Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disorder of unknown etiology characterized by inflammation limited to the colonic mucosa and by an intermittent relapsing clinical symptoms like Diarrhea Rectal bleeding Tenesmus Passes of mucous Crampy abdominal pain Loss of appetite Fever Weight loss The peak age of onset of UC is between 15-30 yrs. In early stage of Ulcerative Colitis the mucosa is erythematous and have a fine granular surface but in more severe disease the mucosa is hemorrhagic, edematous and ulcerated. Due to epithelial regeneration pseudo polyps may be present in long standing conditions.

Objective To evaluate the efficacy of Piccha Basti along with Ayurvedic medicine in the treatment of Ulcerative Colitis.

Piccha Basti (Enema) We are using the modified drugs in Piccha Basti as explained below – Decoction (Kwatha) Udumbar – Ficus glomerata. Vata – Ficus bengalensis. Aswatha – Ficus religeosa. Madhuyasthi – Glycyrrhiza glabra. Madanphala – Randia dumetorum. Past (Kalka) – Mocharasa – Gum of Bombax malabaricum. Honey (Madhu) – Oil (Sneha) – Jatyadighrita.

Materials and methods Setting and study population After diagnosis by the standard clinical investigations like sigmoidoscopy, rectal biopsy and barium meal follow through x-ray study, though clinical examination was carried out to assess the status and duration of disease. Apart from above the detailed symptomatic clinical features like pain abdomen, frequency of diarrhea etc. and demographic profile was also recorded and evaluated. Patients attending the O.P.D. of the  Ayurveda and Panchkarma, Jain Hospital, were screened. 20 patients of both sexes, with clinically confirmed Ulcerative colitis were enrolled for the study. Summary and Conclusion The modern allopathic medicine is not having as specific treatment for Ulcerative Colitis. Moreover the present available preparations have limited role with very drastic and dangerous side effects to the other body organs. These drugs further destroys the metabolic physiological and psychological phenomena of the normal life. The assessment of results has been done on some subjective and objective parameters like pain abdomen, tenesmus, appetite, frequency of diarrhea per day, blood passes in stool, mucous present in stool, fever, weight loss, total leukocyte count (TLC), differential count (DLC), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), hemoglobin percentage of blood (Hb%) and occult blood in stool. Summary and Conclusion 1. The present study suggests that the Piccha Basti is highly effective in management of Ulcerative Colitis. 2. In the present study the mean scores of frequency of diarrhea, blood and mucous in stool, pain abdomen, tenesmus, appetite, fever, weight loss etc. are compared to before and after treatment is highly significant. The present study entitled “The Effect of Piccha Basti in Management of Ulcerative Colitis - A Clinical Report” has fulfilled in its aims and objects. This study revealed that the Piccha Basti is highly effective in treating the Ulcerative Colitis.
