Honestly, the movie itself isn’t impressive. But it’s wellmade and the execution shows that Soriano is a promising director. The movie looks good, but more importantly, at least for me, the movie feels good. Lalabas ka ng sinehan na may positibong disposisyon. Kahit na tanggalin ang mga bible-quotes at ang pastor church scenes, napananatili pa rin naman ng pelikula ang mensahe ng pagpapatawad at second chance (refer to the TV series 7th Heaven, na halos hindi nagku-quote ng Bible passages pero alam mong isa siyang

NE was purely happy, the other had mixed emotions after a season of joy and comfort.

In a year marked by full theatre, San Sebastian Stags mentor Ato Agustin and San Beda Red Cubs’ legendary mentor Ato Badolato shared the stage with their players after steering their respective schools to the NCAA basketball titles. Though immune to nerve-wracking oncourt struggles, Badolato, teary-eyed and soaked with sweat, groped for words as he described the Red Cubs conquest of rival Letran Squires in the deciding Game Three of the junior basketball crown.

Badolato, whose clinical style of coaching netted 16 of the Red Cubs’ 17 junior titles overall, will relinquish his coaching post to become San Beda College’s athletic director next year. The pandemonium was made memorable by the presence of San Beda rector and NCAA president Fr. Mat De Jesus, OSB, and NCAA management committee chairman Jose Mari Lacson who joined loyal San Beda fans in the frenzy. Spitfirish guard Brit Reroma, favored to take over the Red Cubs’ coaching chores, also played for Badolato.

While Badolato basked in the glory of his many conquests, another Ato, this time a Pampangueño, who once sowed terror in the pros as the ‘‘Atom Bomb” was simply delighted to taste his first NCAA title. A rookie coach in the unpredictable world of NCAA bas-

ketball, Ato Agustin found himself at the center of attention after helping the Stags regain their lofty standings in the league. ‘‘This is very sweet. What more can you ask for,” said Agustin as he saw his wards zigzag past threepeater San Beda in the title series. Though lacking in coaching experience, Agustin parlayed his fruitful stint in the pros to mould the Stags into a hardworking and efficient team. Denied a four-peat, San Beda coach Frankie Lim was gracious in defeat. Lim knew the Red Lions lost to the better team. “We have to give credit to San Sebastian. Nobody expected them to win two straight and wipe us out in the finals,” Lim said. Sudan Daniel got lost in the in-yourface defense of SSC’s big men bannered by Gilbert Bulawan, while flamboyant rookie Calvin Abueva, playmaker Pamboy Raymundo, Roland Pascual and Jimbo ‘‘Pistolero” Aquino buried the daggers to the hearts of the Lions in the championships. Agustin offered the victory, the Stags first in seven seasons and

AWESOME SUPPORT ‘‘The support was awesome. When I arrived, the Final Four was in my mind. But we managed to take it one game at a time and achieved a title,” said Agustin, who recruited heavily from talent-rich Pampanga. Despite a rollercoaster ride, Agustin had supreme confidence with his wards to get out of trouble. After catching everyone’s attention with a 15-0 mark which set the league’s benchmark for excellence in the eliminations, the Stags suddenly were

caught in a downward spiral. The Stags Express zoomed to a record 15 straight victories, before getting stopped in its tracks by Letran. Floating like zombies in their succeeding games, the Stags lost for the first time agaist Letran and were even forced San Beda to relinquish the top spot going into the Final Four. ‘‘Those losses defined our character,” recalled Agustin. The Stags went through the wringer before shutting the doors on JRU Heavy Bombers in three games in the Final Four to arrange a showdown with the Lions. Flashing an immovable faith, the Stags powered by Abueva survived the Lions in double overtime, 72-68 in Game

1 before sealing the deal with a 76-61 win in Game 2. Now that he’s on top, Agustin has no plans of ‘‘staying at home.” ‘‘Rest for a while and practice,” said Agustin. Aquino, the Finals MVP, will no longer suit up for the Stags next season which SSC will be hosting but the Atom Bomb isn’t worried at all. Fact is, Agustin’s not lacking in cagers capable of doing an Aquino. ‘‘I am confident that others will step up to fill in Jimbo’s shoes.” Is doing a Badolato a part of his gameplan? ‘‘Coach Ato is a tough act to follow.
