Dear TRACETM 3D Plus User: We are pleased to inform you that TRACE 3D Plus v1.25.286 was tested in compliance with ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 140-2014, Standard Method of Test for the Evaluation of Building Energy Analysis Computer Programs. Test results, supplemented by graphs and explanatory notes, accompany this letter. As you may know, ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings, Except LowRise Residential Buildings, stipulates that any computer program that is used to demonstrate code compliance via the performance path’s Energy Cost Budget Method must be tested in accordance with Standard 140. TRACE 3D Plus v1.25.286 has completed the BESTEST validation for calculation and comparison with similar analysis programs as required by ASHRAE Standard 140. Standard 90.1 defines minimum requirements for the design of energy-efficient buildings and is used by many state and local code-writing bodies as the “standard of care” in their jurisdictions. Building-energy simulation programs such as TRACE 3D Plus, are used to estimate the difference in energy costs between the design- and budget-building models specified in Section 11 of Standards 90.1. STANDARD 140 – EXTENDED COMMENTS Action taken to update TRACE 3D Plus simulation engine as a result of Standard 140 testing: 1) When analyzing the Bestest CE100 results, it was discovered that the Coil:Cooling:DX:VariableSpeed object, when used as a child of the UnitarySystem object, was using 7.7% more fan energy when compared against the Coil:Cooling:DX:SingleSpeed as child object. In the UnitarySystem code, the SetOnOffMassFlowRate function missed the switch for fan operating mode (and missed the fact that this code is in IN the cycling fan part of the code) and sets the compressor off mass flow rate equal to the idle flow rate. Once this was corrected, the fan energy associated with the VS and Single Speed models matched. 2) When analyzing the Bestest CE545 results, the VS coil compressor energy was higher by 17.8% while the attached fan was lower by 16.5% compared to the single speed DX model. While the air flow through the fan is the same for each coil model, the fan RTF was different. The reason for this was that VS DX cooling coil did not set the global variable OnOffFanPartLoadFraction so the fan did not know its RTF had increased slightly due to cycling losses. This was corrected and now the data matches between VS and Single Speed DX models.

* ESP-r's finite-difference discretization scheme with respect to time can be fully explicit, fully implicit, or any weighting in between. The program's default 50/50 weighting was employed for the simulations reported here and was found to produce some temperature solution oscillations for particular cases. However, subsequent analysis revealed that these oscillations had no effect upon the predicted fuel and electricity consumptions, the metrics of primary interest in these test cases.
