“The prosecutors received a relayed message in the same manner that I have received. Some of our prosecutors received text messages. Some information were relayed by the people they know,” ani Devanadera.

“It was just said that they (the Ampatuans) shouldn’t be pinned down like when I said ‘that there would be no sacred cows and that there would be no letup’,” dagdag niya.

Humingi si Gavin O’Reilly, pangulo ng World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-Ifra), ng ilang sandali ng katahimikan sa may 2,000 delegado mula sa 87 bansa para sa “more than 30 journalists who were murdered in a vicious attack in the Philippines last week, the deadliest single attack on the media in history.” Tumayo sina Indian President Pratibha

Ayon kay O’Reilly, “an act of savagery that has written one of the blackest pages in the history of the

Region in Muslim Mindanao. Sa bisperas ng ika62 World Newspaper Congress, ika-16 World Editors Forum and Info Services Expo 2009 dito, nanawagan ang WAN-Ifra board sa pamahalaan ng Pilipinas na kagyat na kumilos upang papanagutin ang mga may sala.

HILING NG BEAUTY QUEEN

Ipagmalaki ang Pinas I

hope our countrymen would still be proud of my accomplishment. Being second in a field of 80 beauties is not actually a bad thing,” sinabi ni Sandra Inez Seifert sa INQUIRER LIBRE noong umaga pagkatapos siyang hiranging Miss Air sa 2009 Miss Earth pageant sa Boracay noong isang buwan.

Ngunit may dapat matutunan sa kanila si Borgy, at iwasan ang pagsasabi ng mga pahayag na tulad ng “to those who will not be called and

Let there be 1M trees By Amy R. Remo

THE two powerful storms that devastated Metro Manila and Northern Luzon two months ago prompted a number of companies to rethink their strategies to ensure sustainability in their host areas. GLOBE medical volunteers administer measles shots to a Dumagat child.

Globe reaches out to tribal communities in Quezon GLOBE Bridging Communities (Globe BridgeCom), Globe’s corporate social responsibility program, in partnership with Phi Sigma Gamma Fraternity of University of Santo Tomas College of Medicine, Tribal Center for Development Foundation, Inc. (TCD), Municipal Health Office of General Nakar, and the Prelature of Infanta, conducted a medical mission at Sts. Anne and Joaquin Parish in General Nakar, Quezon. The mission provided medi-

cal attention and medicines to more than 200 families belonging to SAIGIBIN-LN (Samahan ng mga Grupong Agta na Nagtatanggol at Binabaka ang Lupaing Ninuno), an association of tribal communities, duly registered with the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples. Globe’s medical mission is part of Globe’s CSR efforts geared towards putting up sustainable development projects in the various communities that it serves.

And while many have just begun mapping out revisions, the Aboitiz Group of Companies proved to be one step ahead with a self-imposed challenge it had set earlier this year: to plant one million trees. In response to this challenge, the SN Aboitiz Power (SNAP) Group recently held simultaneous tree planting activities in Marikina, Benguet and Ifugao. SNAP chief executive officer Emmanuel V. Rubio called the activity “the start of [the company’s] crusade to help mitigate the devastating effects of climate change.” According to Rubio, the activity was also a “response to the devastation brought about by Tropical Storm ‘Ondoy’ which disrupted lives in Marikina and neighboring towns while

Typhoon ‘Pepeng’ caused landslides and claimed many lives in Benguet, our host province.” “Part of our corporate social responsibility is supporting our host communities, not only in disaster response but equally important, in disaster mitigation,” he stressed. Close to 2,400 seedlings were planted by 200 employees and community volunteers from SNAPBenguet Inc. and SNAP-Magat Inc. who trekked to watershed areas in their host communities for the company-wide event. Some 1,300 seedlings of Narra, Tuai, Mahogany, Bangkok Santol and Anonas were planted in the Magat Dam Watershed Area in Barangay Sto. Domingo, Alfonso Lista, Ifugao, while around 1,000 coffee seedlings were planted in Sitio Binga in Barangay Tinongdan, Itogon, Benguet. Meanwhile, SNAP’s Manilabased employees also joined a 400-strong contingent from different Aboitiz companies on the same day to plant 3,200 seedlings of Molave, Narra, Ka-

magong, Fire Tree, and some fruit trees in the Marikina watershed in Antipolo City. Participating companies included Pilmico, Unionbank, 2Go, AEV, AP Renewables, Aboitiz Transport System, Luzon Hydro and Kerry Logistics. To ensure sustainability, establishment of fire lines and application of fertilizers will be conducted as post planting activities. In October, the Aboitiz Group of Companies set for itself a target to plant one million trees to offset the group’s carbon emissions. Some 700 employees and volunteers planted 20,000 seedlings of indigenous trees in Bojo, Aloguinsan in a tree planting activity held last month in Cebu. SN Aboitiz Power is jointly owned by SN Power of Norway and the Aboitiz Group. SNAPBenguet Inc. is the owner of the 175-MW Ambuklao and Binga hydroelectric power plants (HEPPs) operating in Benguet while SNAP-Magat Inc. owns the 360-MW Magat HEPP.

A cool change in urban ‘green’ living

HP Photosmart Premium abled Photosmart line-up, HP today also bolstered its expansive consumer printing and personal publishing portfolio with three HP Deskjet printers, including HP’s most affordable wireless offering— the HP Deskjet D5560 Printer Series. “Touch technology will play an important role in making the future of printing more intuitive and simple. Incorporating touch into HP’s devices is a big step forward in adapting technology to better fit into people’s lives, so they don’t have to adapt to technology,” said Steve Breidenbach, Ph.D., HP Imaging and Printing Group Experience Design Master.

AS concern for the environment grows, people have been called to action on many levels—in their personal lives, in the workplace and in their social groups. Other changes in living “green,” however, happen behind the scenes of our modern urban environment, in the buildings we work in, study in, shop in or call home. Green building technologies can make a huge difference in the carbon footprint of a condominium, office building, school or mall. Among the most effective of these technologies are air-conditioning systems which are energy-efficient, or which make use of renewable energy. New sustainable air-conditioning solutions created by Dunham-Bush, a pioneer in green cooling, and its partner company SOLID GmbH, were launched in the Philippines today. D.W. Hew, managing director of Dunham Bush and Dr. Christian Holter,

executive director of SOLID GmbH, came to Manila to introduce these technologies. “These solutions have a lot of potential here in the Philippines, since Filipinos are very aware and concerned about the responsibility to prevent climate change and preserve our natural resources,” said William Guido, chairman of D.B. International Sales and Services (DBI), the exclusive Philippine distributor of Dunham-Bush green cooling solutions. Dunham-Bush’s Ice-Cel thermal energy system is being used in buildings such as Greenbelt 5, TriNoMa, Serendra, and 168 Mall. The system creates and stores ice in an insulated tank in the evenings, and then uses the ice for air conditioning during the daytime. Through this process, the Ice-Cel system minimizes a building’s greenhouse gas emissions. The solar thermal energy system takes a different approach by utilizing solar energy as the

power supply of the air-conditioning system. During the hottest part of the day, when most power is consumed for cooling, the solar TES is at its most effective since solar energy is also at its peak. Aside from the benefits to the environment, these solutions are also profitable for developers and building owners, which can realize savings on their monthly electricity bills. “ We a r e p r o u d t o s u p p l y Philippine buildings with these innovative sustainable technologies, which are milestones in bridging the needs of modern urban living with environmental responsibility. In today’s complex, resource-constrained and connected world, if we don’t have a strategy for sustainability, we don’t have a strategy for business,” said Guido.
