ERIAL Number EA0000001. Ito ang bilang ng unang ePassport ng bansa na inisyu ng Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) kay Pangulong Macapagal-Arroyo.

Tinanggap ni Ms Arroyo ang pasaporte sa pagdalo nito sa paglulunsad ng makabagong pasaporte sa pagdiriwang ng ika-111 taon ng pagkakatatag sa kagawaran. Mahigit 60 bansa na ang gumagamit ng ePassport ngayon. Upang ipakita ang kakayahan ng ePassport, pinadaan ito ng Pangulo sa passport reader na agad na naglabas ng kanyang biometric information, digital signature at larawan. “This will have a great impact on our national security because when you talk of ePassport you talk of a passport that is difficult to tamper with,” ani Assistant Foreign Secretary Domingo Lucenario. Taglay ng ePassport ang isang nakakubling imahe, napakanipis na holographic laminate, at isang electronic microchip na hindi magagalaw, ayon kay Lucenario.

Nilalaman ng integrated circuit (IC) chip ang larawan at ilang detalye ng may hawak ng pasaporte upang mabilis na matukoy ang pagkakakilanlan niya. Mababasa ito ng border control officials sa ibang bansa gamit ang isang passport chip reader. “The ePassport will facilitate and hasten the entry formalities in other countries of OFWs, Filipinos residing in other countries and Filipino travelers, as well as further reduce opportunities for passport fraud and tampering,” ani Lucenario. Kahit makabago ang ePassport, P950 lang ang halaga nito, isa sa pinakamurang pasaporte sa mundo. Ngunit maaari pa ring pumili ang mga Pilipinong aplikante sa ePassport o Machine Readable Passport (MRP), na kasalukuyang makukuha sa P500. Hanggang Abril 1, 2010 na lang ang pag-iisyu ng MRP.
