Uniform Resource Locator (URL) A means of locating the resource by describing its primary access mechanism. URL is Unique. Expresses a lot of different information.
Syntax of URL: All URLs share the same basic syntax. protocol:address Example: http://www.google.com/ http: Protocol www: Machine Name google: Sub-Domain com: Domain
URLs with Account Names
To choose a particular account in a particular domain we use account names with URL.
Example: http://www.sicsr.com/~amita/
URL with IP Addresses:
Each computer on the Internet is represented by a series of four numbers separated by a period. It is Unique Many URL can have one IP address. e.g:
http://129.34.139.30/ (www.IBM.com )
Different Protocols in URL
Internet supports a standard set of resources each with its own associated protocols. URLs can point to parts of the Internet other than just the Web. ftp:// File Transfer Protocol http:// Hypertext Transfer Protocol gopher:// Gopher Protocol file:// Local File name mailto: Electronic mail address news: Usenet news group telnet: Interactive Session using the Telnet Protocol
