Tr ust wo rt hin ess  Trustworthiness is a human quality and virtue.  The virtue of being worth of trust.  Trustworthiness: enable others to believe in us and to rely on us without reservation or fear.

Qu estio n  Do you consider yourself a trustworthy person?  What are the circumstances that make you loose trust in a person?

Tr ust wo rt hin ess  Trustworthiness is achieved by developing values.  A value or quality is something humans beings consider extremely important and desirable.  The following values or qualities help us develop trustworthiness: honesty, integrity, reliability, and loyalty.

Qu estio n  What value or values do you consider important? Why do you consider them important?

Ho nest y  Honesty is a value that helps us convey the truth as best as we know it.  Honesty help us avoid communication that is misleading or deceiving.

Qu estio n  Why do you think people choose to be dishonest?  What consequences can dishonesty create in a person’s life?

Ho nest y  There are different ways to build honesty, these are:  A. Truthfulness  B. Sincerity  C. Candor

Tr uthfuln ess  Truthfulness is: the obligation to speak what we know is true.  Truthfulness is: the intent (aim) to speak or convey the truth  Example: Half-truths are a way to deceived someone by mixing something true with something that is not true.

Qu estio n  What are some of the most common halftruth teenagers or adults use to get out of trouble?

Sin cerity  Sincerity is the commitment of an individual to be truthful.  Ex: A person makes a habit to avoid statements or actions that are misleading.  People that are not sincere, rely on lying and falsehood in their relationship and interaction with others.

Qu estio n  What is the connection between crime and dishonesty?

Ca ndor  The ability to be straightforward.  What you see is what you get, type of person.  A person that is not afraid to speak the truth or demand the truth.

Qu estio n  Who are the people in your life that you consider to be straight forward?  There are people that tell you what you want to hear and there are others that tell you what you need to hear. Which of these two would you prefer?

Ho nest y  Truthfulness, sincerity and candor require that a person be honest in words and in conduct.  An honest person will not steal, cheat, commit fraud, or trickery, because these actions are dishonest in themselves, are anti-values.  A dishonest person deceives in order to take advantage of others.  Dishonesty is a violation of trust, justice, and truth.

Qu estio n  Have you or anyone you know been taken advantage by a dishonest person?  Would you do something dishonest if offered $50 million dollars?

Integrity  The word integrity comes from the word integer, meaning “wholeness”  A person that has integrity is a person that makes sound decisions from situation to situation.

Integrity  A person of integrity is a person that does not compromise his or her values in order to achieve a purpose or obtain a benefit.  A person of integrity is the same in public or alone. This is called character.  People of integrity are admired and trusted because of their resolve, inner strength and transparency.

Qu estio n  How you ever been tempted to behave in a different way when you are alone?  Do you think is possible to behave the same way in private as we do in public?

Integrity  To develop integrity a person has to develop:  A. Self-knowledge (knowledge of self)  B. Self-Reflection (The ability to reason)  C. Self-Control (The ability to control one’s desires and impulses)

Qu estio n  Who are the people in your life that you know practice what they preach?  What are the characteristics of the people in your life that live a life of integrity?  Do you think you have control over your impulses or do your impulses have control of you?

Th e four e nemie s of in te grity 

Integrity can be destroyed by the following behaviors:

 

A. Self-interest (things we want)

 

B. Selfishness (things we don’t want to share)

 

C. Self-deception (A refusal to accept the truth, playing mind games)

 

D. Self-righteousness (Doing what I think is right instead of doing what is right)

Qu estio n  Why do people often choose to do what they think is right instead of doing what they know is right?

my light, my life, my love, my strength, be with me now, and always: in all my doubts, perplexities and trials, come, Holy Spirit; in hours of loneliness, weariness and grief, come, Holy Spirit; in failure and in loss, in disappointment, come, Holy Spirit; when others fail me, when I fail myself, come, Holy Spirit; when I am ill, unable to work, depressed, come, Holy Spirit; now, and forever, and in all things, come, Holy Spirit.
