Success Stories...

As the beginning of this school year approached, I was quite apprehensive about where our son, Sean, would spend his afternoons while we were at work. I did not want to enroll him in day care because we only needed after school care three days a week, and most day care centers require a five day a week commitment. Through a friend, I found out about the PLAY program and decided to do some research. I went to the Recreation Division on Starr Avenue, and spoke with the people in charge of the after school program. They explained how their program operated and that the teachers in charge were trained to work with school age children. My questions about the PLAY program were thoroughly answered, and my worries were eased. Sean attends the after school program three days a week, and I could not ask for a better place for him to spend his afternoons. It is so convenient because the program is right on his school campus, and it is just a short walk from his classroom. The staff offers the children a friendly, inviting and well-managed environment in which to complete homework and play. All the staff members are young, energetic, friendly, and seem to really enjoy interacting with the children. The program is set up so that the children spend the first hour or so completing homework and then they have a snack and may then go outside to play. It is so nice to know that Sean comes home with his homework completed and also that he has had some time to exercise and play with his friends. Whenever I pick him up at the end of the day, he is happy and I can tell he feels secure and has had a good time. The PLAY program is a wonderful place for our son and we are pleased that such a great program is available in our community. — Inga and Joel Bernard My daughter completed the basketball class recently at THS with coach Mabie and her team (Allie Assali) and had a great experience - thanks for a great program! — Karen Beckwith If you would like to share your success with one of our Recreation Programs in the fall activity guide, call the Recreation Division at 668-5594

Valley Sun Catchers • September 1 — December 31 The Turlock City Arts Commission announces a new exhibition, Valley Sun Catchers, which will be on view at the City Gallery inside Turlock City Hall. The exhibition features works by professional and amateur members of Valley Sun Catchers, a Modesto based En Plein Aire organization, with over 55 members. The club was founded in 2000 for artists living in the Central Valley region. Their goal is to “paint the beauty of our own valley and the surrounding foothills” and they achieve this by working outdoors “in our beautiful local parks and along our many rivers” and by going out in smaller groups to “paint the farmlands in our valley”, according to painter Rhett Owings. Some of the members have had works selected for Turlock’s highly competitive Spring Juried Art Show over the past few years, and many have participated individually in exhibitions in this region and as a group.
