicious colour. It is said to inspire respect.
2) Yellow-Yellow or gold stands for Power. Yellow gives a sense of tolerance, patience, and wisdom gained from past experience. 3)
Green - Green represents Tranquility, Hope, and Freshness. In plants and vegetation, green indicates good and healthy earth energies.
4)
Blue - Blue or indigo symbolizes Spring, New Growth, and Hope. However, blue is also a cold, secondary and mourning colour.
5)
Blue - Green - Blue - green mint, or aqua are more Auspicious than indigo as they are more closely aligned with the colours of nature and spring. In general, vitality represents verdant youth.
6)
Black - On the positive side, black - or any dark colour - gives a feeling of depth, both in mood and perspective. Yet black indicates a Lack of Hope, and it may make us feel "Dark" low and Depressed.
7)
Gray - Gray is an ambiguous - or gray area. To some, gray, like a dismal cloudy day, keynotes Frustration and Hopelessness .To other, it is positive and signifies Balance and the Resolution.
8)
Brown - Brown gives us a heavy feeling, the colour can be used to create a stable, established impression and a sense of the passage of time. It symbolizes the Depth and Elegancy..................
9)
Tan - Tan or caf represents a new, successful beginning. Out of seeming Hopelessness, a new possibility arises.
10) Orange - Orange, as a mixture of red and yellow and yellow, is Auspicious and is imbued with the characteristics of Happiness and Power. 11) Pink - Pink represents Love and Pure Feelings, Joy, Happiness, and Romance.
12) Peach - It is the colour representing Attraction and Love. EXTERIOR COLOURS OF HOUSE The colours of a house and the face it presents, should be uplifting. The effect of such colours on us is immediate and intuitive. The colour and condition of a house exterior can also affect its inhabitants.
EXTERIOR DECORATION THROUGH WINDOW - BOXES Exterior colour schemes need not be limited to outside walls and windows. The colour of window boxes is another element of a buildings faade. The best window box colour is one that has a creative relationship with casement colour. The colour of the box should always be different from that of the window casement.
OUR HOUSE - INTERIOR COLOUR SCHEME A general idea of appropriate colours have been given here to help enhance the specific room's atmosphere and use. BEDROOM - Pink is best for the master bedroom. Pink is also an auspicious colour. Light green and light blue are also fine for bedrooms, as they are colour of hope and cultivation. Plain white sheets or white sheets with flowers or colorful designs are fine. Pink or red sheets and blankets are used by those who want to get married as well as by newlyweds desirous of ensuring marital bliss. Yellow is fine for the elderly. For young children, education is important and therefore, green colour. Black is fine for furniture to encourage deep thoughts. LIVING ROOM- The living room should be full of May colours, shades, and patterns. As the place to entertain guests, the living room should be full of pleasant visual stimuli to keep the atmosphere and conversations lively and diverse. The best co ours are yellow, beige or tan, or green or blue. MEDITATION ROOM - If there is a meditation room, an austere setting is best : solid, calm, subdued colours, with no patterns. Subtle and deep shades of blue, green, yellow, or red will encourage deep concentration and thoughts. LIBRARY - The best colour, however, depends on the type of books that the residents like to read. If they prefer serious books, brown is an appropriate shade. For less serious readers, pale blue, light green or pink are good. DINING ROOM - Dining rooms, where the family eats and entertains, should be appetizingly colourful . Pinks, greens, and blues are best. Avoid black or white or a mixture of black and white. These colours are less conducive to enjoying eating. KITCHEN - In a kitchen, white is the best colour, it show off the colours of food, as if it were a blank canvas upon which the cook creates a meal of red tomatoes, green peppers, yellow squash. Besides it is also the colour of purity and cleanliness. BATH ROOM - It can be white or a mix of black and white or gray. Pink and other pastel colours are also good. COLOUR OF PUBLIC PLACES The colours of public places - parks, mountains, parkways, rest areas and gardens should be both lively and vibrant and arranged in ways we do not see normally. This enlivens our energy and increases our happiness and pleasure. In general, the best colour choices for a large
building such as skyscraper are white or coffee, gold or yellow, or earth coloured . The lower levels and base can be of white while the top floors can be green with red accents, suggesting the upper reaches of a tree laden with fruit, its good luck and prosperity. ROADS Roads and roadside colours are also important. Highways should ideally have <shoulders> and dividers with abundant greenery and flowers to keep the drivers mind stimulated and awake and generally to inspire. SCHOOLS AND BUSINESS Colours, full of life force - green, blue, bluish - purple, reddish - purple - stimulate the brain, providing access to energy. Such colours help them to work hard and concentrate. From ancient times to the present, the colour of nature have provided a calming and invigorating stimulus to our bodies and minds, enhancing our emotions, speech, and nervous system, the reds, blues, greens, yellows and whites of trees, flowers, and earth help to inspire and regenerate our energy. All colours of nature are highly evocative. Today, life is complicated and confusing, and our minds can become unsettled and weighed down by work, daily activities, and struggles. So we take vacations each year to rest and travel, to go to the mountains or seashore to regenerate ourselves. We need to see colours we do not normally see often, to bring balance to our minds and bodies and to stimulate our energy. This colourful change is, in a sense, enjoyment.
Pyramids Pyramids have been an integral part of the Egyptian and Mayan cultures. The ancient Vedas have references to Pyramid Geometry. Pyramid Geometric Energy has been used by most enlightened societies around the world. Temples, churches, mosques, and pagodas, have a Pyramid shaped structure atop. Temples have a `shikhar' Church has a steeple - Mosques and Pagodas have a cone shaped minaret or roof. `Shikhar', Steeple, and Minarets are essentially Pyramid Shapes. Cone is a Pyramid with innumerous sides (circle is made up of innumerous lines). Pyramid Geometry, attracts all available Energy Particles from its surrounding. Dome Geometry, stores the Energy Force Field. All religious buildings are built with Pyramid and Dome synthesis. When you enter any religious building, at once you are overwhelmed, by the unique, soothing environment. Pyramid has been found to exist in over 40 places around the globe including in the Himalayas. About 6,000 years ago, Egyptians were the first to use Pyramids for preserving dead body cells. Mayans used it for religious ceremonies. Our organizational structures are Pyramidal - One person at the top and the hierarchy expanding down the line. The Creation itself is in Pyramid Geometry:Before the Creational-Process began, there was only One Kinetic Energy - of The Supreme Creator (Universal Soul) - His pattern was Uni-Polar - Love being His
attribute (Inward Attraction) - Gravity is a reflection of this Uni-Polar energy pattern and each Energy System has it. At a lower level - a new energy pattern emerged - of Universal Mind - Desire being the attribute - the Uni-Polar Energy Pattern turned Bi-Polar at this level - Inward and Outward - Revolution and Rotation - Yin and Yang - Positive and Negative - our breathing (Prana), are reflections of this energy pattern. As a consequence of the emergence of bi-polar energy system, a third energy pattern spontaneously emerged - from the inter-action between Universal Soul and Universal Mind - like the intermediate pole of a Magnet - Bi-Polar energy pattern turned MultiPolar - Triguna - Sat - Raj - and Tam, are the attributes - the energy triangle (Trinity) is a reflection of this energy pattern. At a still lower level, each of the 3 Energy Patterns, emerged in 4 different forms (Infinite, Gasious, Fluid, and Solid Material Particles). Energy flow was now in 4 dimesions/directions - Swastika has its origin at this level. Love/Gravity being the Prime Energy at each level; the Prime Energy (symbolized by Agni), and the four energy-forms, are regarded as the 5 Sukshma (Subtle) tatvas viz Aakash, Vayu, Jal, Prithvi, and Agni; (Panch-Maha-Bhut) - 5 senses and 5 organs of action has its root at this level. Because of further spontaneous inter-actions between these energy patterns, 84 elements that constitute all animate and in-animate forms, colours, and existence; emerged in our Solar System. (Scientists say there are 105 elements of which 84 are stable - 21 are radio-active and cannot be found in nature) Pyramid Energy Force Field contains energy vibrations of all these Energy Particles. Man knew about the beneficial effects of Pyramid Energy System even 6,000 years back. This is evident from the use of Pyramid Geometric shapes in numerous structures viz Pyramids, Temples etc. and the use of geometric patterns like Swastika in the Rangoli made at the door step of every Indian household to ward off Negative Energies and create a Positive Energy environment at home and at work place. Ancient sciences and knowledge was consciously forsaken by man during the last about 80 years in the wake of Industrial Revolution which eventually brought about a new but somewhat irrational concept of forsaking all traditions and customs irrespective of their true merits. People around the world were quite irrationally led by the scientific, rational, powerful, and influential opinion leaders, to opt for only that which the Modern Scientists have verified and tested in their laboratories with their new and modern (always state of the art???) instruments. Public and the Government was made to believe that the Modern Medicine Industry was in reality, re-searching all ailments and drugs, very scientifically, in contrast with the ancient practices which were base-less - not being based on modern scientific evidence. Scientists across the globe have been awed by the sheer size of the Giza (Egypt) Pyramid - 450 feet tall - occupying 13 acres of land - using 2.6 million stones smallest stone weighing 2 tons - biggest stone weighing 70 tons
The main chamber of the Giza pyramid incorporates Pythagorean theorem. Plato in Timaeus has declared Pythagorean theorem to be the building block of the universe. Looking down the descending passage of the Giza pyramid, into a reflecting water tank, one could determine the speed of a star's orbit. This system is quite similar to the one used even today in our modern observatories. Scientists thought at one time, that mummification prevents decay of the dead body cells of the mummies kept within Pyramid Space. So why did the Egyptians create such an unusual and massive Pyramid structure to place the mummified bodies? And even more pertinent question was :- How did they create such a massive structure, 5,000 years back, without the modern day technology and equipments? Because all the engineers of the world today - together cannot re-create the Great Giza Pyramid - They neither have the technique or the equipment to do so. The scientists' attention has been therefore focused on these issues for the past 80 years. Many independent and state funded research programs have been going on. The Break-Through:Dr. Bovis (France) was involved in a similar research program and he saw (about 40 years back) a stray cat, which had died after entering the Pyramid. The cat's body was obviously NOT MUMMIFIED - and yet - he observed that its dead body was not decaying for weeks. He thought therefore, that some invisible Energy Field present within the Pyramid Space is preventing the decay of the dead body cells - by keeping the dead cells in perfect harmony. His path-breaking research revealed that all life forms and all matter, when placed within the Pyramid Space of a scale model, improved in performance, behavior, and appearance. e.g. Flowers grew better and faster within Pyramid Space as compared to out-side. Fruit and Food products had longer shelf life within Pyramid Space. Foods (coffee, fruit, etc) improved in taste and flavor when stored within Pyramid Space. A shaving blade stored within Pyramid Space could be used for 100 shaves as compared to an un-energized blade, which could not be used after 2 shaves. All dead animals placed within Pyramid Space did not decay for several weeks. Those who used his scale model Pyramid reported better sleep, improved meditation, reduced fatigue, relief in symptoms of aches and pains, asthma, etc. When the result of these experiments were presented to the world, thousands around the world began to research Pyramid Energy Systems. Pyramid Energy System, was found to have application in,
1. healing
2. agro-products to increase the yield and quality of crop; 3. Ionizing air particles for cleaner environment; 4. Energizing drinking water for better health and digestion; 5. Re-charging dry battery cells; 6. Polishing tarnished jewelry; 7. Relieving fatigue and tension; 8. Meditation; etc. Pyramid can be of any material size or shape. The selection will depend upon the purpose. e.g. If liver cells are to be healed then we need a Pyramid that has energy vibrations of healthy liver cells in such strength as to bring about healing of disharmonious liver cells within a reasonable time. For healing of liver the best material would be Gold. Wooden Pyramid will be best for Depression. Marble Pyramid will be best for Digestive System. Energy Frequencies can be manipulated by choosing Material, Size, Shape, and Colour as Energy Force Fields are a product of these four variables. Anyone can make Pyramids at home - millions have done it in the past 15 years all over the world. One needs to be careful in choosing the materials, size, shape, colour, and the place where it is made, and who makes it. Pyramid acts like an antenna. It captures geological, biological, and cosmic Energy Particles. So if the Energy Particles captured by the Pyramid happens to be Negative (weak) - then the Energy Force Field will be Negative. This is why proper knowledge of Pendulum Dowsing System is most essential before venturing into making of Pyramid Energy System. Energy Force Field of our home and work place will drain our bio-energy (physical and mental) if it is Negative. This will cause fatigue and tension dis-proportionate to our activity and situation. Over a period one will become tension prone, irritable, angry, and depressed. The decision making ability, inter-personal relations, and performance will become impaired. Such person will not enjoy life nor be at peace with himself despite having all material comforts of life. By placing appropriate Pyramid Energy System, the Energy Force Field of the land and building will be transformed into Positive (strong or healthy) and the person's bio-energy will now be supplemented instead of being depleted. So he will feel less fatigue and tension and will have surplus energy to meet the demands and pressures of daily work/life. As he will have surplus energy, he will be less agitated by problem situations. So less irritated - less angry - less depressed - over a period this leads to better decisions, harmony, inter-personal relations, performance. So more satisfaction in life/work leading to harmony and happiness.
People in Positive Energy Force Field get better sleep, live healthier life, are more satisfied, meditate better, have greater immunity against stress, fatigue, infection, and disease. Pyramid can be used by:keeping them underground simply placing them on the bed side table hanging two dimensional Pyramid Geometric Energy Patterns on any wall of your home or office or factory placing under the bed or inside your cupboard placing Pre-Energized 2 dimensional cards (like visiting cards) inside the shirt pocket or wallet or purse drinking water energized within Pre-Energized Copper Glass sticking Pre-Energized stickers on the TV, AC, Cars Tele-Therapy One can make a Pyramid at home for experimentation or education. There are Pyramid Kits available in many book stores. All you need to do is cut 4 pieces of card-board in triangular shapes. e.g. 3*3*3 inches on all 3 sides. Join the 4 pieces with cello-tape. Your Pyramid is ready. Paint it white or use a white card sheet. Take a pendulum and hold it over the Pyramid - if it moves clockwise the Energy Force Field is Positive. If it moves anti-clockwise the Energy Force Field is Negative. This Pyramid will be good for meditation - provided that the Energy Force Field of the place where it is built is Positive. Else it may aggravate problems. One can use a Pendulum to determine whether the Energy Force Field of a place is Positive or Negative. Aagney - It is the lord of fire , and is positioned in the South-East direction. Aap - Means water , which is one of the five elements that constituent our universe. Aakash - Means Space , which is another element that constitutes our universe. Aura - It is defined as a luminous radiation , a radiant light around a person's head or body. The different colours appearing in the aura have been studied by physics , and various tints of each colour suggest different characterstics. Atman - The individual consciousness. Brahma - The creator of the universe. Istaka - The brick , as known in the Vedic times. Jiva - the soul.
Kalpadruma - The wishing tree. Purusha - The consciousness, the life source. Parmataman - The universal consciousness. Prana - The life. Prakriti - The nature. Samadhi ( Sthiti) - To sit with folded legs on the ground in one posture for meditation. Shankh - The counch , a sea shell through which the sound is produced and is mostly used in religious ceremonies. Shrishti - Creation of the entire universe. Sthapati - The architect , as known in the Vedic times. Sutregrahi - The draughtsman , as known in the Vedic times. Takshaka - The carpenter , as known in the Vedic times. Vardhaki - The mason , as known in the Vedic times. CONSTRUCTION OF RESIDENTIAL BUILDING
Which room should be constructed in which direction, if this is not kept in mind while planning a house, the whole building may go against the principles Vastu Shastra and it will create lot of troubles causing irreparable harms and loss to the owner / inmates.
SOME OTHER RELATED TOPICS Doors of each room should be facing East.
2. Bedrooms should be in South and West. 3. Placement of mirrors on South and West wall are inauspicious. 4. While sleeping head should be in South or West but never in North. 5. Pooja room should be in North East. All idols and photographs should be facing East or West.
6. Toilet seat should be in North-South only. It should not be in East-West. 7. Out houses should not touch the compound wall of North and East side. 8. Stairs should always be in clock-wise direction. 9. Anything underground should be in North or East. 10. Anything above ground should be in South or West.
1:2. It should not exceed 1:2 in all circumstances. The building dimension should preferably be longer in North-South, shorter in East-West. GROUND LEVEL : Ground level should be higher in West, SouthWest and South as compaired to East, North and NorthEast. It is better to keep NorthEast the lowest. FLOOR LEVEL : Floor level should be higher in South, SouthWest, SouthEast and Western portion and lower in North, NorthEast and East. The water should flow towards East or North and not in other directions. Central zone should be even. ROOFING: It is better to keep roofing sloping towards East and North. SLOPY ROOFS / SLANTING ROOFS : Now a days it has become a fashion to keep roofs deeply slopy : (1.) Keeping the roofs slopy symmetrically in all sides : or (2.) If the slope is on East or North sides only, keeping the East or North or both sides down. The idea is to keep South and West heights in level. Slanting towards South or West only should be avoided as that will lead to serious health problems. BUILDING HEIGHT : There are two options : (1.) Height can be equal every where in the building. (2.) Keeping South, SouthWest and West higher as compared to other parts of the building. Conversely North, NorthEast and East should be lower in heights. TERRACE / PORTICO / PORCH / BALCONIES : All these should be located only in North, East and NorthEast sides of the building to bring health, wealth and happiness. Balconies should face North and East.
MEZZANINE FLOOR : ( a projected floor in between ground and first floor as seen in Cinema theatres) This should be placed in West or South side of the building. CELLARS / BASEMENT : Normally building cellars and basement rooms etc. below the road level of a house should be avoided. Due to paucity of space now a days building cellars or basement
is being widely adopted. Care should be taken to keep the height of the cellar or basement projecting up above the road level to some extent. Cellars or basement covering the entire plot is all right. If it is to be constructed only in a portion of basement it should be located only in North, NorthEast and East sides preferably with entrance from NorthEast. If constructed on SouthWest that should be used for heavy storage. NorthWest and SouthWest portion should be used for servants, car parking etc. If cellars or basement are built in South, SouthWest and West and used for living that will create mental tension and loss of wealth for inmates. STAIR CASE: Placing stair case in North or West zone turning right in the middle and emerging in the first floor facing East or South or SouthWest zone is also auspicious. While climbing one should face West or South up to middle point and after that one can face any direction; emerging at the end at NorthEast portion is considered auspicious. It will be auspicious to keep doors both at beginning and at the end of the stair case. It is also essential to ensure that the stair case does not touch Eastern or Northern wall. The steps should be in odd numbers like 11, 17, 23 etc. In other words, if the number is divided by 3, the remainder. SERVANT QUARTERS : The best place to construct servant quarter is South-East or North-West corners. Care should be taken to ensure (i) not to block the corners at SouthEast or NorthWest. (ii) the quarters should not touch the walls on East or North. GARAGE FOR CARS: The best place for garage is South-East or North-West and the garage walls should not touch the walls on East or North. CHOWKI OR SECURITY CABIN OR GUARD'S ROOM : A regular concrete shelter or alternatively a wooden chowki is made in South-West or other place near main gate. The shelter should be facing East or North. It is important to ensure that the watchman can easily see every movement from a distance itself. OVER HEAD TANKS: North-West or South-West zones are the right places for overhead tank. Since it is of having weight at a height, South-West is the best. Precaution should be taken to ensure that the overhead tank does not touch the main building. UNDER GROUND RESERVIOR OR WATER TANK : The right place for underground reservior or water tank is the NorthEast, the place of Eshwar, the God Supreme. The next choice is East Zone on the Northern side. SWIMMING POOL :
The best place to locate a swimming pool is the NorthEast side. It is better to build the swimming pool in a corner ( and not exactly at junction of North and East points ) where privacy is ensured. WATER CLOSETS OR LAVATORY : For this Southern or Western side should be used. South-West or North-West corners and central place of the house or building should never be used for this purpose. If possible Eastern and Northern side should also be avoided. The person sitting in water closets should face North or South or South-West and never the East Direction. TREES : Vastu concepts regarding the plants and their plantation must be kept in mind so as to make your home not just superficially beautiful, but also Vastu oriented. As a general rule, gardens in homes or factories should always be in the North or West and of the compound. The South-East and South-West are not to be selected for any kind of garden or plantation. Fruit bearing trees or trees with good foliage are always preferred to thorny trees. Care should be taken not to grow trees which have huge penetrating roots as it can prove harmful for the house. OUTER GATES : Generally gates in North, North-East and East directions are auspicious and good. Roadfacing South is not generally preferred. In South road plots, SouthWest gate should be avoided. South-East gate is a better choice. In a plot facing West (road on Western side) SouthWest main entrance gate should be avoided; NorthWest gate is a better option. East or North direction is the best for placing main gate. HEIGHT : Height of the building should be uniform to get the most advantageous results. There must be uniformity among projections or elevations. The higher or lower level of the building in any of the eight directionshas the following effects as given in Shastras :
DIRECTION 1. North 2. NorthEast 3. SouthEast
4. East 5. South
LOWER Brings good, comfort and prosperity All prosperity benefits If lower than Nairitya, it is auspicious, but if lower than Vayaya or Eeshan, fear of fire and enemy and breeds ill. Name and fame, long life Diseases, loss of wealth and brings economic difficulties
HIGHER Harmful in every sense Poverty and sufferings If higher than Nairitya, it is inauspicious, if higher than Eeshan or Vayaya, it brings wealth.
Loss of children Economic and health benefits
HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR FORTUNE BY PROPER LAYOUT OF YOUR OFFICE First of all an ideal site, free from any of Vastu defects should be selected. After selecting the site, in designing a lay-out for industry and providing for utilities special attention should be paid for the following aspects :
1. The sloping of floors should be towards East, North and North-East, More
Why and how to follow Vastu - I Our sages and saints in India always wanted to ensure happiness and prosperity not only to mankind , but to everything living being in this world. Nowadays we hear a lot about the importance of ecology , pollution – free environment , nature and all in big seminars and conferences. Our ancestors knew the secret of how to live in perfect harmony with nature and enjoy all that it bestows in plenty for the upliftment of mankind. According to Mayamatam , vaastu is used to designate dwelling or buildings and both the terms appear in the list of synonyms . Vaastu as a legend in Matsya purana , was born out of the sweat of Lord shiva , while fighting and killing a giant called "Andhkasur" . A spirit originated out of the perspiration of Lord Shiva and consumed all the blood from the body of the devil. His hunger was still not satisfied. He then undertook penance. Lord Shiva was impressed and highly satisfied by his penance and offered him a boon.: " Who ever constructs building on Earth shall offer pooja (worship) to him and make offerings if they want to enjoy health , wealth , wisdom and prosperity in their new building. However only those people who do not offer you prayers shall be at your mercy and you may trouble them in anyway. There is a possibility that these stories were added in the olden scripts only to scare people and make them conscious about the subject. The science of vaastushastra is however no mythological story and has stood the test of time for thousands of years. Vaastu Shilpa is divided into two parts : (1) Deva Shilpa : It deals with all aspects of temple and religious activities including idol , yagna etc. (2) Manav Shilpa : It deals with houses , residential buildings , schools , commercial buildings etc. The transmission of the knowledge had to take a corresponding form and integrate all the sciences as one seamless discipline. It is for this reason that the Sthapati or vastushilpi , the priest architect had to undergo a process of integrated learning. To this day , the Sthapatis take recourse to the collective knowledge of related discipline as to give shape to their creations. To understand vaastu , one should understand the VASTU PURUSHA MANDALA . Purusha and Mandala are associated with vaastu (site) . Vastu encompasses the house with the site and its environment. According to the Vedic thought , Purusha is not only the cause and life behind all prakriti , but also behind all creations of Man. Purusha is consciousness , the life source. It is also called atman. The Vastupurusha Mandala is a grid of square , regarded as a perfect figure , is conceived to be a fundamental form in architecture and all other shapes are derived from it. The Vastupurusha Mandala offered the formula to determine the functions of the building in relation to its orientation. The Vasturatnakara assigns specific functions to each direction. The south-east for example , is dedicated to fire and north-east to the element Water. Invariably , the correspondence with the elements would determine the position of the rooms in the house. The space assigned to the region of fire , for instance , would be used for building a kitchen or reserved as a source for heat and warmth. The Mandala also served as a guide to locate the buildings on site and determining the position of the shrines in a temple complex. The factors to be considered while designing the exteriors Whenever we buy a plot, the first thing that is done is to prepare a site plan for the approval of competent authority before preparing the building plan. Once it is approved, one goes for the building plan. For each type of building the requirements
are different ass prescribed by developmental authorities, but Vaastu shastra apply the same basic principles to all the buildings used by humans whether it is a house, office or shopping complex. Here one has to meet the requirements of the Vaastu as well as the authority to make a building plan. So here are some points which one should always consider before designing the plan. The open space around the building: We have to carefully examine the space given to us around the building and make sure that you are leaving the maximum space in North and East side and less on South and West sides. The construction should never be on the Northern and eastern wall as this violates the basic principle of Vastu. The left area in North should not be less compared to the open area left in the South as this is very bad according to Vaastu so one must correct it defect before developing this plan. The proportion: The ratio between the length and breadth of the building should normally be 1:1 or 1:1.5 or maximum up to 1:2, it should never exceed this limit in any circumstance, otherwise it will become a ‘long bar’ shaped plot and is not at all auspicious for anyone. The building dimension should preferably be longer in North – South and shorter in East – West. The Levels: At any level, whether Ground level or First level, the West, South, South – West sides should be more elevated than the North, North – East and East sides. Basically the flow of water should always be from the South to North or West to East as it creates a lot of positive energies. Roofing: The roofing slope should always be towards East and North so that the water always flows towards the North and East. Nowadays, it’s a fashion to keep the roof sloppy, for that one must always be careful to make the slopes in north and east sides. Slanting towards South or West should be avoided as it causes serious health problems. The height: The height is another criteria, which in one way again related to weight. The height either be kept equal everywhere in the building or it will be preferred to keep the South and West higher than the North and East as the South, West sides will automatically gets heavier and this is very auspicious. But never keep the North and east sides at more heights than the South, West. Terrace / Porch / Portico / Balcony: All these should always be located in the North, East or North – East sides of the building to bring the health, wealth and happiness. The balconies should always face the North, East or north – East. The factors to be considered while designing the exteriors - II Compound wall: The compound is the wall that covers the boundary of the house. The compound wall either should be of same height and thickness in all the four sides or it will be best if it is thicker and taller in Southern and Western sides as compared to the Northern and Eastern sides. This is preferred as the thick wall of the South and West sides will prevent the Infrared rays of the afternoon sun and the setting rays of the sun, which are harmful for the humans. Light walls in North and East sides will allow the beneficial morning rays to come and penetrate in the house, they are full of Vitamin D and are the only source of obtaining it. This way the South and West sides will also become heavier than the rest which is very auspicious. Garage / Out house: The best place to construct them is the North – West and South – East corner and care should be taken not to block or cut the corners at the
South – East or North – West and the quarter walls should not touch the wall at the East or North side. Guard’s room: A concrete or wooden shelter is made either in South – West and the shelter should be facing the East or North but it is important to ensure that the watchman is able to see every movement. Over – head tanks: These tanks should be placed either in North – East as water is considered good in this direction, or in South – West as the tank becomes very heavy. North – East is not to be over loaded with overhead tank though water in North – East is considered very good. Under – ground reservoir: It should always in the North – East, the place of God supreme and should never be in South – East. Another choice is East or the North zone. Well / Bore – Well / Tube – Well: These should be placed in North – East or eastern sides preferably in between the mid North and North – East as it bring all round prosperity and new opportunities for growth. Thus, if we consider all these points, we will never make a mistake to design a house which is against Vaastu and then the people will stop suffering from the defects of Vaastu. Know more about your paints Paint has been used for centuries to decorate all kinds of homes and in that time a huge variety of finishes and effects have been employed beyond the flat coverage of a simply painted surface. Many of what are now regarded as traditional paint effects have their origins in the great houses of the European aristocracy and were later adopted by the rising merchant classes who wanted to share in those splendours themselves. Paint effects are a wonderful way to express your character and that of your home and the people who live with you. Transformation , illusion , or more frankly deception , was usually the guiding principle , whether the effect was one of rough stone , luxurious marbling or the opulence of gliding. As early as the fourteen century , for example the art of gliding – applying thin layers of gold to surfaces such as wood or plaster , became an immensely popular way of imitating the real gold decoration that only the richest could effort. Wood graining , for example , allowed people to enjoy the beauty and elegance of expensive woods without the cost , as the finishes were applied over cheaper timber. Today great houses may have the best preserved examples of traditional paint finishes , but there are other good examples of wonderful effects in much simpler public buildings , in homes or apartment. For example , the colour blue-grey represents the traditional Scandinavian interior , the dazzling blues , soft pinks and warm ochres that outface the Mediterranean sun and the sober tones remind of the interiors of United states. These are styles and finishes firmly rooted in the often harsh climate and economic or social realities of a particular region , perpetuated over centuries by people whom the concept of style has often , for one good reason or another , been meaningless. Many of the materials used in the past are still available and experts working on great old buildings and antique furniture undertake restoration work using the same equipment and techniques. Materials of today are less toxic and many are available in a wider range of colours , they offer an attractive alternative. Painting walls has
often had greater significance than the simple imperatives of domestic decoration and display. Many ancient civilisations decorated the insides and outsides of their temples and state and public buildings with paint. Choosing the colour and finish for the walls is probably the most important decision you make when decorating a room. The paint should reflect the character of those who live and work there and the atmosphere they want to create. However , daring to try something new is fun and may reveal a new side of you , the possibilities are endless. Creating the right wall finish for a period interior was once time consuming and expensive. Today successful substitutes have been found for the unusual and expensive products required using the different permutations and combinations , one can easily reproduce the interiors with an authentic look. Any style of interior is now within your range – from a country kitchen to a baronial hallway. Paint techniques can also be used to disguise some surface imperfections , which is much cheaper than having your walls replastered. Thus , one should always consider the following tips while doing the paint . •
A poor surface treated with the right paint technique can be transformed into a wall of character. Equally , a perfectly smooth new wall can be given instant interest and texture.
•
Each room must be treated individually , even though you may want a cohesive scheme throughout your home.
•
Remember some areas suffer extra wear and tear : certain finishes may not be practical for kitchens or bathrooms , and others need special attraction.
•
Always choose the colour according to the space. Pale colours give a sense of space and darker ones make a room even smaller.
•
Remember too that the colour of the base coat will greatly alter the glaze coat applied to it. The most striking colour effects are often achieved by using white as the base colour.
Know more about your paints - II Here are some of the effects of the paints that one can create apart from the flat surface , but one should be aware of the effect , one desire to create. COLORWASHING : Colorwashing is among the group of finishes that have their beginings in fine are, they are often known as broken-color technique. Specifically , it involves the application of thin washes of glaze in which the brush marks are left apparent to give the finish texture and depth. It provides an interesting alternative to flat color and can be used to decorate period or modern , town or country interiors SPONGING : Sponging is a modern broken-color techniques. Natural sponge , moistened with water or soaked in glaze and used over the opaque base coat to produce a softly mottled effect–either by removing or adding color. Usage of sea sponge create more interesting textures that normal household sponge. STIPLING : Traditionally stippling entails the reworking of newly applied paint to create a finely textured , matt finish. A well prepared surface is essential and a steady hand. An elegant effect which adds subtle ageing to a room , it looks good on
wood panelling , furniture and frames. DRY BRUSHING : In this technique , the brush is kept relatively dry as glaze is applied lightly over a base coat to create a cloudy effect. It can be subtle if applied in soft tones with soft strokes or bold if you use hard bristed brushes and strong colors. An easy way to give texture to modern interiors , it is also used to create an aged finish for period settings. It is ideal for highlighting architectural mouldings and because it is extremely resilient , for furniture. MEDITERRANEAN LOOK : The word mediterranean gives us a impact of wonderful chalky colors of sunbaked , painted house. It gives a very country look kind of the atmosphere. Random brushing and hard rubbing create the characteristic roughness and depth of tone. It can be used on a variety of surface but is natural suited to uneven plaster and textured surfaces. TEXTURING : There are many different ways to texture paints. The obvious advantage of texturing is that it is a wonderful disguise for imperfect wall. But it can bring character to any surface , or a tough finish to a garden room or exterior wall. WOOD FINISHES : Paint finishes on wood can be as authentic and fantastic as you wish. Color is the determining factor but with today’s wide choice of colors , the scope for experiment is enormous. Paint effects can also ‘age’ new wood quickly. This is a important period setting , where new wood is often ill at ease. Stairs , handrails , floors and frames can also be aged to add a period feel to any home. BORDERS : Borders are nowadays becoming very common and people are having a keen interest in them. Painted borders are a neglected way of bringing additional interest to wall surfaces. Borders painted by hand are essentially individual .One can choose color and patterns one wants and can make them as simple or as complex. Know more about the Kitchens There is a saying goes that "To way to a man’s heart is through is stomach" , so kitchen is the only place from where one can win anyone’s heart. For a house wife , this is a place where she has to spend the maximum of the time and for a working woman , it should be so that, she feels fresh as she enters the kitchen, tired . Every family has different expectation of their kitchens as they follow different cultures. While the basic function of the kitchen is to serve as an area for the preparation of the food , the need of each individual household differ and often the kitchen has to cater to additional and varying requirements. A kitchen layout should be customized to the specific requirements and needs of the users . Hence , it is important to ascertain the individual preferences overall lifestyle and eating habits of the direct users . There are various practical points that must be considered and discussed before commencing the designing of a new kitchen or the modification of an existing one . •
DESIGNING : Before designing the kitchen , one should identify the tasks to
be performed in the kitchen. A kitchen should be designed to match the preferred style of the individual user and the general décor of the rest of the house . It may be designed in a country / farmhouse , contemporary , colonial / English , laboratory , futuristic / high-tech , European / Mediterranean or ethnic style with matching decor and finishes . •
PLANNING : Kitchen planning revolves around the three main work centers – storage , washing and cooking. These form three corners of the triangle . These centers should be connected with the work counters. The work pattern generally moves from the décor to the functional flow of traffic in the kitchen.
•
STORAGE : The most important aspect of the kitchen design is a well planned storage. It can facilitate or impede the main task of cooking and keep the kitchen either tidy or a mess at the end of the day. Storage units have a variety of internal arrangements and dimensions to suit the items they are going to contain.
•
FLOORING : Flooring should be non slippery , resilient , hard wearing and easy to clean. Marble is the most common choice but one can also go for Kotah stone too. Granite tends to be slippery when wet.
•
LIGHTING : Kitchen lighting should be bright and functional . Care should be taken to ensure that the light does not cast shadow on the major working areas. Light fitted on the underside of the overhead cabinets light up the counters effectively.
•
VENTILATION : Ventilation is the most important aspect that should be taken care of properly. Kitchen is a area which generates lot of odour and smoke , thus this has to immediately emmitted out. An exhaust fan is a considerable help in dispelling smell and for air circulation also.
•
The hob also has a central position with a canopy formed by its hood which destroys odours and fills the ambience with light at the same time . The electrical appliances are carefully concealed beneath the worktop . Function and harmony should be the dominating characteristics of the present collections.
•
Kitchen walls should be able to withstand all kinds of fumes and splashes. The walls in most kitchens are usually painted. Good quality plastic emulsion paint for areas under the sink and near the wash area.
•
The sink plays an important role in overall efficiency of the kitchen , linking cooking accessories . Even if you have a dish washer , a roomy , easy to clean sink is still essential .
•
The counter top is the most wear tear area. Materials such as stones , glazed enamel tiles , stainless steel , laminates can be used for counters and each has its own pros and cons.
Thus , the basic concept is to finish this ambience which is the most lived in the entire family with the aim of making it a place in which it is pleasing to be together . To create , therefore , a little domestic paradise in which several people , all there together will find it easy to move about among extremely functional articles . There is no need for large spaces , but it is attractive and welcoming , perfectly in tune with the surroundings with the reminder and exaltation of stories , traditions and
rediscovered family values. How to manage the interiors with vastu - I The stone of Vaastu is to make us live in harmony with nature taking advantage of the magnetic fields, gravitational effects etc. of the earth, the rainfall, the galaxy and the whole of the nature and the universe and duly invoking the blessing of the Gods of the directions. Doing interiors with the Vaastu is a bit difficult job but if everything is planned carefully, one can open the doors of the prosperity for themselves. Now we will discuss every room in the detail. Every room has their eight directions again, so one must be aware of the facts how to design the rooms. Worship / Pooja Room: It has been known the Pooja room is best suitable in the North - East corner of the house, now Pooja room has its own directions. The deity should face West, can face East or North but it should NEVER face South. North East zone is considered most appropriate for worship for another reason also. In the morning the sun’s rays straight fall on North - East Side of the house which is most auspicious and good for health. It keeps our mind fresh and the soul pure and clean a thing needed utmost for real prayer. Placing pooja room in the North - East will bring all the happiness, prosperity, monetary gain, health, wealth, peace of mind and happiness with the blessings of God. Bed Room: After the day long toil and turmoil every living being earnestly require rest; for that only the nature has endowed us with day and night. For the bedroom, south - West is best for the master bedroom. Generally the eldest sleeps in the South - West room, the elderly in the South - Eastern room, the next in the North - West room and only the children should sleep in the North - Eastern room but not the couple. Now there are some points, which one should always remember: The bed should be located in the middle of the room or should be in the South West corner of the room. The idea is to keep moving space around the bed and if vaastu is taken care of, South - West becomes heavy as we put the heaviest bed their. Bed should not touch North or east walls, but may touch South or West walls when we keep our heads towards South or west for sleep. A shelf of books may be kept in South - West or West Side of the room. A reading table with chair may also be kept in this corner of the room. If there are some T.V or electrical equipment, they should be placed in the South East corner of the room. Now the biggest question is why not sleep legs facing towards SOUTH? This is the most common question that the Vaastukaars face nowadays. I have seen most people had a misconception in their mind that you should not sleep facing the lags towards South as south is not a good direction and it causes ill effects. But this is the biggest myth, no direction is bad, there is a scientific reason for not sleeping with legs towards South. The thing is ONE SHOULD NOT SLEEP FACING THE HEAD TOWARDS NORTH. We all know that all of the body, the head is the heaviest and consists of all the iron and other elements. The North direction has an ill effect on the blood circulation and the organs of the body, which are away from the brain, will not get sufficient blood resulting in headache, irritation, insomnia. How to manage the interiors with vastu - II Bath Room with W.C: As we have already discussed that bathroom should be either in the South - West direction or the North - West but should never be in the North - East corner of the house. Now if we come to the bathroom layout, following things must be considered: -
•
Now the bathroom will also have a North - East corner, in this corner either a shower or a floor trap should be placed. One must make it a point not to make a W.C in North - East corner of the bathroom, as there is no remedy for it.
•
Mirror should always be on the East wall.
•
W.C should always be on the North - West Side and facing East.
•
The dirty linens should be placed in the West Side of the bathroom as setting rays are very harmful for bacteria and kill them.
•
If there is almirah, it should always be on the South - West Side of the bathroom.
•
The geysers, heaters and all other electrical equipment should be installed in the South - East corner.
•
The entrance of the bathroom should preferably in North or East.
Kitchen: The best location for the kitchen is the South - East corner. When the entrance of the house is from east or South, then the kitchen may be shifted to the North - West corner of the house. In the layout of the kitchen, following rules should be followed: •
The cooking platform should be towards eastern sidewall of the kitchen, as good results can be achieved when one faces east while cooking.
•
The sink should be in the North - East corner of the kitchen.
•
The slope of the water flow should be from South - West towards North - East.
•
The cylinder should be placed in the South - east corner.
•
The Geyser should be installed either in the South - East corner or the South wall.
•
The electronic gadgets should be placed on the Southern platform.
•
The storage for all the food grains, utensils, the over head almirah should always be on the Southern and the western walls and not on the Northern and the Eastern walls.
•
The fridge should be in placed in the North - West corner of the kitchen
•
The exhaust fan should be installed either in the North - West corner or the South wall.
(1) HOW TO CHOOSE A PLOT One should be very careful before taking any decision. Some basic points I have already told , now the main things that one should consider are (1) Orientation of plot (2) Four side angles of the plot in respect to orientation.
•
The length of the plot should be more in North-South direction as compared to East-West direction.
•
If all the corner angles of plot are 90 degrees , it is a good plot.
•
A plot with all corners 90 degrees having two sides road front and back is a good plot.
•
A plot with four corners having 90 degrees angles with three sides of four sides road is a very good plot.
•
If the house is projected in any of the either directions , then one should always consider the following rules. The North/East projection is good and is recommended.
•
The South/East , South/West and North/West projections are not the good sites and are not recommended according to vastu but if one has already has this kind of plot , it can be corrected.
•
If you are seeing the plot which is cut on either direction , then it is not recommended.
•
Now if the plot angles are not at 90 degree , be sure about it whether it is ‘shermukha plot’ or ‘gowmukha plot’. The shermukha plot is one which has a broader entrance and it becomes narrower as we go in. It is NOT at all recommended for the residence.
•
The gowmukha plot is one which is narrower at the entrance and becomes broader as we go in. It is very auspicious.
(2) HOW TO CHOOSE A PLOT Vastu , is like the astrology , is a vast science and its not possible for a normal human being to understand it fully ,but one should always consider some basic rules of Vastu. If you are looking for a plot , keep these things in mind. All the four directions , hills , water bodies , cremation places , highways etc , they all influence the Vastu of the place in one way or other. There are some important factors that you should always consider while looking for a plot. Whenever possible one should always try to follow the Vastu principles as violation of these principles does destroy the happiness of one’s life. You should never purchase the land from the following persons as the atmosphere of the particular space depends on the people living there. •
From people suffering from sickness , lunatics.
•
From people who have become insolvent.
•
Land donated to any religious place.
•
Land without any deed.
•
From people who have left the country.
•
The place where magicians used to live.
•
Land containing ant-hills , bones , skeletons.
•
Houses sold by distressed , unfortunate people.
Considering the color , smell , taste and texture of the soil , it is categorized into following : •
The soil white in color , having lotus smell and sweet taste and that contain greenery is good for the learned people and teachers.
•
The soil red in color , smelling blood and astringent in taste is good for Warrior class.
•
The soil yellow/pale green in color , grainish smell and sour taste is good for the Business class people.
•
The soil black in color , having pungent small and bitter taste is good for the lower or backward working class.
Usually people believe that South facing plot is not good ,this and that these are all myths ,it entirely depends upon the full orientation ,. The entrance of the house depends on the zodiac sign of the owner. It is as follows. Kark ( Cancer) Virchak (Scorpio ) Meen (Pisces) Mithun (Gemini) Kanya ( Virgo) Makar ( Capricorn ) Rishab ( Taurus) Tula (Libra) Kumbh ( Aquarius) Mesh ( Aries) Singh (Leo) Dhanu ( Saggitarius)
1.
2.
3.
4.
EAST facing plot
SOUTH facing plot
WEST facing plot
NORTH facing plot
This zodiac sign principle is followed by many vastukaars but it is desirable to fix main door or gate in favourable position instead of following Zodiac sign of owner , as the house will be occupied by his descendents also for generations. (3) STUDENTS : TIPS FOR ATTAINING A BETTER RESULT This is a academic week as now coming the TEACHER’S DAY……. So why not to give some tips to the students who are very bright but are not able to explore themselves fully .Many a times students complain that they are not able to concentrate , learn or retain what they have read .The remedy to these problems was formulated by our ancestors in the form of the directional science of Vaastu Shastra .For students eager to do well , here are a few techniques , following which the students can achieve success in their studies and obviously bring about a positive changes in grade and will come off with flying colors. •
The room to be chosen for study should be in the east ,North or the NorthEast direction of the house. These directions improve the absorption power and increase the knowledge content. Along with that if the door of the room is also in either of these directions , the result turns out to be the best.
•
The study room should have images of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Saraswati.
east direction bears heavy weight it shall pressurize the students’ mind. •
Furthermore , if the student studies on the table and chair , the table should not stick to the wall .It should be at least 3 feet away from it . Along with that unnecessary books should not be piled up on the table . Only the books which are needed should be kept on the table. Load of books on the table create unnecessary mental pressure on the mind .The study books should be placed in the cupboard in the cabinet rather than in the open .And if the shutter of the cupboard is kept shut , the flow of energy is constantly maintained.
•
If the learner makes use of the Table lamp then the lamp should be kept in the South-East corner of the desk. Plus if it is a square table then nothing like it. Further the size of the study table should not be too big nor too small. It should be just the size which is comfortable for the working of the student. A big sized table diminishes the working capacity , whereas the small table gives rise to depression.
•
Moreover , if possible , the walls of the study room should be light orange in color as it is very auspicious and enhances the wishing power as well as supports the speedy progress of mind.
•
Along with that , at the same time of study , the learner should use a pyramid cape as it proves to be extremely beneficial . Not only that it embellishes the remembering power and absorption.
•
The student should ensure that after studying when they go off to sleep , their head is in the South direction . It helps in maintaining the magnetic balance of the body and the earth.
•
And last but not the least , a pendulum watch is a must in each and every study room.
(4) THE BENEFICIAL VASTU ACCORDING TO THE SUITABLE DIRECTION. - Plot facing EAST is good for scholars, philosophers, priests, professors, teachers etc. - Plot facing NORTH is good for those in Power,Administrators and those who work for government. - Plot facing SOUTH is good for business class and for those who work in business organizations. - Plot facing WEST is for those who provide supporting services to the society. Moreover the buyer should also keep in mind his Zodiac sign(Raashi) in mind selecting the plot or the enterance facing different directions. These are as follows: Cancer Scorpio Pisces Gemini Virgo Capricorn Taurus Libra Aquarius Aries Leo Sagittarius
EAST facing plot
SOUTH facing plot
WEST facing plot
NORTH facing plot
(5) HOW TO DESIGN YOUR OFFICE
our work places , which is the reason that one should always be very careful about the functionality décor of the working space. Our work space , where we spend at least half our walking time , six days a week , is as important a part of our lives as our homes. The working conditions and the environment in the offices directly affect the way people interact with the family and friends at the end of the day. These also have an influence on our productivity , mental well-being and general health. PLANNING THE OFFICE : To plan an office effectively , the designer should have a thorough understanding of the functional and aesthetic requirements of the client , followed by an in-depth evaluation of the possibilities and constraints of the given space , including columns , beams , existing plumbing and so on. An office should ideally have enough space not merely to seat its employees , but to locate ancillary and support services , from the stately boardroom to the humble pantry , as well as for circulation between these areas , with adequate access to stairs and fire escapes. When planning a given space , it is important to conceive a long term master plan , keeping in mind planned growth and future requirements , even if the intention is only to implement part of the plan now and execute the rest as needs and funds arise. The master plan would ensure that what is installed now will not have to be dismantled or relocated when new developments take place. This would help eliminate unnecessary wastage of material and labour . THE RECEPTION AREA : It is the reception area that makes the first impact on the visitor and which colors his expectation of the space ahead. If the business of the company calls for continuous interaction with guests who need to be suitably impressed , then it is important that the reception area be adequately dressed. - The reception can be used to display the company’s product or operations with visuals or models. - Alternatively , paintings or aesthetic accessories in the room can be chosen to reflect the company’s taste and style. - The receptionist should have direct visual access to be able to keep an eye on office comings and goings . CONFERENCE ROOM : Conference room is the central area of any office and can give impressions to anyone new having meeting in that room - Conference should ideally be easily accessible from the entrance , so that the visitors do not have to travel all over the office. - The facility of a nearby toilet will be an advantage for the same reason. - The equipment necessary for presentations , such as a screen , TV , video monitor , black board , flip chart etc , needs to be provided . - The design should provide a calm , neutral background for visual presentation and adequate lighting. The furniture and ambience should be designed so that the participants can communicate with each other CEILINGS : It is well to remember that ceilings , like any other surface , reflect light and sound , and contribute significantly to the lighting and acoustic qualities of a space. - Suspended ceilings are available in different materials , and increasingly , acoustic tiles and panels are becoming standard , especially in open offices and
where no special ceiling treatment is required. Usually made of non-combustible which prevents sound waves being reflected back into the room. - Holes for recessed lights can be cut out wherever required. - Plaster or gypsum board is harder and reflects more sounds then it absorbs . - Exposed structural ceiling are sometimes used to create a hi-tech image , as a stylistic alternative to the typical office interior. LIGHTING : Good lighting is crucial for effective work , besides which , lighting accounts for a considerable part of the energy consumed in an office. Therefore , two basic elements which the designer must keep in mind are the cost and the efficiency of lighting . On the other hand , it is lighting which makes design come alive and it should be exploited accordingly. It can create a warm , inviting and dramatic interior , or result in a cold and monotonous office. - One effective use of the standard bulb is as a wall wash , which tends to imbue the whole space with incandescence and makes the room warm and friendly. - Incandescent downlights , halogens included , can complement fluorescents and can be used to highlight specific objects , such as desks , plants , paintings , objects , etc. - To reduce eye strain and fatigue , high contrasts should be avoided . Use of job oriented , task lights can be practical , if complemented by general lighting . - Suspended or pendant lights can serve a dual function in this regard , and while providing overall illumination , can be lowered to concentrate on a given space. - A system of selective switching and operational control areawise , or where possible even deskwise , can help restrict usage and operating costs of lighting to only as and when required. FLOORING : Office flooring is subjected to more wear and tear than any other surface in the room , and it is therefore imperative that it be hardy and resilient. - Flooring materials vary greatly . hard flooring , such as stone , granite , marble , kota , etc. Wood , cement , terrazzo , ceramic tiles , are usually noisier - Soft coverings such as vinyl or carpeting , but they are hardier. - Choice of flooring material will depend on the function of a given area and its requirements where durability , appearance , cost and maintenance are concerned. - Flooring can be used as a design tool not only in an obvious choice of material and color , but to demarcate departments , private/public areas and circulation paths , by a selective use of different hues and surfaces. STORAGE : While providing enough storage the emphasis today should be on eliminating unnecessary garbage . - The basic storage units such as the cupboards , filing cabinets , drawer unit , open shelf , are still as useful as ever , whether they are free standing or built into walls , or used in lieu of the partitions to save space. - In addition we have certain new innovations such as filing shelves which move on tracks , and which completely fill a given space. - Furniture too can be designed to save space , using the space above and below work tops.. PANTRY: For offices that can afford the space , a clean well designed and pleasant looking cafeteria or canteen will help employees relax.
- Pantries should be designed to incorporate all the essentials , such as a hot plate or gas burner with cylinder space below and a sink , a stainless sink is hardy and easy to clean. - A storage cupboard , shelves or hooks can hold the cups and saucers , plates , cutlery , tea , coffee , sugar , etc. A small compact refrigerator is useful for storing milk , cold drinks , preserving food items , etc. - A good garbage storage system will help circumvent the inevitable mass of tea dregs , papers etc. - Disposable plastic cups , plates , if economically viable can save on maintenance and cleaning. ESSENTIAL SERVICES : coming to the toilets , which perhaps more than any other room , reveals the true class of a company , its attitude to cleanliness and the activity of its employees and visitors. - Bathrooms don’t have to be exotic , but they do have to be adequate in number for the staff employed and they have to be clean. - They should have tiled surface , preferably in light plain shades which are not overpowering and which cannot be scrubbed down easily. - Separate toilets for men and women are statutory to a given number of employees . The traps , the Indian and the western WC with the urinals to accommodate all the users. - If ventilation is less than ideal , an exhaust or ceiling fan may help , for there are few things as off-putting as a smelly toilet. - Facilities for dispensing toilet paper , towel , hand dryer etc , should be provided. Thus , planning the ideal offices large and small , opulent and spartan , the professionals can help make the complicated thing , simple to understand and to work out (6) THE OFFICE : OUR WORK SPACE A few decades ago , offices were treated like machines , catering only to organizational requirements , with little consideration given to the ‘people’ factor which played almost no role in determining the design of the office. Offices are trying to move away from airless , box-like rooms , to better ventilated , well lit , ergonomically sensitive spaces. Increasingly these are being designed by professionals who , apart from seeing that the spaces work with optimum utilization are able to add an aesthetic touch. Nowadays offices are considered to be a status of a person. In India ,previously the offices were either a part of the home or the royal court. The equipment that made these function were no more than the pen , paper and ink. The first sign of automation or mechanization came with the introduction of the typewriter in the nineteenth century. Then the second bit of mechanization came with the telephone and the cyclostyling machines. In the fifties and sixties , offices were rather simply organized. A very strong hierarchical system prevailed and the office was divided between the bosses who had their rooms , the junior managers who had their small personal cabins , and the general staff who sat in the hall. Then the revolution started with the introduction of mainframe computer in seventies and then there was no looking back , these were followed by mini computers , then with the arrival of personal computers in early eighties and the office set-up began to change dramatically.
The strong hierarchical system was no longer relevant , and a new office order , namely the open office , came into being. The open office had light , air and privacy for all. Typically low height partitions were erected between pieces of furniture to give visual privacy but they were not able to provide the acoustic privacy and the noise was the biggest hurdle. The open plan system can accommodate a wide range of functions from reception to conference room. Here ,both executives and staff are placed in an open area divided into individual or shared workstations , defined by independent storage units or partitions of varying heights. The heights of the dividing panels will depend on their function. Low panels upto 4’ , create a feeling of privacy when seated , yet allow one to see or reach over when standing . 5’ high panels offer more visual privacy and though the extra tall can still see over are usually high enough for Indian users. Taller panels can be used to define different departmental areas. Partitions can be useful in concealed old unmatched furniture so that this does not clash with modern additions , which would ruin the aesthetic appeal of the office Then there were so much developments in the designs and now is the trend of modular offices. Designing new offices involves making thousands of decisions . Some of these are easy , others may take more time. Then the difference between a well designed office and a poorly designed one is enormous . get it wrong and you are faced with high overheads , little design flexibility and worst of all – the unhappy staff and in the last the work suffers. Space in the office as always at a premium. The key is to use it as well as you can. By coming up with an adaptable partition system to customize your floor space , and full filling all the furniture needs , the designer can help you maximize the use of the space available. In recent years , India has been waking up to another genre of furniture that has long been popular in the west – well made modular furniture in wood and particle board. So now the question comes , what exactly is the modular furniture ?? Quite simply , furniture that can be broken down into modules and put back together at will. Machine made for the most part , it is devoid of frills . The advantage of this kind of furniture – often referred to in the trade as CKD (Complete Knock Down) are many. - For the largest segment , going modular is the key to better living. - Because it can be dismantled , it is ideal for people who have to move a lot. - It is cost-effective and convenient , and gives one the freedom to play around with color and form. - It being light and simply structured , is ideally suited to the match box sized dimensions of modern day apartments. The atmosphere in the office can greatly influence work output and an increasing emphasis is being placed on making the modern office as pleasant as it is functional. This is not always easy , given the increasingly smaller work spaces to contend with. In such a set-up , going modular is a great idea. Stylish , color coordinated contemporary and both environment friendly and practical modular furniture is here to stay. Most furniture lines come is a range of models, to be selected as per individual requirements and budgets. With multiple work surfaces and storage areas above and below the working levels , space is used very effectively. One can add draw units , cabinets , display panels and pin boards whenever and wherever one needs them. All these systems are easy to install , upgrade or relocate and they adapt well to all modern communication data and computer equipment.
Thus , Image is a subtle component that is affected by several variables , some of which may not be possible to change; like the location itself. Image also conveys an important message to those who work in the office. Design requirements will vary from office to office , according to function , organizational style , budget and of course , the image the company wants to present to the world. A pleasant work environment is the management’s way of showing that it cares about its people. (7) KNOW MORE ABOUT THE COLORS Color is the most powerful decorating element in our homes. Color is memorable and above all personal. An understanding of color can really help us achieve the goal of a pleasant , personal and comfortable home. There are hundreds of options but only one decision maker , that matters and that is You. The people who eat and sleep , entertain , play and rejuvenate in the spaces are the ones whose well-being is affected. If we understand the basics of the color , then we can make a perfect color scheme. The colors are divided into three categories Primary color- These are the three basic hues , red , blue and yellow. They are the foundation of the color wheel and all other colors are derived from them. Secondary color – When two primary colors are mixed , they form a secondary color . They are orange , green and violet. Tertiary color- When two secondary colors are mixed , they form a tertiary color , like citron , olive , russet. THE COLOR WHEEL – The color wheel is a complete picture of all the colors available , once you understand this , there will not be any problem in forming any color scheme. In the color wheel at the right , the primaries form a triangle with equal sides with in the circle , and the secondaries form another triangle opposite to that. Each color has a ‘complement’ which is located directly across from it on the wheel. Thus , green is complement of red , orange is complement of blue. A perfectly balanced color scheme might use equal parts of three colors which are equidistant on the color wheel . Interior designers often compensate for intensity by either tinting (adding white) or toning ( adding black ) or by graying (adding complementary colors ) . In these way they create contrast through a change in value (lightness and darkness ) or intensity ( brightness and dullness ) . With even this limited information , it is easy to see how the possibilities for combining colors are infinite and inviting. Using the tints and tones ,the total effect is lively and pleasing but not overwhelming , a beautifully colored room. Now here are some of the colors with their effects and the nature they depict and the places where they are suggested to use. RED : Red is the most dramatic , emotional and active of the three primaries . It is an especially versatile color in its effects , enlivening interior spaces by creating excitement , warmth and elegance . The use of red suggests a bold and confident attitude. It is used in those areas where one needs excitement like the bars. It is less often used in sleeping area because of its energizing quality. The complement of red is green. BLUE : Blue is the only colors which is the most universally equated with the beauty. Blue is timeless , linking the present with tradition and lasting values. It
is the most versatile in expressive values. Psychologically, blue is associated with tranquility and contentment. In interior design , softer and lighter blues are generally preferred for the larger areas. YELLOW : It is a powerful color , both light in value and extremely intense in its purest form. It evokes a sense of energy and excitement. Yellow is a perennial favourite in interior design , combining with greens to provide the natural freshness and with red for gaiety and richness. GREEN : Green is the most common choice of the designers. It is often used as a dominant room color . Green goes with every other color and makes it a natural neutral. It represents the greenery of the nature and thus provide the room with liveliness. VIOLET : It seems to be a color of emotional contrasts. Its paler tints are unabashedly romantic, fragile and quiet feminine . It enjoyed the popularity in the Victorian era and now as pure colors emerge again , beautiful violet is certain to be a player. ORANGE : It is amazingly versatile , capable of emitting great energy in its purest form and as an earth tone , it evokes warmth , comfort and reassurance. Nowadays , the lighter orange , popularly known as peach is common in use as it gives a cool effect. PASTELS : Pastels are simply lighter tints of any hue , white added to red yields pink and light pink is a pastel. There is not any particular definition for a pastel color but when colors become so light that they almost seem to be white , they are pastels. The pastels are becoming more and more popular as they crate the most sober and elegant look. NEUTRALS : Using neutrals does not mean not using color . Any low intensity color that is used as a background for other accent colors , features , furniture and objects in a space can be classified as neutrals. Neutrals are practical and by changing accessories and fabrics the look of space can be dramatically altered against the same neutral background. Enjoy color , take these tips from the professionals and then you can become creative. You must think about the people in your home who matter the most for you and then imagine the things you do together and then finally go for a final color scheme. (8) CREATING MOOD WITH COLOR Color has a profound effect on our mood. In clothing , interiors , landscape and even natural light , a color can change mood from sad to happy , from confusion to intelligence , from fear to confidence. Particular colors have different effects on each individual . Response to a color may be influenced by a number of factors such as the body’s need for a specific color , a sad or happy memory associated with a color. In previous decades , certain colors or group of colors dominated every palette . Now in millenium , the stopper is out and uniqueness and personal preferences are really in. There are no absolutes in the world of color. Some colors make you want to get out of your chair , others make you want to nestle down and read. Some colors are articulate and must be listened to. Others are very quiet . Some colors indicate that you have travelled or are well read. Yet
others create a desire for closeness , intimacy and love. Following are some of the most typical responses to various color groups. NURTURING NEUTRALS : These colors create a sense of peace and well being. They foster quiet conversation with family and friends and can dispel loneliness. Throughout time , mankind has found a sense of peace and tranquility when in touch with " Mother Earth " . It follows that colors which impart a sense of warmth and serenity come directly from the earth. In addition to the earth colors in the neutral group are colors associated with sea such as sand , shell , coral , pearl , stone , seaweed. GREEN is a color which helps us to adjust to new environments and situations. It will always be found among the ‘nurturing neutrals’. The BLUES represented here will range from winter sky to stream to midnight. The neutrals are somewhat like the furniture while other palettes are more like accents or accessories. INTELLECTUAL COLORS : These are the sharp , witty and unique colors which convey a message that the owner has travelled , is well read and has something to say. These colors will command respect without being overbearing. This palette also starts with a earthy , warm base. Grey is a color which promotes creativity and will often be found in foundation of an intellectual palette. These greys will be warm and gentle. Some tones of blue suggest communication and trust , so it will naturally be found in the intellectual palette. Navy blues will often find their way in this palette , but its effect is warm and never cold and fragile. Red also appears in this intellectual palette , but the shades will be earthy and complicated burgundy , cranburry. PLAYFUL COLORS : These colors are exiting and used for a fun providing environment These playful , whimsical palettes create their own kind of music , like the sounds of children playing. There are highs and lows , lights and darks and always movement and activity. Used in active spaces within the home , a ‘playful’ palette can add energy and vitality. But if overdone , this type of palette becomes irritating and stressful. The foundation of this palette is WHITE . This could be anywhere from vanilla ice cream to snow drift to winter moon. Then comes the bubble gum pink , buttercup , wintergreen , all the berry colors and crayon colors. Many of these colors will be cool , and even in lighter tones there will be brightness and clarity. The bottom line in creating this type of palette is that the colors should suggest a sense of freedom , play and downright fun. HEALING COLORS : This palette includes the colors which are very refreshing and rejuvenating. Like nurturing colors , ‘healing colors’ also begin by getting in touch with nature. The first group of colors considered in this palette is GREEN. Because they have the power to help us adjust to new environments , skillful designers use lots of plants and other forms of green . Healing greens may be warm or cool , but not muddy or mysterious like those in the intellectual palette. Healing palettes also take inspirations from warn earth tones. These palettes usually contains contrast as well as a clarity of color that is inspiring. They will include a range of lights and darks but will never be muddy. ROMANTIC COLORS : Many species including the human beings attempt to attract the opposite sex with colors. RED is the color of sex and lust and is often called the most romantic of colors. It is no accident that red is the chosen symbolic color for the Valentine’s Day. In interior design , however , a less intense , softer tone of red is far more conducive to romance than the pure hue. Often referred as PINKS , these colors vary from cool to warm and from light to
dark. Pinks have an interesting quality that seems to halt the body’s ability to stay angry. PURPLE is another color which is definitively romantic because of its passionate , unpredictable and quixotic characteristics. Paler , less intense tones of ORANGE such as apricot and peach are often included in the romantic palette , suggesting purity and innocence. BLUES in the romantic palette will be cool and inspired by water. PERSONAL STYLE : There are no trends in color as important as personal style. Today , most designers draw from many historical periods as well as contemporary influences and mix them together to create unique personal spaces. The most effective color palettes reflect and enhance the interests , collections and activities of the people who live there as well as architectural features. The effects of color on mood will vary from individual to individual. Color schemes have emotional messages too. An awareness of the emotions generated by different colors is helpful in planning personal palettes that will be pleasant to live with , but it must be understood that this information is not absolute. Subtle changes in tone can increase or decrease the emotions evoked by a particular color , allowing it to be included in many diverse palettes. (9) UNDERSTANDING THE LIGHTING SYSTEM Light can define space , substance and style. Outdoors , with the shifting sun and atmospheric conditions , light and the shadows change the appearance of things natural and man made. But in the indoors , the play of natural and artificial lighting largely determine both function and decoration. Today lighting is considered to be a very important element of decorating scheme. The invention of the incandescent bulb in 1978 revolutionized lighting systems as it allowed light to be easily manipulated. Apart from exploiting natural light by using opaque or transparent glass walls , sky lights , large windows etc. for offices , architect work out the detailed light fittings which are conducive for a work environment . In homes , a careful selection of lights extends and enhances the aesthetics of interiors. Similarly for hotels , showrooms , museums , gardens , water bodies , individual lighting requirements are worked out. Artificial light falling from various angles and heights on different surfaces guide us to perceive various features and dimensions while creating a specific mood. With technological developments and the stress on precision lighting , a variety of lighting fixtures are readily available with options which offer manifold possibilities in terms of effect. The choice of fitting according to the room , gets very difficult , one gets puzzled off as there are so many varieties in lights like the table lamps , spot lights , clamp lights , recessed / surface mounted lights , uplighters , halogens , incandescent bulb , pendants , fluorescent fixtures and lots of others. Once the basic idea of the space , mood , interior design , highlighting , function of work have been specified , one can then consider the basic types of lighting. Initially only the planned positions of lights need to be decided. Later , the selection of bulbs and the exact effect can be created. One should always keep in mind some of the basic rules while designing the light. - Every activity that takes place in the interior must have lights of the right kind , intensity and the right direction.
- The eye prefers even lighting with the minimum of contrast between the brightness of the room surfaces and the lighting fixtures. - The eye works best when the work surface is more brightly lit then the surroundings. - The eye is stimulated by the contrast of tone and sparkle. - When room lighting change , color changes or disappear , thus objects become more or less important in the room. There are three basic types of lighting which are categorized according to the intensity of the light used. General lighting- It supplies an overall illumination in the area. Task lighting – It supplies the required illumination for specific tasks such as reading , painting etc. It directs strong local illumination without high general illumination as required for activities carried in a particular area. Accent lighting- It offers a decorative element to the area by highlighting the particular objects or features in the area. They are auxiliary to the general lighting and provide an added , and at times , dramatic dimensions to the scheme. Spaces can be provided with one , two or all types of these lightings , depending upon the requirement . With different types of lighting in each room and dimmers to adjust the intensity of light , an ordinary space can be infused with much dramatic look to convey different moods to suit different times of the day. (10) MAINTAINING THE LIGHTING SYSTEM The term lighting refers to the useful energy output of a system consisting of light sources , fixtures to support them in appropriate locations , wiring channels to activate the light sources and the convenient electrical controls. Here are the tips on how to maintain the lighting system in different rooms according to the ambience . LIVING ROOM lighting : The living room is the core of domestic life. In the reading room , one should plan the lights very carefully as the intensity affects a lot on the eyes thus on the health. - In a study , the priority is to provide adequate illumination for reading and writing. For maximum pleasure of reading and for easier concentration , reading lamps must have a proper quality and quantity of illumination and be placed so that the light falls comfortably on the open page. - The complete room may be lit with powerful uplighters , downlighters , or the general lighting may be reduced to be supplemented with task lights as required . For the study it is necessary that task lights be supported with general illumination even if it is of low intensity to avoid eye strain. - Care should be taken where computers are placed , the task light should not produce glare or reflections on the screen. Task lights for writing should be positioned so as to avoid both glare and shadow. - If floor lamps are used as reading lights , then it should be 40"-49" from the floor to the bottom edge of the shade.
