Card # 3- Variables in Mechanics Distance: It is the length of the actual path traveled by a body during motion in a given interval of time. It is always positive. It is a scalar quantity. Displacement: The shortest distance between the two positions of the body in a particular direction during that time and is given by the vector drawn from the initial position to its final position. Displacement is independent of the path. It is a vector quantity. The value of displacement can never be greater than the distance traveled. Speed= Distance/ Time Average speed = Total distance covered / Total time taken Average speed = (s1+ s2+s3+……)/ (t1+t2+t3+…….) Velocity = Displacement/Time
Acceleration =Velocity/time Force: Force is an external agent which can change the state of a body. It is a vector quantity. Its S.I. unit is Newton.
Inertia: Inertia is the property of bodies by virtue of which they are unable to change their state of rest or state of motion. To change the state of a body an unbalanced force is needed.
Momentum:
Impulse: When force is applied its total effect is called impulse. The momentum of a body can be changed by two ways, 1) By applying a large force for small period of time. 2) By applying small force for large period of time. Thus change in momentum depends upon magnitude of force and its time period. Impulse = Force × Time interval
