IICAS European Studies Speaker Series Presents IICAS European Studies Roundtable: “Remaking the Public University in the 21st Century” November 19, 2009 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM Dugout Conference Room RIMAC Annex To register, email [email protected] Refreshments provided. The current international economic crisis, which has thrown into question free market-based economic and state policies, has paradoxically deepened trends in many regions to privatize statefunded universities and reconfigure their mission as a public service and good along the lines of market-oriented models. The roundtable will seek to explore these trends and their fallout in terms of access, curricula, and research in order to reach a transnational perspective on these developments whose roots go back several decades. Presenters: Marcel Henaff, UCSD Literature & Political Science - France Christine Hunefeldt, UCSD History & CILAS - Spain & Latin America Ping-hui Liao, UCSD Literature - East Asia Isaac Martin, UCSD Sociology - California & United States Charles Thorpe, UCSD Sociology - United Kingdom Event information and directions: http://iicas.ucsd.edu/events/speakerseries/europeanstudies.php For event questions, please contact [email protected] or (858) 822-5297. For special arrangements to accommodate a disability, contact IICAS two weeks in advance of the event.

The IICAS European Studies Speaker Series at UC San Diego is sponsored by the Institute for International, Comparative, and Area Studies (IICAS). IICAS promotes interdisciplinary research, discussion and information exchange on international, iicas.ucsd.edu comparative, and cross regional topics.
