Pandeypur, Varanasi-221 002, INDIA Ph. +91-542-3252795 Treatment of Baldness (Alopecia) through application of Leech A non-pharmacological approach Alopecia means loss of hair which may be localized or diffused. Alopecia areata affects about 2% of the patients seen at our OPD. An immunological basis is suspected because of an association with thyroid disease, vitiligo and atopy. Histologically T-lymphocyte cluster like a swarm of bees around affected hair bulbs, having been attracted and made to divide by cytokines from the dermal papilla. 7 patients of Alopecia were selected from OPD of Kayachikitsa, Sir Sunderlal Hospital, Faculty of Ayurveda, IMS, BHU. They were treated with Leech application on affected area at weekly interval for 8 weeks, without any oral medication. The results were assessed on the basis of area of affected patch, hair growth on affected site, itching and redness if present.

Conclusion 1.

The present study suggests that the Raktamokshana by Jalauka is highly effective. 2. In the present study the mean scores of area of patch in cm. compared to before and after treatment is highly significant. 3. No. of hair growth after treatment increased to a great extent. The probable effect of this treatment is as follows – The accumulated localized vitiated blood has been removed/drained by Jalauka avacharana, which further facilitated the normal blood flow by which the growth of hairs and health of scalp has been re-established..
